This had a few cute/sweet/romantic moments and the author’s writing style was flawless. There was no choppy dialogue or OTT drama. Both MCs were fleshed out characters and it wasn’t catty or intentionally hurtful. It’s a second chance romance with two characters that have to learn to grow from their mistakes and take a chance at love, even when they weren’t expecting it.
The past wasn’t all that distant so I wanted to see more commitment and more proof (through actions and words) that Patterson was ready to settle down with one woman and it needed to be believable. I never felt that 100% assurance from him and wondered why skittish Alayna fell for it so easily after all the internal drama she experienced over it.
Bottom line, both MCs waffle a lot so their rushed realization that they do actually love each other and are ready to commit didn't feel all that genuine. It was a good read but had potential to be so much more if things had been confronted head on and all doubts put to rest once and for all.
While I was happy not to see any of the usual 'misunderstanding' nonsense that serves as a conflict in many sub-par romances, this storyline doesn't have much of a conflict at all. We just drift along until a decision is made. My biggest issue is that it seems as if the author omitted the last quarter of the book. There is a significant two year gap where would could have seem the characters evolve. This prevented the book from being a four star read for me. Cute, but not a story I would reread.
Paula Altenburg does a really great job getting into her character's heads, and this was one of the most believable, refreshing young people falling in love romances I've read in a long time. Patterson is honest about his shortcomings, and is trying to turn over a new leaf. Alayna is also honest about her shortcomings; she knows she's not expressive or good at asking for what she needs. The secondary characters in this series shine; Alayna and Patterson's family are painted in vivid tones, and the dialogue is really refreshing. Alayna is forced to admit her friends might know her better than she knows herself, and that needs to change. I really enjoyed the way Patterson and Alayna had to confront their own shortcomings to understand the misunderstanding between them.
