A steampunk retelling of Cinderella.

Emmeline O’Shea has been an outspoken advocate for the shapeshifter community, which has come under unjust attack from a political body known as the PSRC (Predatory Shifter Regulations Committee), and her robust efforts have landed her a prestigious position as the spokesperson for the International Shifter Rights Organization. She has been selected to give the final address in Scotland before they vote on legislation that will grant protective rights to the shifter community. Because she is fundamentally changing the laws, she is also receiving death threats.

Oliver Reed is a by-the-book detective-inspector who has dealt with Emme’s borderline-illegal activism in the past, and there is little love lost between the two. When his superior tasks Oliver with guarding Emme around the clock to keep her safe until the summit is over, he is frustrated. He has several open cases requiring his attention, and his spare time is occupied with chasing down leads about the whereabouts of his brother, Vincent, a rogue vampire bent on causing trouble in Scotland.

When their airship is hijacked, Emme and Oliver are forced to parachute away before they exit British soil. They take refuge in Emme’s family’s hunting lodge where Oliver is introduced to her abusive stepsisters.

Together the pair must make their way to Edinburgh so as not to miss the summit meeting where Emme will be key in helping to pass legislation that will disband the corrupt PSRC. But between her vindictive sisters and Oliver’s rogue vampire brother, they face danger at every turn, not to mention dealing with their growing attraction for each other.

When Emme is kidnapped – leaving behind only one shoe as evidence – Oliver must find her before it’s too late – and the summit ends at midnight.

Nancy Campbell Allen is the award winning author of 20 published novels and several novellas, which encompass a variety of genres ranging from contemporary romantic suspense to historical fiction. Her most recent books, which include Regency, Victorian, and steampunk romance, are published through Shadow Mountain's Proper Romance line, and the What Happens in Venice novella series is part of the Timeless Romance Anthology collection published by Mirror Press. Nancy writes contemporary romances under the pseudonym, Laney Bell, and enjoys setting these fun stories in a fictional Rocky Mountain ski valley similar to her own home town.

Her formal schooling includes a B.S. in Elementary Education from Weber State University and she has worked as a ghost writer and freelance editor, contributing to the releases, We Knew Howard Hughes, by Jim Whetton, and My Life Encapsulated, by Kenneth Brailsford.

Her agent is Pamela Pho of D4EO Literary Agency.

Nancy loves to read, write, travel, and research, and enjoys spending time with family and friends. She nurtures a current obsession for true crime podcasts and is a news junkie. She and her husband have three children, and she lives in Ogden, Utah with her family, one very large Siberian Husky named Thor, and an obnoxious but endearing YorkiePoo named Freya.

I love this series so much! This one felt a little rushed but the story moved along smartly and the characters were engaging. Allen is probably my favorite author in the proper romance genre and this story doesn't disappoint. Honestly, the only real ding I can give the book is completely superficial and stupid of me to even care about - Emme on the cover doesn't match the description of Emme in the book. She's not even close and it was so distracting every time I went to pick up the book! See, dumb, I know - but it really bugged. Other than that shallow tidbit, the book was great - clean, exciting, part of a fantastic series that I hope never ends!

The parallels to Cinderella were surprising, but I love this steampunk world of Nancy Campbell Allen. Such a fresh perspective on this story and the return of characters loved from previous books. This is an adventure not typical. The damsel in distress is capable of saving herself, but still finds herself in need of her hero/nemesis.

I was drawn in completely to this non traditional fairy tale and found myself wanting the fashions and to see the settings. Add in Vampires and shifters and you have a perfect fantasy set in a Victorian steampunk world.

Part of the fun in this story was to find the nods to Cinderella stores I've seen before. I was completely enthralled and delighted as I read this book.

Emme and Oliver – how fun it is to watch their animosity towards each other come to a screeching halt as they discover their obsession for each other. You just want to eavesdrop on all of their clever repartée and dialogue, and their fun kissing exhibitions. And even though we know the story of Cinderella, it’s so fun to find characters with their own unique personalities that we can totally invest in. Add in some epic supernatural forces both good and bad, and steam punk and all its metallic glory (Plus our beloved characters from Nancy’s previous novels in this series ) and it all makes for a very satisfying an excellent read!

This Steampunk novel has a twist of Cinderella with a twist of mystery and danger.

I have enjoyed all the other books of the series and found they added to the whole storyline for me…but this book is a great stand alone story as well.

The author creates wonderful characters that are well developed, so much so that you are either loving them or down right disliking them with a vengeance.
