Editorial Reviews

Brad Elterman captures the glitz, glamour of 70s and 80s pop culture in 'Dog Dance.' (Steve Appleford Los Angeles Times)

In the late 1970s, Brad Elterman was the un-official house photographer pf the Sunset Strip, capturing jaw - and trou- dropping moments of excess. " You could never do that today", he said, pointing to a photo in his book "Dog Dance" of the Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones in sopping-wet skivvies. (Maxwell Williams The New York Times)

This could have been, should have been, a great book. Elterman's archives are more exciting than what we have been given - he needed a photo editor. Given the layout, the binding is wrong - double page photos are lost in the "gutter" of the book. The photo captions are hard to read. Whoever designed the book was trying for cute; what he got was confusion. We all know that design follows function - if the design insinuates itself into experiencing the book, the designer has done a huge disservice to the author/photographer. Where were Brad's words, his memories. C'mon, the guy was on the scene - he has stories. Beyond all of this, the book is too small and too thin and too expensive. Brad Elterman deserved better.

I purchased this book from a local store. After flipping through it a little bit, I walked away but I returned later to buy it. I was intrigued by some of the photographs which I couldn't stop thinking about; they brought back a lot of memories for me.

When I was able to look through the book more thoroughly, I was bothered by some of the same issues as the previous reviewer. It would have helped if it were a larger coffee table sized book, because some of the photos seemed cut off and a lot of the detail and the "message" of the photo was missing. The photos posted here on Amazon actually look better than they did in the book.

I also would also have liked more stories and details behind the taking of the photograhs, the circumstances that led up to that particular point in time that we are seeing, what he was thinking, what type of equipment he was using.

Even though I wasn't completely satisfied with this book, I would like to see another collection of Brad Elterman's work that is a better reflection of his artistry and has more of his personal input.
