You have to boil the balls for 30 minutes, covered, let them sit for another 25 minutes, still covered, then rinse them in cold water. Then you coat them in sugar syrup, which you make by simmering equal parts of sugar and water.
I am most annoyed about the bait and switch. Three orders of standard 40 minute cook time boba, on the fourth order you send me some instant junk!!!! I have gone from loyal customer to, I will NEVER order again!
Update: I just placed my 3rd order for these. They have come quickly and week packaged each time. My friends and family all love them!
I received these pearls very quickly, just a few days, shipping from one coast to the other. They were seriously vacuumed sealed in thick plastic bag, the package was rock hard it was so snugly vacuum sealed. When I cut he bag the pearls puffed up about 50%. Then the package was wrapped in bubble wrap, put in a small box, then in a cardboard shipping envelope. Needless to say, they were very well packaged! There was some loss from crumbled pearls, but under 5% loss.
The cooking instructions were simple and clear. I have read the other reviews and thought the 'maple syrup' comments were a little picky and strange and I didn't understand because maple syrup smells good.. Right?! Well, they have a weird maple syrup smell when you cook them... And it isn't good. In fact it made me a little sick to my stomach. After cooking them I tried one and they still had the maple syrup smell/taste to the point were I didn't want to eat them. So I put them in simple syrup and set them aside. About an hour later my husband wanted to try a bubble tea because he had never had one and I rave about them all the time. I mixed one up for him (not telling him about the smell or taste) and he LOVED it. I then tried it too, the simple syrup had left the pearls tasting just like they do in my favorite bubble tea cafe! There was the smallest hint of the maple syrup flavor but only because I was looking for it. If I hadn't cooked them ( and smelled them) I would have never known and never noticed it.
The pearls after being cooked were a large pea size. Too large to fit through a normal sized straw, but not as large as I would have liked. I would not describe them as small marble size, they are smaller than that.
I am going to try another brand or two like Possmei, the brand my local cafe uses. These were satisfactory, my husband loved them and I would buy them again, but not so great that I will stop looking for a better boba!
During cooking, a thick layer of slime gurgled up, coating the pot and creating a layer of slime on the pearls. Despite regular stirring, thick gelatin-like floaters swam around the pot later resulting in a sticky mess that stuck to the pan and the spoon. In the drink, the cooked pearls clung to themselves. These pearls did not grow much in size during cooking.
I make a lot of boba tea, but these pearls were the worst. I threw both bags away and bought real EFA bobas from a different seller who represented their item correctly.
You might want to note that returns are NOT granted with this seller. With that said, I didn't get what I ordered. This wasn't my first order with this seller. They merely swapped brands without saying anything. The difference in product is huge.
Days ago, I received two bags of black tapioca pearls with the understanding it was to be the EFA brand stated and shown in the item description.
EFA pearls are the best I've used in bubble tea drinks for a few reasons 1. The pearls are large and same quality you get in bubble tea shops. 2. They cook up very quickly...5-10 minutes.
What I actually received from this seller, was a brand called Bolle. No comparison! Different packaging and very small tapioca pearls that according to the label require 20 minutes to cook. Due to the seller's store policy, you cannot return items. If this happens to you, contact Amazon as they are good about resolving issues involving product misrepresentation.
I am uploading a few photos of the "switcheroo" product I received- Bolle brand pearls with a green label. Look at the difference in pearl size compared to the EFA brand.
Seller, you need to represent your items accurately. You lost a customer.
