Amazon has 3 or 4 listings of BMP71 which they apparently sell direct (Prime) and no middle man marketplace seller involved. Prices fluctuate. Could be the included Brady proprietary Label Mark 5 software packages?
Brady is primarily a product sold and supported by independent distributors. You would need buy your product from a local distributor in order to receive tech support and especially expensive training. Who knows if they could even do that. Most companies are nothing more than a checkout counter of products with little understanding of their products. Even technical ones like this.
I am a REAL user of these machines. I create approximately 50+ labels a day for my small business. The Brady BMP71 is a little hyped for what you get. A few steps better than the absolute worthless and defective Brother PT-9600 Labeling System. I found the quality of the Brady to Brother polyester labels and adhesive to be about the same. I left a verified purchase review of the Brother PT-9600 (negative). As soon as it failed, I spent a month looking for anything to replace it that also could handle an inch plus width/height tape. Someone commented on my Brother review to check out Brady labelers. After going through their confusing website of endless products, this was the one which best matched my needs. It does cost three times more than the Brother PT-9600, so I was expecting three times better features and performance. Not so. I looked at the end product I was getting (labels) and not working on emotions of pretty features.
Infinitely better than Brother's early 90's lcd technology display. What I don't like... Every time you press a key the Brady display double-flickers annoyingly. No reason for this to happen. But that is how Brady chose to make it. I hate it. Also hate the delay it causes. It does accurately show you how your label will preview in real time how your label will look. The display is nice, big, clear. Only two fonts are installed on the machine. Why? How ridiculous. I've tried going through my registered copy of Label Mark 5 that was included, but it seems to be a joke. I understand Photoshop. I do NOT understand Label Mark 5. Horrible software product. Looking for fonts, borders and other features to download might be a specific software or firmware update which I cannot find. No "borders" are installed in this. Why would they leave out installed font and border features? I liked creating edges around my text for a cleaner and more professional look instead of all white background, which gives it that masking tape look. You cannot change the size of the text for each line row you use. If you create a few rows of text and discover you made a mistake, there is NO DELETE button! Only a Back Space button. You will find you have to delete an entire row and retype it. When two rows are created, this thing doesn't like to allow a merge of them like you can with your pc keyboard. I might have to make an Amazon video to show everyone how dumb this is.
It is a rubber QWERTY keyboard with a separate numerical key section. Beautiful. Perfect layout. I really liked that. Soft keys. I do worry about dirty fingers permanently erasing and staining the button letter prints. You need to have clean hands every time. You might not have that issue, but I deal with equipment that isn't 100% clean, even though I clean them prior to labeling. Once on, stains never comes off.
WORTHLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck on getting two hours of just stand-by time! This is not portable to remote areas or job sites. I thought about buying a spare battery but good luck on finding batteries anywhere online. I only get about 40 printouts before the battery dies. Brady needs to take a lesson from cordless tool manufacturers on battery life. What a joke.
Permanent Polyester Labels
Very expensive. You would assume Brady would do what inkjet manufacturers do. Sell the machine at cost and make money on the ink cartridges. Not so. These end up being expensive. No private or third party OEM manufacturers anywhere. The quality of the labels seems to be identical to Brother. Although I do see a few defects in the tapes. Spots. Not very good quality control. Adhesive is about the same. Haven't been able to see how it handles the -30 extreme cold where some of my equipment is stored during winter. These polyester labels do use a circuit on the plastic spool exactly like inkjet cartridges. I can't speak for any of the other industry and application specific labels. I will have to buy the tiny circuit board labelers soon.
In all honesty, this thing "performs" about the same as the Brother PT-9600. Three times the price for the unit itself is high. This market is basically a monopoly. No innovation, no high quality, no user friendly product lines. Stale old companies with a lock on our needs. This product is probably 8-10 years behind on where it should be today. It's definitely antiquated.
