If you follow the instructions on cooking boba/tapioca/bubble tea, the consistency and taste is amazing. The only downside is that the pearls tend to crumble in the bag and are generally fragile before they begin to cook and darken. Also, if the water is not hot enough in the beginning, you get the same problem of the pearls dissolving and things getting a bit messy and/or sticky. If you are patient and dedicated, these are the best choice, but if you want a simpler alternative, try the black minute pearls instead. Less delicate, easy to make, and just as tasty in the end, they are a lovely alternative. It's your choice, though. Either way, boba/tapioca pearls are a deliciously addictive addition to most iced drinks, especially milk teas, but also quite a few juices.

I liked the taste and texture. However, one of my packages arrived with the vaccuum broken and the balls had turned to complete dust. I wrote to customer support, but have yet to hear from them.

You have to boil the balls for 30 minutes, covered, let them sit for another 25 minutes, still covered, then rinse them in cold water. Then you coat them in sugar syrup, which you make by simmering equal parts of sugar and water.

When I received the bag about 40 percent of the beads were already crushed to power and the others appeared to be so old that they crumbled thereafter. It was like no version of tapioca I have ever dealt with before.

Second update 3/23/2013. Everyone seemed to like these in our house... I have ordered them 3 times and they were a big hit at our Chinese New Year party. So I placed my fourth order... And got a DIFFERENT PRODUCT! Not just a different brand, a different product! We had received the same brand boba the first three orders and now I received an instant pearl. A few reasons why this annoys me.... First, you find a product you like you want to keep ordering THAT product. Second the instant pearls are damp (precooked?) and therefore most of the 2.2lbs you are receiving is water. The previous boba I received were dry and had 30-40 servings in a package, this order has far less servings. And what do you do with the unused portion? There are no directions regarding what to do with unused product and it doesn't seem like they will keep for long in their wet state.
I am most annoyed about the bait and switch. Three orders of standard 40 minute cook time boba, on the fourth order you send me some instant junk!!!! I have gone from loyal customer to, I will NEVER order again!

Update: I just placed my 3rd order for these. They have come quickly and week packaged each time. My friends and family all love them!

I received these pearls very quickly, just a few days, shipping from one coast to the other. They were seriously vacuumed sealed in thick plastic bag, the package was rock hard it was so snugly vacuum sealed. When I cut he bag the pearls puffed up about 50%. Then the package was wrapped in bubble wrap, put in a small box, then in a cardboard shipping envelope. Needless to say, they were very well packaged! There was some loss from crumbled pearls, but under 5% loss.

The cooking instructions were simple and clear.

These bobba pearls are odd. Here is why. The bag comes airtight, making the product look small. Once opened the air returns and the product returns to a normal size. The pearls are soft and powdery when uncooked, unlike other pearls I have ordered. Uncooked these pearls will even dissolve in your mouth. At first I thought I had wasted my money but after I boiled the pearls they became a normal color and consistency; though they are smaller than others I have ordered. I won't be ordering from this brand again, but it's not a bad buy for the money. Also the cooking instructions were a bit complicated; I bypassed the instructions, boiled the pearls for about 8 minutes and let them sit in the hot water for about 15 minutes more and they were ready.

Pros:
A good amount of product for the money
Taste good after being cooked

Cons:
Uncooked pearls powdery
Pearls smaller than others I've ordered

Update: 9/3/13: Cooked these Bolle brand pearls up today, and WOW- what a nightmare. These pearls are a powdery, crumbly mess right out of the bag, which translates to many broken pieces floating around the pot as the pearls cook.

During cooking, a thick layer of slime gurgled up, coating the pot and creating a layer of slime on the pearls. Despite regular stirring, thick gelatin-like floaters swam around the pot later resulting in a sticky mess that stuck to the pan and the spoon. In the drink, the cooked pearls clung to themselves. These pearls did not grow much in size during cooking.

I make a lot of boba tea, but these pearls were the worst. I threw both bags away and bought real EFA bobas from a different seller who represented their item correctly.

Original review:
You might want to note that returns are NOT granted with this seller. With that said, I didn't get what I ordered. This wasn't my first order with this seller. They merely swapped brands without saying anything. The difference in product is huge.

Days ago, I received two bags of black tapioca pearls with the understanding it was to be the EFA brand stated and shown in the item description.

EFA pearls are the best I've used in bubble tea drinks for a few reasons 1. The pearls are large and same quality you get in bubble tea shops. 2. They cook up very quickly...5-10 minutes.

What I actually received from this seller, was a brand called Bolle. No comparison! Different packaging and very small tapioca pearls that according to the label require 20 minutes to cook. Due to the seller's store policy, you cannot return items. If this happens to you, contact Amazon as they are good about resolving issues involving product misrepresentation.
