When dealing with sadness & depression, the absolute LAST thing you want to do is read or work your way thru a 500 page, complicated psycho-babble tome. While the book is 300 pages, but it is very readable and approximately half the book is exercises that you can pick and choose to apply to your circumstance. This book is simple, yet elegant in it's approach to "helping you help yourself" out of despair. As a healthcare worker, I found it very informative on how the brain works to produce sad feelings & depression and found it very helpful. And best of all, quick easy exercises to help you "short circuit" this process & get out of it more quickly. Thinking and ruminating about what makes you sad/depressed does not work; it is not a puzzle/problem so that a solution comes to you the more you think about it. Ruminating & thinking endlessly about it only perpetuates the problem/depression. The exercises are concrete; quick, actionable techniques you can actually do to help you feel better as opposed to the vague "don't worry, be happy" advice offered by people who don't get it. The fact that the author also had dealt w/depression herself (as well as some of her family members) and developed this technique to help herself, validated this method for me. I also appreciated that I could start out by reading the parts that interested me, and then try some of the exercises. When you feel better, it's easier to read it cover to cover. Best book on this problem with a different and effective treatment approach.

I am a life-long sufferer of chronic depression. After all those years of doctors, therapists, and scores of different anti-depressants, I stumbled across this book. I bought a used copy on Amazon.com and began to read. For the first time in my life I began to understand (1) My "depression," and how my own thoughts cause it. (2) How to "Brain-Switch" to stop it. It was not an easy read for me, hard to digest, hard to concentrate, and hard to accept. As I began to understand how my brain operates, it made so much sense - and my first, feeble attempts to direct my thoughts WORKED! Not to be too dramatic, but I began to have something I thought I had lost: HOPE. It has only been a few weeks, but I can swear to you that since first day, I have not had a 'bout' of depression. When those thoughts enter my mind, I now begin one or more of the simple exercises explained in the book. AND THEY WORK. I have a way to go, but I make progress every day - and it's not a chore, because it helps. It works. I was always angry when people would say 'cheer up' or 'snap out of it' because I did not know how. This book explains how, step-by-step, simple exercises for your brain, and they work.

I had suffered with depression and social anxeity for 15 years before I stumbled across Curtiss' book "Depression Is A Choice" in the local library one day. That book helped me tremendously. This book goes a step farther and gives methods you can practice everyday to train yourself to stop thinking negatively and start living in the present.
The book is essentially divided into two parts. The first half or so discusses what depression is, how it works, etc. The second half (chapters 16-23), gives you a variety of exercises to use. Here is a breakdown of the exercises:
Brainswitching exercises - these are exercises to get your mind off the negative thoughts. When you are feeling really depressed or anxious and can't stop thinking about how depressed/anxious you are, these are the exercises you want to go to first.
Directed Thinking exercises - these exercises are used to developed new, positive thought patterns. As Curtiss says, these exercises "provide a new fork in the road that you can take instead of the path that leads to depression".
Magical-Thinking exercises - these exercises kind of trick your mind into believing what you tell it. There is a old saying "fake it until you make it". That is kind of the idea here. For instance, when you are feeling bad, tell yourself you are feeling good until you do feel good.
Self-Awareness exercises - the exercises here help you get in touch with yourself and teach you what it means to live in the present.
Anti-Stress exercises - pretty self-explanatory.
Re-Engagement exercises - these help you focus outwardly instead of dwelling on your own feelings
Self-Improvement exercises - again, pretty self-explanatory
Exercises for insomnia - exercises for when you can't sleep
While most of these strategies are nothing new, this book provides a nice compilation of effective strategies. I think almost anyone with depression or anxiety would benefit from the advice contained here. Not all of the strategies will work for everyone, but practically anyone can find at least some exercises that will be useful to them.

There was entirely too much repetition in this book. Was that because it is written to the person lost in emotions who has a hard time concentrating? The principle is true: that one can change one's emotions by switching to the thinking part of the brain. One can choose what to think about even if one feels that one can't. In the beginning of changing one's emotions, it takes consistent effort and sustained practice especially if one has had life experiences that cause deep emotional pain. Faith in a loving God who cares about each individual can be the lifeline that pulls us from the depths of emotional suffering but we have to make the effort to activate our thought control. Some of A.B. Curtiss' exercises can be helpful in making the switch from feeling to thinking and restore equilibrium.
