It was good while it lasted. After many hundreds of hours and traveling across the country and being shoved in my bag and dropped countless times, the left ear bud crapped out and now only produces about 20% of the sound as the right side. Of course all things fail, so it was a decent run of about 8 months of everyday use. I may consider buying another S5 if the price is right.
Back to my Audio Eterna's.
Although, I just so happened to have my Brainwavz M2 in my desk, and they are sounding pretty good for being about 3 years old. YMMV with the S5, and I'm not one to hold back when things go wrong.
As promised this is an update to this review now that I have burned the S5 for way more than 150 hours (closer to 500 hours) and have been using them daily since 7/14. Started listening to Prince's latest two album release Plectruelectrum and Art Offical Age, the funk-acoustic/electro-modern sound from these albums definitely emphasize what is special about the S5.
As a comparison, I put on my Westone 3 and Audio Eterna v2 IEM's which I haven't used in all that time, and it was like night and day how I have grown accustomed to the S5 sound curve.
I can conclusively agree, the S5 is now my favorite of all time.
Build wise they have held up for almost 3 months through all sorts of exercise, commuting, throwing them in the bag, etc...
I stand by the claims of my original review and I am overly satisfied with the S5. FYI, I am not compensated for this review in any way, just a satisfied customer. Kudos to MP4 Nation and Brainwavz!Read more ›
However, there is one critical flaw that should be aware of if you are planning on purchasing these. The headphone plug is large and bulky, taking up about 1.5 inches in inflexible space that frequently causes it slightly bend when being removed from in an out of your pocket. And even though it looks like it is designed to bend to alleviate stress what ends up invariably happening is the connection of the flat cable to the plug ends up being damaged resulting in sound not going to one or both of the earpieces.
Even though I purchased this one March, by the end of April they had already broken due to this design flaw. Fortunately, I contacted MP4Nation who were able to quickly replace them. However, it is now June and the same issue is happening with only getting sound in 1 ear again. These headphones are not durable at all, so if you are planning to for example use your phone to play music and then place it in your front pocket be aware that these will not last very long. I would suggest looking for other headphones with a better designed 3mm plug.
One day I just got tired of having to spend 15 dollars for a pair of earphones that were not going to withstand the test of time and the daily rigors of a NYC commute so I figured I would try a different brand of earphones that was still budget friendly but durable all rolled into one. Then came the Brainwavz Delta - I purchased the Brainwavz Delta almost one year ago and boy have they held up marvelously! I have abused them and I even used them in heavy snow and they are still kicking! I was so impressed with their durability and their nice sound quality that I wanted to purchase one of Brainwavz's more premium earphones, which brings us to the Brainwavz S5.
Once I received the Brainwavz S5 I wasted no time in burning them in for 40 hours straight with white and pink noise. The packaging was typical of a 100 dollar product, nothing special. But the accessories were a nice touch. Included in the packaging was a nice carrying case with a generous amount of ear tips and the comply tips were a much appreciated bonus! I have been using the default tips since they fit me quite well and I slapped on the comply ear tips on to my Soul SL99 earphones. The packaging and accessories get a 9.5/10.
Now on to build quality. The build quality is excellent! These are probably some of the most durable earphones you will find in the 100 dollar price range.Read more ›
Regarding the audio quality, I didn't notice a huge difference compared to the S1 earphones, but to my ears, the bass was more pronounced - not overwhelming but very noticeable, and it sounded great, especially with bass-heavy music. Vocals had great clarity, and instrumentals sounded as rich as I've heard on any earphones.
The S5 kit includes a variety of earphone tips, and I can't imagine anyone not being able to find a pair of comfortable tips. In addition to the medium-size silicone tips that came already installed on the earphones, there are several other sizes and styles, including both bi-flange and tri-flange tips, and a set of Comply memory foam tips. With the earphone tips properly inserted in your ears, outside sounds are eliminated or at least heavily attenuated. And if the tips aren't inserted properly, the bass sounds are very weak, so it's important to use the tips that fit your ears the best.
Attention to detail is one of the things that make fine products stand out, and with the S5 earphones, those details include a flexible ribbon cable, gold-plated plugs, and a ¼" screw-on stereo adapter plug. And thanks to Brainwavz for a really nice zippered hard case. It's easily the best hard case for a set of in-ear headphones that I've seen.Read more ›
