Review

Guitarist Gus G (OzzyOsbourne/Firewind). is back with his sophomore release, 'Brand New Revolution'. Mixed by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica, Van Halen, etc.). Just like what he did on his debut, 'I Am The Fire', Gus G. unleashes his punishing arsenal of mind blowing guitar work with a rock solid rhythm section in the form of Marty O Brien (Lita Ford band) on bass. and Jo Nunez (Firewind) on drums. As for the vocal department Gus once again features collaborations with some awesome singers / songwriters such as the legendary Jeff Scott Soto (who appears on "Gone To Stay" and "Generation G"), Mats Levén (who appears on Come Hell Or High Water , If It Ends Today & The Demon Inside ), Jacob Bunton (who appears on Brand New Revolution , Burn , We Are One , Behind Those Eyes & One More Try ) and the awesome Elize Ryd of Amaranthe (who sings on "What Lies Below"). Gus G.'s playing on this recording is absolutely amazing. In fact, to call this six-string fleet-fingered Greek a virtuoso of his instrument would be a big understatement. Sure, Gus G. might indulge in the occasional inclination towards shredding, but when the songs are this full of excellent licks and riffs, all is easily forgiven. Overall, 'Brand New Revolution' is so chockablock full of the great stuff that it likely cannot be all consumed in just one sitting (it takes at least one repeat listen to absorb the whole thing.) If you love great, grooving, fiery melodic hard-rock songs that make you crank your stereo all the way up and drive too fast, this recording is a MUST-have, just be warned: The band is not responsible for any legal ramifications you may suffer for the lead foot you WILL experience if you listen to 'Brand New Revolution' by Gus G. while driving! - Highly Recommended

Tony @ The Dedicated Rocker Society --The Dedicated Rocker Society

The name Gus G is pretty well known these days in the metal and hard rock world, seeing as he has established himself as the guitarist for Ozzy Osborne as well as Firewind. However, now he is back to making a name for himself using his own music with the release of his second solo album Brand New Revolution.

Gus G has quite the reputation with the guitar playing community and really uses this album to show off and highlight his incredibly advanced, already well known, guitar skills. Album opener The Quest sets the wheels running in true style as the guitarist gets straight to it in melting his listener s faces with a guitar led instrumental track. It s fast paced with a continuously pounding double bass pedal pumping through high pitched guitar solos and tremelo picking.

Gus G s guitar ability is obvious, as most people know, and it s almost not worth talking about. He is well established as a professional gutiarist and can play super speed solos and travel the entire fretboard like it s nothing which, of course, is demonstrated throughout the album. However, it is refreshing that he is capable of writing catchy and tuneful guitar melodies such as the chorus section of this track while still creating a hectic and energetic result. It really stands out and just to create a lovely contrast, the song also ends with acoustic guitars and a well performed acoustic guitar solo.

Surprisingly though, the opening track is the only instrumental and the only track that uses the guitar as it s predominent lead. For the rest of the tracks, we are treated to guest singers such as Adler singer Jacob Bunton on various tracks such as title track Brand New Revolution and Elize Ryd on What Lies Below . What this does is it really gives a more complete insight into Gus G s musical ability; rather than just being able to play guitar to a world class standard, he shows that his songwriting skills as well as musical arrangements can compliment and match his guitar playing.

Most of the songs follow the hard rock style, all decorated with various guitar solos. Come Hell or High Water , If It Ends Today and The Demon Inside all feature the rough and ready vocals of Mat Leven. All the guest vocal performances are strong and distinctive but Mat Leven really gives that extra edge on the tracks he sings on, as he often does whenver you hear him.

What really completes this album though, is the slower, more ballad-esque songs Gone To Stay , Behind Those Eyes and One More Try . These songs are a refreshing contrast to the hard rock/metal pounding of the rest of the album, which did get a bit exhausting at times. Not only do these types of tracks give the album a much needed break and contrast but they are also well written songs that also demonstrate a less intense style of guitar writing, which gives more emphasis on some truly uplifting musicality.

Although Brand New Revolution does, at times, fall victim to sounding like a constant wall of hard-rock and metal, it is an exceptional listen. The wall of rock is broken up by slower tracks that are cleverly placed as well as the always impressive guitar solos that although always melt our faces and make us think WOAH in our heads, always have that individual and distinctive feel to them. Gus G is a truly talented musician and it is exhilarating to listen to him to control and peform and write his own music.

Great sophomore release from Gus G! The man is so melodic in his playing that he reminds me of Michael Schenker (who I am a big fan of as well!), his songs just flow! Most of the vocals on this effort are from Jacob Bunton of the band Adler, with Matt Levens & Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen), who all do an awesome job. I really like this album, Gus G is in top form & all the tracks are radio ready. This album is a must have for all fans of Gus G & really great melodic rock!

Gus G is one of the few modern guitarists who gets my attention. Being an old school fan of 80's metal and shred, I appreciate a player who doesn't bore me. All of the tracks are well written, with solos that I enjoy. I do, however, wish there were a couple more instrumentals. Hopefully he gets a little more time with Ozzy, if only to get more exposure. Players like Gus, along with Jeff Loomis, deserve to be considered in the new wave of great players.

Great album. Bought it primarily because I am a fan of Gus's playing but the guest vocalists are the icing on the cake. Elize Ryd (What Lies Below), Jeff Scott Soto (Gone To Stay, Generation G), Mats Levén (Come Hell Or High Water, If It Ends Today, The Demon Inside) and Jacob Bunton (Brand New Revolution, Burn, We Are One, Behind Those Eyes, One More Try) make this more than just a guitar hero fest. Solid effort and worth a listen if you like melodic Hard Rock.

Great metal / rock album. Don't let the mediocre reviews sway you from grabbing this up. Singers include Soto, Mats Leven, Rick Asti (sp?) dude from MasterPlan. Awesome songs, great riffs... Get it, Bang your head. Really? You gonna put up lame points cause a song title has been used too many times before? This will be the only Hell or High Water song you remember, lol. This album is as good as any recent album from MasterPlan, Primal Fear, Jorn, SOTO, Eclipse, or whoever. Now if Nocturnal Rites would just go ahead and get something new out!

I found these guys from satellite radio and enjoyed the song enough that I bought the CD. They kind of sound like Avenged Sevenfold.

Great guitar solos. Thats it. Boring songs that sound like every other nu-metalish act today. Terrible cliche lyrics. Titles like "hell or high water" holy crap that's been done so many times for so many decades. If you have no ideas just put out instrumentals because the pointless drivel is more than irritating. Its a friggin joke.

Decide what direction you want to take. Do you want to be metal? Bubble pop? Pick one and stick with it.

Obviously Gus G can rip up a guitar .. but a songwriter he is not. This is generic, unimaginative drivel.
