First of all, this isn't a sports psychology book, its a book presenting his training ideas and program.

His explanations for 'why' are different (and maybe even correct), and I thought the book worth reading just that. As for the actual training methods, he ends up at pretty much the same place as everyone else the last few years - short intervals, long intervals, endurance rides, intervals in all phases, and this is why I think it is only OK. I had really hoped for more on how to 'train your brain', but mostly what he is proposing is do pace (or power) based intervals that progressively approach race conditions - not exactly a new concept anymore.

There are also some inconsistencies in his ideas and arguments. For instance he says the best runners are probably doing things right regardless of what science seems to indicate and we should copy them, but then he supports weights and other cross training. I don't think most of the best runners actually do anything but run. Honestly though, I don't think the inconsistencies are a big problem - he is being practical and supporting the methods he thinks work.

In the end I was glad I bought and read this book, but don't expect it to yield a training revolution for you unless you are pretty new to training techniques. You'll probably end up doing about the same things as before, just thinking about them a little differently.

Decent book. In my opinion the author spends too much time telling you how great he is rather than providing advice on how to improve your running or "brain training".

Fitzgerald's new book is not as good as the "Cutting Edge Runner." The book looks thick, but there isn't as much substance to it as you would think. This is because half the book consists of training plans. Fitzgerald does back up a lot of what he says with scientific research, but there are still some conclusions he draws that experienced distance runners reading the book will disagree with. This is especially the case with his chapter on hydration. Nevertheless, Fitzgerald does an excellent job of incorporating new ideas on training into his book. There is probably nobody better than him at keeping runners updated on the latest advances in training research and methods. While the book may not be as good as "The Cutting Edge Runner" it is well worth reading for any runner of any level.

As with other books of Matt Fitzgerald, Brain Training for Runners is very complete. It comes with extensive training packages, for beginner, intermediate and advanced, for 5 kilometre to the full marathon. What bothers me is that a lot of the philosophies that Fitzgerald is putting forward here, he is contradicting in his book on 80/20 Running. I guess his training programmes work, as long as you stick to them. So my advice is: pick one book and after that, refuse to read his other books.

long winded. I like the science behind it.

Decent information on how brain training works. Great illustrations for the exercises. Boring writing style. Its a struggle to focus on this book for more than 5 minutes without feeling sleepy.
