Feisty, smart, and even bratty as the title suggests, Sage is one of those characters we both love and hate. We want to somehow feel Paul is justified in what he has in store for Sage, the now woman who wronged him all those years ago, but it takes us a while to get there, if you do at all, because Sage is a rich character, as all of Noir’s characters are, and the lines are blurred in this tale. There is no good guy/bad guy here but real people, people with depth, people who are flawed and make mistakes. Noir shows us a strong woman, something that I always admire in her stories, but Sage is also wracked with insecurities. Noir is the master of subtlety here. We get glimpses of Sage’s thick outer skin having cracks through the adept mastery of Noir’s character development. It’s what I like best about Noir’s writing.
Paul is no different. At times, I hated him; and at other times, I admired his sexual skill to both tease and please and push limits. He feels wronged and wants his revenge, but he has a conscience. Through the male point of view, we are allowed into the inner workings of his mind. Told in first person, we might hate Paul. I guess that is a subjective opinion based also on the kinks of the reader. But this reader liked him and all his kinks. He was human, through and through, on a discovery of his own. And I found it delicious, the tortuous teasing, hot!
This is not a jaunt into a fluffy novella or some romantic romp. Do not let length fool you. This is gritty. It hits some darker kinks that are not for everyone, including the element of non-con. But read to its conclusion, and we get a very satisfying ending and a tease of more to come. For my part, I certainly hope so!
The Brat with the Phoenix Tattoo is the first book in a new series by Lilah E. Noir. It's sexy as hell and completely intriguing--can't wait for the next one! Highly recommended!
A great read in its genre.
Warning to others this story made me uncomfortable be sure hard core BDSM is your preferred reading genre.
BDSM isn’t my scene personally, and this isn’t the sort of story I would normally read, but I’m glad I did. It reflects aspects of sub-dom and “rough sex” relationships which are all-too-often overlooked in fiction; it’s all consensual (either explicitly or tacitly), it’s enjoyed, and the dominant party accepts responsibility not to overstep the boundaries. This starts off as a revenge sex story and develops into something else, as Paul’s emotions become engaged and he learns things about himself. He’s unhealthily self-controlled and bottled up, shown by his careful and precise voice.
Both Paul and Sage are damaged individuals, trying to learn how to cope and move on in their lives. Even though I know they’re purely fictional, I hope they’re good for each other!
