Wireless Smart Earphones
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
I was inspired by a conversation with my sister, who died from multiple sclerosis in 2013. She was diagnosed when she was 20, and her condition quickly worsened. She was soon in a wheelchair. Even though she felt utterly terrible, she was a happy person. I asked her why, and she said, “I know that, every day I live, the next day is going to be worse than today, so today is officially the best day of my life. And you know what Nikolaj? It is the same for you. But your perspective is slightly longer than mine.” Since then, I have been thinking about how to help everyone get the best out of that single day. My answer to this was to create a human technological interface that would be acting as an intimate personal assistant. This interface would give you the information you need when you need it, just like a kind, helpful human being. Our challenge was to avoid creating a serial interface that makes you block out everything else in the world. If you want to help people while they are doing something, you have to have a discreet interface that doesn’t take their attention away from what they are doing. Hearing, as opposed to sight is a parallel interface; a person hears everything at the same time. Because of this, I chose the ear over the eye as the sensory interface center point. It is here that a discreet personal assistant can unobtrusively help you and make you better through your sensory audio perception. This is my intention for The Dash.
What makes your product special?
The Dash is the world’s first truly wireless smart earphones. They give the wearer total freedom of movement and a whole new listening experience. Bragi has developed a unique OS running on the The Dash, making them essentially an expandable platform for future applications. The Dash are waterproof to one meter, so you can go swimming with them. They have gesture and touch controls to interface with the built in 4GB* music player as well as the on-board activity tracker featuring real time vocal assistant feedback. *3.5 GB available for usage.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
From day one, we received amazing support from the thousands of people who believe as much as we do in the ideas behind Bragi and The Dash. This gave us the power to move forward, even in challenging times. Now, we have created a device that enables people to do better. The Dash is a hearable device unlike any other. Bringing The Dash to life and having the opportunity to share it with the world is an incredibly intense and beautiful experience.

I haven't used the fitness tracking features. Being fully waterproof is awesome, and has come in handy. But the Bluetooth connectivity is unbearable. The phone's Bluetooth signal is received by the right-side earbud. Unlesse my phone sitting in my right shirt pocket or in my right hand, the audio breaks up constantly. It makes me absolutely crazy - just completely ruins the experience. Left pants pocket? Heck no. Back right pocket? No. Front right pocket? Not without some interruption. Left shirt or coat pocket? Nope.
I bought these to solve for two primary situations: (1) being at the gym and not wanting a cord that flies around or gets sweaty or drags against my clothes while I'm exercising, which slowly pulls the buds out of my ears and distracts me from focusing on my workout; and (2) mowing the lawn and not wanting a cord that flies around or drags against my clothes which slowly pulls the buds out of my ears or (this is the worst) when I bend over to remove some sticks from my mower's path and then as I'm coming back up the cord gets caught on the mower handle and forcibly rips the buds out of my ears, causing a moment of intense eardrum pain. The wireless Bragi Dash promised to solve for both the gym and lawn-mowing scenarios.
Except when it doesn't. Because of the Bluetooth connection issues, at the gym I find that I can't have my phone in my pocket. The audio just breaks up too much and it's massively distracting. Depending on what exercise I'm doing, I can sometimes put my phone in front of me on a bench or on the ground without disrupting the audio; but then again, if my arm or shoulder breaks line of sight, my audio breaks up. Same with mowing; even having it in my right front pocket isn't reliable enough when I'm moving my legs, the audio breaks up constantly. I have even resorted to putting my phone underneath a baseball cap while mowing - which works, but I mean.. come on.
Right when these arrived, a firmware update also arrived which (based on some forums I was reading) seemed to improve the Bluetooth problems slightly. I updated the firmware before my first use. I can't imagine the connectivity being worse but apparently it has improved. I can only hope more firmware updates resolve the issues soon. It's a shame to have spent this amount of money on something that doesn't actually solve my specific use cases and actually leads me to turn off my audio out of frustration just as often as it works properly.
Now, on to the problems...the company is small and it’s painfully obvious that they can’t keep up with their customer support. As mentioned, I had massive communication delays in getting my original pair replaced...maybe there was a big time difference between east coast US and where they’re located in Europe, I don’t know for sure, but when you get a new product and you have to get support via multiple day emails, it just feels very slow and unprofessional, not to mention massively frustrating.
When my wife asked for wireless headphones for Xmas this year, I thought immediately of the white Bragi Dash. I purchased these on Amazon, and the first pair was DOA. The right earbud never worked and didn’t sync with the left earbud, so they just wouldn’t connect, despite another multi-day troubleshooting process with what is apparently still a very small customer service effort. So I returned that pair to Amazon and decided, foolishy I guess, to buy a replacement on Amazon. (I guess the saying “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me” is very applicable here.) The new pair syncs left and right, and even connects with my bluetooth music source. Great, right? Not so fast...neither is touch responsive in order to change the volume (right earbud), activate touch lock (requires tapping both left and right earbuds at the same time), or other activities where touch is needed. I reached out to their customer service this morning...probably about 10 hours ago...and still no response. I get that they can be swamped given demand for their product (or maybe because of poor quality control), but then invest in more customer service. In this day and age, it’s just not acceptable to be unresponsive to one’s customers. It will hurt them, and in my case, they lost a customer. I will return this pair to Amazon and buy, ugh, Apple’s wireless earbuds. At least I know Apple will stand by their product, and that the product’s QC is much better and will work when I want to use it.
They fit perfect, the sound is fantastic, the touch controls needed some time to get use to and battery life could be slightly better.. If they didn't have that strange cracking problem, they'd be the best product on the market. I hate that I couldn't enjoy them for very long.
1. This product looses connectivity all the time
2. Bragi's updates dont help
3. When asking for a refund, or a replacement, they wouldnt give it to me because of "issues"
