Given the brain fog and other issues, I decided to try both the Keto Cocktail and the Anti-Excitatory Cocktail. It's a fairly expensive pile of pills, so I started off with once a day. Not seeing much affect, I decided to start the second dose at dinner time. About a week and a half later, I suddenly noticed that I hadn't had a hot flash in days! It has remained that way ever since, for about 3 weeks now.
Between my new keto lifestyle (56 lb weight loss so far with about 15 - 20 lbs to go), increased activity (resistance work, walking, hiking, dancing, etc), the supplements and the freedom of symptom-less menopause, I feel the best I ever have.
Keto, or a low carb lifestyle means health without sacrifice. I get to eat lots of great, health food, and thanks to some terrific food bloggers, still enjoy many desserts made with things like almond and coconut flour, oils, fats, butters, and chocolate. I never feel deprived and don't crave all those carbs from my former life. As I told my daughter, I feel like I'm living in someone else's body because the changes happened so fast.
I didn't have specific issues like diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol to deal with, but all of my numbers have done nothing but improve. My resting heart rate is in the elite athlete range (about 50). I can hike uphill for hours without hitting my max target heart rate zone. Blood pressure was normal and stayed the same, but total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, and TSH went down, while HDL went up. I've been testing at 6 month intervals and have had improvements each time so far. It makes me ecstatic that I'm heading off those components of metabolic syndrome, as well as looking and feeling so great (went from a size 20 to a 12, so far).
In case someone is interested, I try to stick to a 70% fat - 25% protein - 5% net carb ratio. I can also say that "calories in/calories out" is a myth. I thought that by also having a calorie deficit that I would be able to lose weight faster, or end a plateau, but that hasn't proven true.
Now my goals are to lose the last 15 - 20 lbs (weight loss rate has slowed down significantly) and fix my sleep issues. I have discovered that if I stop eating at least 4 hours before bedtime, I sleep much better. It also allows your metabolism to do it's thing while you're sleeping. I have to add that even though I don't get much quality sleep, I'm still pretty alert, no sleep deprivation brain fog or tiredness. That may be from the supplements as well.
I recently took a life expectancy test, just for fun. It came out as 96.4 years. I am currently 51 and feel like I'm on the path to make those 40+ years healthy and active ones.
Most readers may think I am some kind of fanatic. Well, maybe I am. But I believe that a calorie restricted, nutrient rich diet, leads to better health for the brain and all the other organs of the body. I also believe that calorie restriction is easy when the food served is simple and not made artificially enticing.
Maybe Dr McCleary believes that most people simply will not be willing to eliminate these expensive and enticing kinds of foods. I do admit that almost everyone probably feels this way, and would greatly benefit just by doing exactly as he has written. For this reason I must bow to his judgment.
I definitely agree with Dr. McCleary's recommendations for dietary supplements and mental exercises. What I'm really saying is that I plan to do as he says except that my diet is a bit more restrictive - simply steamed vegetables, whole grains, skim milk, more fish, less whole eggs, a little skinless chicken, and almost no red meat. And no candy. Candy kills more people than cigarettes.
I'm a 70 year old 5'10" male weighing in at 150lbs. My goals are to reduce my weight to what it was at age 25(140lbs.), and to improve my cognitive functions as much as possible. This book is sure to help. I highly recommend it to others.
I found Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper a much better read. Like all this research you need to keep an open mind on it
