There are two different ensembles on this recording. Both play beautifully. The Brahms is an absolute favorite of mine, and this recording is very well done. The Dvorak is too, but is a substantially slower, somewhat schmaltzier, Old World (?) performance of the American quartet than I have ever heard before. Not inferior, mind you, just unexpectedly different. Give it a try.

The Brahms Clarinet Quintet is sheer autumnal glory. If there was such a place as chamber music heaven I would say it belonged there. It brims with rich sentiment and marvelous songfulness though there are also moments of sober reflection on life's vicissitudes. Its mood is set immediately in the first movement by the tonally attractive expressiveness of clarinetist Jozsef Balogh, though there is, as well, some very nice playing from the other fine musicians in his group. Execution of the Clarinet Trio is also quite noteworthy despite the somewhat difficult time I have warmly embracing what I feel is that work's less inspiring nature.

As good as the performance is by this group of the wonderful Clarinet Quintet, it meets with some pretty stiff competition from Gervase de Peyer with the Melos Ensemble on EMI, and the exceptional Karl Leister with the Leipzig String Quartet on the MD&G label. Both groups offer playing that is wonderfully sensitive, beautifully nuanced and superbly musical. The de Peyer disc also contains the highly engaging Mozart Clarinet Quintet, while Leister's is coupled with Brahms' String Quartet opus 51,no.2. Either, I feel, provides immense satisfaction. These two versions of the Quintet are my top choices.

These two wonderful selections were composed in Brahms' last years, when his music became more gentle. The sound of the clarinet lends itself well to the feeling of autumnal beauty in these melodies. Both the trio and the quintet are performed with exquisite flawless sensitivity that radiates both intelligence and warmth. I had the same impression as the previous reviewer, that the quintet was more enjoyable to listen to than the trio in this CD. However, both selections are so beautifully played that I still rate this CD with five stars. In fact, it may simply be that the quintet sounds a little better because there are five instruments playing together instead of three, which naturally would contribute to creating a more full, rich sound. Besides which, the Andantino grazioso movement on track 3 of the trio is 4 minutes and 20 seconds of absolute heaven. A friend of Brahms, the musicologist Eusebius Mandyczewski, once said that in this work, the cello and clarinet sound as if they are in love. I thoroughly agree with the preceding review that says these two pieces belong in chamber music heaven. There is definitely something heavenly about this CD, which I have already listened to several times with great pleasure since first playing it a few days ago. The sound is absolutely clear and of the highest quality. The CD booklet is well-written, detailed, and informative, with two different essays and information about the musicians. The first, longer essay is written in English and a different, second essay is in German. Naxos has once again provided very high quality music for a very low price. Very highly recommended.
