One day I just got tired of having to spend 15 dollars for a pair of earphones that were not going to withstand the test of time and the daily rigors of a NYC commute so I figured I would try a different brand of earphones that was still budget friendly but durable all rolled into one. Then came the Brainwavz Delta - I purchased the Brainwavz Delta almost one year ago and boy have they held up marvelously! I have abused them and I even used them in heavy snow and they are still kicking! I was so impressed with their durability and their nice sound quality that I wanted to purchase one of Brainwavz's more premium earphones, which brings us to the Brainwavz S5.
Once I received the Brainwavz S5 I wasted no time in burning them in for 40 hours straight with white and pink noise. The packaging was typical of a 100 dollar product, nothing special. But the accessories were a nice touch. Included in the packaging was a nice carrying case with a generous amount of ear tips and the comply tips were a much appreciated bonus! I have been using the default tips since they fit me quite well and I slapped on the comply ear tips on to my Soul SL99 earphones. The packaging and accessories get a 9.5/10.
Now on to build quality. The build quality is excellent! These are probably some of the most durable earphones you will find in the 100 dollar price range. The flat cable is tangle free (which is a God send for me) and the housing is all metal (another God send)! The v shaped connector is a little bulky and it does weigh down the earphones just a bit, I don't care for the size of the connector at all. Build quality gets an 8/10 for me - it would have been a 9.5/10 if it weren't for the weighty connector.
Now for the comfort and isolation. Comfort is pretty good, I have no complaints with the comfort of the S5, the noise isolation is a bit of a different story. Noise isolation is okay but not as good as the Brainwavz Delta. You will not be in your own little world with the S5, but the isolation is passable if you're on a train or a bus. Just don't expect any miracles. Comfort gets a 10/10 and isolation gets a 6.5/10.
Now for the part you all have been waiting for; the sound quality! I have to say, I really enjoy the sound quality of my S5, I really do - they are much better than the 15 dollar Skullcandy earbuds I used to buy and they are better than my beloved Brainwavz Delta. Continue to read down below if you would like a more in depth description of the sound quality:
Treble: The treble is detailed with the S5. It is a little sibilant so keep that in mind if you are sensitive to sibilance. The treble is a bit more emphasized than I'm accustomed to but the detail retrieval makes up for the somewhat impolite treble. 7.5/10.
Midrange: The midrange is recessed with the S5. The v-shaped sound signature does not favor the midrange very much. Vocals came in nice and clear with above average detail but instruments sounded a tad distant. Male and female voices sounded nice and natural but a little distant. I would describe the midrange as smooth and natural. Recessed but enjoyable. 8/10.
Bass: The bass on the S5 is emphasized for sure. More so the mid-bass. The bass does occasionally creep in to the midrange and can sound a little boomy at times depending on the genre of music you listen to. The sub-bass takes a backseat due to the mid-bass hump but there is enough sub-bass to keep the Hip hop heads happy. More sub-bass would have made this a 10 for me... 7.5/10.
While the sound did not completely knock my socks off, I still consider the S5 to be genre friendly and very good sounding for the price. Though most of my full sized headphones including the Brainwavz HM5 do sound better to my ears.
Overall I really like the Brainwavz S5, the build quality and the accessories alone justify the 100 dollar price, the sound quality seals the deal. I recommend it.
I started this with a one star rating, but bumped it up to 2 stars because they really do appear to be well made - if they just had something anywhere near the bass response of my others I'd be happy. Bad purchase.
***UPDATE: After reading my earlier review, the seller contacted me (MP4 Nation - h/t to them for doing that!) and suggested I try changing the ear tips. Although the buds fit snugly and were comfortable (I've owned many pairs), I tried both larger and smaller. The smaller set enabled me to really push the buds deeper into my ear, which improved the bass response. Having them that deep was not very comfortable, and the Sennheisers don't require that, but it worked. I then tried the foam tips they suggested even though I much prefer the rubber/silicone and it definitely helped. They won't last as long, so I'll have to purchase backup/spares, but since they were kind enough to contact me - and their suggestion worked - I'm bumping up to 3 stars, and considering it an okay purchase. Thanks again to MP4 Nation for the follow-up!
Sound from these headphones is ok and requires long breaking time. Earpiece is bulky and prone to falling out. I have had two shorts in the headphones within the first year of ownership of this product. The company offers a two year warranty with the offer of replacement. Again this has happened twice over the first year of ownership. They will not exchange for a different product but will keep replacing the product for two years only. I would consider a different brand next time.
Sennheiser. I was happy with the Sennheier's, but purchased the Brainwavz based on reviews. The sound of the Brainwavz S5 is superior, and I'm very happy with with the purchase. However, I do miss the remote on the cord, that the Sennheiser's had. Although the overall sound quality is quite good on the S5's, it doesn't have quite the richness and depth that I was hoping for, only really noticeable on symphonic music (I'm not sure that this is possible on ear buds) I probably would have to go to over ear to get that richness. The only reason that I did not give the S5's a 5 star rating is for the very slight lack of richness and I do miss the remote on the cord. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase.
