This appealing blender looks great, with a rounded triangular shape that marries form and function. It pours perfectly and cleans beautifully, but what we noticed first was the terrific grip on the handle: firm and comfortable, like a great handshake. The lid is also well designed, sealing easily and snugly, with tiny rubber tips attached on three sides to facilitate a smooth release and opening. This blender packs a lot of power, puréeing in seconds and turning eggs and oil into mayonnaise in fewer than two minutes. Five speeds let you whip up everything from chunky salsa to velvety soups; there's also a pulse mode when you need an extra surge to add solids or give something one last stir. As a bonus, this blender looks great on the counter or stores easily in two parts in the cupboard. --C. Whitney-Ward
Editor's Choice:Braun's PowerMax blender is an ideal first blender--not too expensive and still heavy-duty enough for many blending tasks--and is our pick for best blender under $50. It has five speed settings and a pulse feature. The blades are made of stainless steel, which makes them strong enough to crush ice (don't pack the ice too tight, though), and they remove easily for cleaning. The blades, jug, and lid go in the dishwasher, while you wipe the base by hand with a damp towel.

Thus far I have only two slight drawbacks. Using the pulse feature can only be done on the highest speed, which can produce a real mess if you don't have the top on completely tight. I don't use it at all, but just use the first speed as my pulse and it works out very well. Secondly, the feature that prohibits use unless the jar is seated properly is good, but can cause a minor annoyance. Any fluids dripping down the side after pouring (and they do) will settle in the base right at one of the small plungers used to verify the jar is seated properly. This area is difficult to clean, and must be done so by using a toothpick or some other very narrow pointed tool. Still, nothing more than a minor annoyance. Overall I rate this product a buy.
I now have 2 years experience with this blender. Overall, I still like it. Power and simplicity is exactly what I need. But....it is definitely flawed. Can't believe that Consumer Report didn't notice.
The flaw is not in the motor, but is the cutter assembly itself. I,m on my second blender...and third cutter assembly. All three cutter assembly had a different friction coeficient for the turning blade. I bought a replacement blade last year, and noticed that I could barely turn the cutter by hand! When I went to use the blender...it shook and moaned and groaned and started smelling like something was burning! The problem is that the cutter does not turn freely enough, and the motor and the plastic teeth have to take on the extra load. Eventually either one or the other gives out.
I ended up oiling the cutter shaft (from below), and turning it until it loosened up some. That seemed to do the trick....at least for the time being and until the oil is washed off and needs to be redone.
I liked the blender enough, that I bought an equivalent replacement at Walmart for about $35. Thus far, I'm happy with it. But....when buying this blender...check the cutter for free rotation...before spending your money...or running out of warranty.
Follow up: I would rerate this blender to three stars. Four stars when it's working normally. Unfortunately, this is a disposable blender. It will break, before or after the warranty runs out. I no longer have it (broken again) and have gone back to the Cusineart Duet. I would not recommend the Braun because of the well documented flaws and likelihood of breakdown.
What's the secret to its longevity? Before turning it on, I twist the jar a bit to make sure it's seated properly. If it's off just a little bit, the blender will make an awful noise as one or more of the plastic gear teeth snap off. Bleary-eyed or in a hurry, you can easily miss that it's mis-seated -- best to jiggle it. (I learned this lesson the hard way.)
Fortunately, a replacement blade was about $20 (Google "MX2050 blade").
It blends very well if you put the ingredients in the proper order. For smoothies, put frozen berries on the bottom, followed by other fruit, nuts, protein powder, then just enough liquid to cover. First blend at low speed to mix things up, then power on full. If you put protein powder or nuts in first, you'll end up with caked on powder or nuts on the bottom, and you'll have to disassemble it to clean it. If you put the liquid in first, the chunky stuff on top won't get mixed, and you'll have to push it down; plus, the powder will stick to the sides.
For pureed food, make sure to add enough extra liquid or it will blend the bottom without touching the top. The vortex action will be obvious if you're doing it properly.
It's easy to clean, if you rinse immediately after using. I rarely take the blade assembly off; if you do, I would expect the gasket to wear out. When you do disassemble it, make sure to put the gasket between the blade assembly and the glass jar; otherwise, it will leak.
As for noise, I'd say it's pretty average, that is, too noisy; I can easily hear it behind my closed bedroom door upstairs in the morning.
The markings on the base (Braun logo, speeds, etc) wear off easily. It doesn't affect its functionality, but it doesn't look so great either.
This blender was rated # 1 by the major consumer product testing organization, but don't expect it to be as powerful and have as long a life as the Vita-Mix. Still, you could buy about ten of these for the price of a Vita -Mix. It is PLENTY powerful enough for most tasks, and it has a very nice glass jar.
Presently the MX2050 is manufactured in the Czech Republic which I feel is a plus since that economy can use the help. I think that it's good to spread the wealth instead of sending it all to China.
For the price I can definitely recommend this blender. Three out of five stars mainly for the problems with the first unit but also for the sticky dial and longevity concerns (time will tell).
We have had two of these blenders from Amazon. When new I rated it good. But over a year the first jug lost plastic teeth. The second blender after 13 months of a lot of home use broke. The plastic turning gear on the machine spins uselessly. The motor works great but the plastic assembledge of the machine and plastic teeth on the glass jug is poor. I need a new blender now and I surely say there must be better choices.
I thought this machine was powerful and good. It looks great. They promote the powerful engine. But it is like having a car with a super powerful engine but you can't drive it because something else breaks down. I struck out twice with two machines and I am done buying this one at any price.
