Arriving in Paris in 1924, Brassaï rapidly became a shrewd observer of nocturnal Parisian life. He sensed that photography was the tool that would allow him to document his vision of a dying society.

Fascinated by the night, which he found disconcerting, enigmatic, and suggestive, Brassaï photographed its every aspect, from police to prostitutes to the homeless to socialites, all in a dreamlike and mysterious manner. In sixty-four images, Brassaï succeeded in remarkably capturing this unique ambience. This book, meticulously assembled by Brassaï himself, signifies the birth of the artist.

Brassaï, originally from Hungary, traveled to Paris in 1924, where he began to associate with the avant-garde artist community, in particular with Picasso and the Parisian surrealist circles. He quickly established himself as one of the most original photographers of his generation.

A Disappointment

I've seen many of the Brassai images before, however they were much clearer...much sharper. The images in this book are sort of muddled. You can't really make out any detail. I think if Brassai saw how his work is being presented he'd been extremely disappointed. Save your money and get a different version that uses a different printing process.

Amazing book of vintage pics of Paris! John Galliano has spoken about using Brassai as inspiration. Good to add to any fashion or photography library! At the time, Brassai was pretty revolutionary in his subjects. Great for snapshots into this period in history.

Brassai was probably more responsible than most for generating the noir genre associated with Paris but that, I think, was a function of his equipment. The deserted streets could be a factor of the five minute exposure while the close up shots of the street workers, of all occupations would have been necessary because of the lack of electronic flash. When looking at his pictures, we must be careful to pass them back through the filter of his time. BUT, that same filter has given us some beautifully composed images. There are no accidents. Thus, as well as a wonderful collection of very evocative images, the book can act as a reminder of the importance in engaging the intellect to make such images.

Here you can look at scans from this edition and the '87 Pantheon release, which is more detailed and richer. In this release all the images are screened duotones; the prior edition used a non-screen photogravure process.

The book was very good but the condition was not. Brassai: Paris by Night was shipped in the same box along with Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs .
The Ansel Adams book was completely encased in plastic wrap but the book Paris by Night was not. They were shipped together in a cardboard box and left on my front stoop in the snow. The box became saturated from sitting in the snow. Because the Ansel Adams book was completely encased in plastic, it was okay. However, the book Paris by Night was damaged from the moisture since it wasn't encased in plastic. The bottom of all the pages were saturated. I tried drying it out but the pages still showed evidence of damage. Since it was a Christmas present for my son, I had no time to return it. He noticed the damage right away..........I was totally embarrassed and angry at the lack of regard for the books and the delivery method. Both books and the box should have encased in plastic.

Book arrived safely, packed very well, looked new. Also the mailinformation about the coming book was good and informative.
