Customers are mixed about the quality of the wireless accessory. It doesn't seem like too much to ask, does it -- for something to just work?
Sadly, my foray into the world of completely wire-free has been anything but simple.
To summarize, the Bragi Dash Pro's just work!
* Ability to easily pair with, connect to, and disconnect from my iPhone, iPad and Android phone: ✓
* Ability to move around and not lose connection (with device or between the left and right earphone. ✓
* Comfort and fit (included ear tip wasn't bad, but I'm using them with Comply foam tips and they are even better). ✓
* Audio quality (I know this is subjective, but I am pleased with how they sound). ✓
* Microphone. Clear -- the other party could hear me clearly the entire time. I did a test recording, though, and they were just okay. ✓
* Controls work reliably. ✓
* Audio in sync with video. ✓
* Ability to easily upgrade firmware. ✓
This is just the initial review, as I just got the Bragi Dash Pro, so I have not had a chance to try all of the features, but they get the basics right -- something, again, other earphones have gotten wrong.
More details --
Packaging:
The Dash Pro's arrived nicely packaged. The contents are well organized: the earphones ship in the case, which is in the middle. The tips (which I didn't use, but I did open up to store the tips that came installed on the earphones) are in the top compartment. The bottom compartment held a short USB cable which I will actually use.
A note on the USB connection -- Bragi opted for a Micro USB connection. I would love to see them embrace USB-C in a future iteration of the case. That's what we are seeing on more and more computers. But in the mean time, the Micro USB works just fine.
Construction:
The case is a nice, solid hunk of metal with a brushed finished. It is much larger than, for example, what Apple uses for their AirPods, which should result in a longer lasting battery. I'm not going to try it (and neither should you), but you could probably run the case over with your car, and the Dash Pro's would likely be just fine!
The Dash Pro's appear to also be solidly constructed, and they sit securely in my ears. I've tried moving my head around, and they won't fall out. By the way, they are super comfortable even after hours of use.
Upgrading firmware:
When I first launched the Bragi app on my iPhone, it notified me that a firmware was available. So went to the provided URL, and put the Dash Pro's back in the case and connected it to my Mac to start the firmware upgrade. What can I say? It just worked! The directions on the website were also very clear and easy to follow.
I also noticed that the filesystems on the left and right earphones mounted. This is where I can transfer audio onto the Bragi's, and also where I can get at logs if needed.
Battery Life:
I haven't timed the battery, but will do so and follow up here. But after pairing the Dash Pro's with 3 devices, listening to music for probably 3 hours on and off, and spending probably 20 minutes on the phone, the battery is currently at 40% on the initial full charge.
The price tag isn't insignificant -- the Bragi Dash Pro's are up there in price with the Beoplay e8's. But they are better in all of the aforementioned respects than the e8's.
A little background about my in-ear monitor use --
* My wired earphones are the Audio Technica ATH-IM02's coupled with Comply foam tips. Before that, I used a few pairs of Etymotic hf3's, and found the Audio Technica's after growing tired of cable tears. I got a microphone cable, so they worked nice for phone calls also. They're great, but I hardly touch them anymore, not wanting to hassle with cables.
* My wireless earphones prior to the Bragi Dash Pro were (still have them) the BeatsX, also coupled with Comply foam tips. I found the sound acceptable; the Comply foam tips make them super comfortable; they worked well for phone calls; but the battery life isn't great, and I wanted something completely wireless. I have to say that one thing that I liked about the BeatsX (I think the W1 chip makes this possible) is that I didn't have to explicitly disconnect from one device in order to connect to another. But the Dash Pro's make disconnecting easy enough (press and hold on the right earpiece).
* My workout earphones were the JLab Epic bluetooth 4.0 earphones, also coupled with Comply foam tips. They were comfortable, sounded great, but the microphone wasn't great (not that I took a lot of calls when I worked out). They worked fine if I had them sitting next to me, or even if I walked across the gym to get water; but they would sometimes cut out when I was walking if I had my phone on my person.
I am super pleased with the Dash Pro's!
I can find new homes for the JLab's and BeatsX. I will still keep the Audio Technica's for when I'm mixing audio.
Thanks for doing an outstanding job with the Dash Pro's, Bragi!
By the way, after using the Dash Pro, I would consider the Dash Pro Tailored. If I had not experienced how great the Dash Pro's are, I would hesitate spending the money on custom IEM's from a brand that I didn't know anything about before I tried the Dash Pro's. I would still like to see the Dash Pro Tailored priced at quite a bit less than double the price of the Dash Pro -- a $300 premium for custom's seems a little much. To contrast, Jerry Harvey prices their universal IEM's $145 - $200 less than their custom equivalents. Yes, different product class, but you see my point.
I will share more as I use the Dash Pro from Bragi.
1. Set up the app took me about an hour since the device did not connect with the phone. The are two things you need to set up the audio and the app. The audio is not a problem if you are thinking about setting up just the right headphone because the left does not reliable connection it goes on and off for no apparent reason and it reconnects in my case once a day for no more than 2 minutes then is just silent.
2. The audio Bluetooth connection died for no reason several times while I was doing a 5k run. I had to stop to reconnect it several times because it does not reconnect automatically as they claim. and I am talking about the right one because the left one did not work.
3. the controls seem pretty cool in the videos and when they work they are pretty cool but with a device that dies every 5 minutes there are no functional controls.
4. I am use to the bose sound and for double the price I was section at least the same quality....the sound is terrible it sounds like and old radio mixed with the environment noise. The have the windshield and the noise cancelling option...I don see it work. I could happened that they send me the only broken device and I certainly hope so but so far the experience with this device is the worse I have ever had in my life with headphones. Not been able to even enjoy a 5k run because the headphones don't work.....seriously?
5. the app is suppose to have a different bluetood connection so you can track the exercise and use some extra features, it is impossible to connect the dash to the app.
6. no costumer support... I have sent several emails and I have try to chat with them from the webside but no answer to the emails and I cant find the chat tab anymore.
In general the big problem is that the connectivity is terrible and the sound is even worse.
Top reviews from other countries
However they have apparently upgraded the Bluetooth module and now they work perfectly. I can use them for running without having to hold the phone awkwardly close to my chest.
A bit expensive but considering the competition at the moment they can ask what they want. Give it a few years and hopefully the competition will catch up and process will go down.
