It finally occurred to me that with my constant use of navigation apps to get around town as quickly as possible, I needed something like this for safety purposes. I found this product one evening at a truck stop while traveling and purchased it on a whim. Expectations were low given my general preference for aesthetics over functionality and the fact that my perception of this and similar contraptions are generally cheap, poorly designed, and difficult to install correctly (and keep it installed correctly!). I figured it would drive me crazy, but for the price, it was worth a shot. I could not be more pleased with this product and was compelled to order a second one from Amazon for my wife (who hates stuff like this but loved mine). You would think that a piece like this would be constantly being knocked out of place and requiring adjustment. Not at all. This is very simple to install and whomever designed this thing is extremely smart. It stays in place perfectly even through periodic adjustments of the angle to fit my eye. The design allows you to easily adjust it so your phone can be displayed in portrait or landscape and in any direction -up down left right - that is desired. It is rock solid and never requires re-installation. Fantastic product.

Usage:
I used the Grip-It holder with my 4.5" smartphone and my GPS unit and it holds both very well. At first, I was worried that they might fall out due to the enclosure not be very tight, but those fears were unfounded as the pads in between the grip held them firmly. Furthermore, it uses a back-end screw cap to adjust viewing angle. Basically, you unscrew the cap connecting the holder in the back to adjust the viewing, then screw it back in to keep the viewing angle rigid. Both the method of adjustment and the pads work to ensure your device remains still and safe while driving.

Using the Grip-It, I'm able to use my GPS unit in a nice, low-key place in my car where it's constantly charging when I'm not using it, and is ready available when I want to use it. Previously, if I wanted to do that, I would have to attach it to the window using it's standard window grip, then attach a (rather short) charging cable to it that would get in the way and be a distraction. This method is definitely far better.

Assembly and Attachment:
The Grip-It does require some assembly, but it's very simple. Basically, it comes in two parts -- the actual holder and the vent connector. Just firmly plug the vent connector into the holder itself, spread the springs on the vent connector apart to take out vent sitter (boy, I wish I know the names of these various little parts) from in-between the springs, then pull the springs back to firmly hook the Grip-It into your vents.

If there is any confusion (which there was for me as this was my first universal holder), there is a mini manual which should suffice well.

Overall:
The product works very well, is out of the way of the driver as it should be, and does what it describes. If you need something to hold your mobile device firmly and well, these will fit your requirements nicely.

I was pleasantly surprised at the build quality of this unit. The plastic it is constructed with feels strong and it is not that cheap brittle type that some cheap products are made of which will deteriorate in the sun. The unit just feels solid when I handle it which is a good thing. The adjustable cup holder part of the unit allows adjustments for really wide cup holders. I don't think there will be a car/truck that this thing won't work in with that adjustment.

The part of the unit where your device attaches to is rotatable so you can easily change your device to landscape/wide-screen format if needed. When you rotate it you can feel it "clicking" so it feels like there is some mechanism in it that will prevent it from wearing out over time which again is a good thing. My Samsung Galaxy S Captivate phone in its rubber case easily fits in this unit. The adjustable sides extend really far. You adjust the sides by repeatedly pressing in on that little button in the lower right corner you can see in the pics. Every time you press that button the sides extend out 1 notch. You then press on the sides so that they lock in snug on your device. The part of the unit that you attach your device to actually snaps onto the rest of the unit with the neck. Included in the box is an additional attachment that you can screw onto some other device which will then allow you to snap it onto the unit also. So you could have 2 devices that you can swap out and attach to the unit.

As others have pointed out the unit does not have a long neck on it. So if you are wanting something that is going to extend really high from your cup holder then this is probably not the unit to get. I feel that the unit was well worth the money I spent on it and I don't have any regrets.

Overall impressed in the day that I have had this. Bought one for myself and one for my partner as a gift. I have an iPhone 4 in a CaseMate Carbon Fiber holster sliding case. Was on the hunt for a car mount adapter that did not require me to remove the iPhone from its case in order to use each time. Found it of sorts.

Will say that the "stem" portion seems to be very well-built. The goose-neck is tight and may be hard to position, but I think that is a good thing given other flimsy feeling goose-neck products in the past. The cup size adjustment mechanism works like it should, and fits my 2003 Subaru Baja perfectly with just a few turns.

The cradle for what ever you put in it seems to be well-built. Holding out on a 5-star rating because I felt the ratchet mechanism to old the iP{hone in place could be an issue - IF I tightened it to hold it firmly in place, in as much that it would not slide out easily. So far with the CaseMate case I mentioned - I won't to have the grip as tight as I thought and the iPhone will slide out easily - but with enough of a snug fit. As of right now I bought the Cup-it for the iPhone to being used as a GPS with the MotionX Drive GPS app. I use earbuds when driving for cell phone calls.

Which brings me to my lament - not a killer, hence the 4 stars. In the past I have done traveling that put me in rental cars. Some states prohibit the use of windshield GPS mounts. Never found a portable dashboard GPS that was effective or light in weight. This seemed to be a perfect solution. And it is sort of - only for such a short and strong goose-neck. For my partners Yaris - this should be no problem for their Sirus radio using the fold out cup holders at each end of the dashboard.

But for those of us that will want to use the Cup-it in the floorboard cup holders - one has to take their eyes more briefly off the road for those of us less than optimal viewing situation if you wear eyeglasses. I would so much buy a Cup-it XL that had at least an extra foot of goose-neck for those that want to use floorboard cup holders to give a better viewing angle for on the fly viewing and adjustments of our iTunes music.

Other than that so for my first day out with it, very happy with it. My co-workers were also intrigued by it. They thought it was a review unit that I got. LOL I only wish. And thought it was a new item that we would be carrying. We work in a camera store. So that says a bunch for tech geeks liking such a simple item IMO.

Nice support, keeps my Nexus 6P stable even on the bad roads we have here in Québec, decent build and has survived -25C today. Funny thing is that Best Buy had an Insignia support that looked exactly like this one, but it was 25$ + tax! Very happy after a short time with the Bracketron.

Works very well and is adjustable for any size of phone (good for my wife and me with different phones. You need to be gentle with the expanding mechanism as it can get jammed or broken if you force it too much.
