Editorial Reviews

Beliefs and thoughts control our behavior. These are imbued by our experiences and environment. Too often individuals move to the path of least resistance; we make choices that are most comfortable or familiar to us. Either we don t value the expected outcome enough or we believe that outcome is unachievable. Breaking this cycle can be difficult. BrainShift lays out a simple seven-step process that can have transformational results. The process seamlessly blends behavior change models (awareness, acceptance, intention to change, new behavior), the determinants of health (social support networks, social environments), strategic planning (goals, objective and actions), and motivational theories (reaching self-actualization). Dr. Wilson s inspirational writing has us accept the challenge that a new process to achieve the desired result can have the beneficial impact we all strive to achieve. ----Andrew Papadopoulos, MBA, CPHI(C), Associate Professor of Public Health, University of Guelph

With BrainShift, Jeff Wilson has identified and explicated a fundamental route to positive behavior change. His treatment of the role of beliefs is textured, accessible, and deserving of a wide audience. I was impressed with the lucidity in explaining complex processes. You are a very good writer, often due to your deft use of analogy and metaphor. I thought your strategies for implementing the information effectively was successful by specifying action steps necessary to employ your model optimally. The periodic, interim summaries and tables that organized earlier material in concise, usable chunks was very effective. In fact, I thought the set of reasons for why the belief model can be powerful was a compelling list that could even be given its own elaborated segment of the book. Congratulations on an innovative and textured model of beliefs and their role in determining human choice and action. I wish you great success with it. ----Robert Cialdini, bestselling author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion

The great humanist psychologist Abraham Maslow studied and wrote about self-actualized individuals, those people whose lives were the embodiment of the highest levels of human potential. In BrainShift, Dr. Jeff Wilson integrates many of the greatest discoveries about the power of the human mind and presents an extremely well written book on how to apply these creative principles in concrete, practical ways that work. He describes how each of us can use these principles to make the changes in our lives that not only enable us to live to our full potential, but to do so in a manner that benefits everyone else whose lives we touch. Specifically, BrainShift describes how each of us can learn to understand how our thoughts and beliefs control our behavior and consequently, determine the course of our lives. It also shows us how to change our beliefs and thought patterns to make the changes in our lives so we can experience the self-actualization that Abraham Maslow wrote about. This is a book about cause and effect. It is a book on how to understand and make use of the most powerful force in the universe for change, the human mind. BrainShift teaches us how to use our minds to achieve our highest potential, not only for our own benefit, but also for the benefit of everyone else on the planet. The best description I can think of to describe this wonderful piece of writing is simply to say that I see it as a guidebook on self-actualization. It is a manual on how to grow to our full potential and at the same time, it teaches to optimize our own growth by joining with others to help them grow to their full potential along with us.As a psychotherapist who works with people who are struggling and are seeking ways to live more meaningful, fulfilling lives, I see this book as a tremendous resource. ----Ed Murray PhD, Adlerian psychologist and psychotherapist
