The Braun Series 7 790cc-4 electric foil shavers have the world’s only intelligent Sonic technology that automatically increases power in difficult areas. Powered by a lithium ion battery, the Braun Series 7 790cc electric shaver is the smart choice for the discerning man. Significantly gentler and more efficient than any rotary shaver, the Series 7 electric razor contours to the curves of your face with flexible blades on a fully pivoting head for maximum coverage. This electric shaver also adapts to your beard density, using up to 10,000 micro vibrations per minute when needed. With less strokes and pressure required while shaving, the results are smooth skin without the skin irritation. And as the Series 7 electric razors shave as close as 0.05mm, as thin as half a human hair, that smoothness lasts longer, for a highly efficient and superior shave. The electric shaver also comes with a Clean&Charge station, the world's only 5- action alcohol-based system that hygiencially cleans, charges, and lubricates the blades and shaver. Engineered, tested and made in Germany, you are guaranteed exceptional performance every day, for up to 7 years. The best environmental temperature for charging is between 41 degree Fahrenheit to 95 degree Fahrenheit / 5 degree Celsius to 35 degree Celsius. Do not expose the shaver to temperatures higher than 122 degree Fahrenheit / 50 degree Celsius for extended periods of time.

First, the results: I purposely left my beard grow a week before shaving with this Braun Series 7 in order to get a worst case result. I expected it would yank on the long hairs and sting a bit, but it absolutely didn't. Most shavers have cutters like the two outer rounded cutters on this shaver, and there is no way they could have handled the week old beard because they are designed to admit just the very short stubble to be cut in their tiny holes. But between the two rounded cutters is a jagged bar that funnels long hairs into another cutter. So I had to go over my whole face several times. The first passes cut the long hairs short in that middle bar, and the last passes cut the hair close in the rounded cutters. I fiddled with the intensity setting and the end result is a shave that feels as close as a razor.
Second, the design: The shaver itself is very intelligently designed, easy to use without any real instruction. But read the short instructions to see what all the features are, including a timer that lets you know when it is time to buy a replacement set of cutters (they say it lasts about 18 months); you will need to know how to reset the timer. A real bonus is the base that serves as both a charger and a cleaner. It funnels the cleaning fluid through the cutters and back down into the cleaning cartridge, taking away the whiskers with it. The cleaning cartridges are available for about six bucks each, and from the instructions it seems they last about a month. It's my nature to try to find cheaper alternatives, and I noticed that the cleaning cartridge lists only two ingredients: denatured alcohol and perfume. I searched for generic cleaning fluid, and there is a product called Essential Values Shaver and Razor Cleaner, which is a concentrate that you mix with isopropyl alcohol to refill the cleaning cartridges. I may just try straight isopropyl alcohol, since all it is doing is flushing the shaver cutter cartridge. If you don't want that hassle, there are generic cleaner cartridges available for about $4.50 each. BONUS TIP: The cleaning cartridge comes with a cap you pop off before inserting the cartridge in the base. Because the cleaner is alcohol-based it will evaporate. Save the cap that came with the cartridge and remove the cartridge after each cleaning and put the cap on to prevent evaporation. You don't use the base for every cleaning; normally you just rinse the cutters while they are running under hot water.
I also like that for daily cleaning you can just run it under hot water. After I cut the long hair on my face I put it under the faucet and it was impressive how much hair came out. It is also very easy to remove the cutting cartridge to give it an even better rinse. To lubricate the cutters you just put a drop of machine oil on your fingertip and wipe it into the foil of the cutters. They don't include any oil, and I just used the oil I use on my hair trimmer.
The pop-out trimmer for forming the line at the end of the sideburns or to trim a mustache is curved, so it's not super easy to get the cut right. I ended up cutting one sideburn too high and then had to make the other match. But this was my first use and I'm sure I'll figure it out. It cut very well.
If you're thinking of this as a gift, it is in a very nice box, and you do feel like you are opening something special, which is then followed by holding something that has been very well designed. Say what you will about the Germans, they are excellent engineers!
I paid about $160 for this, and when I hit the button to buy it I thought I was over-paying, but decided to get a top line shaver since I would use it every day. If you shop around you'll see other shavers for half the price or less, and they look like they have pretty much the same outer curved cutters for the short stubble, and I expect they work fine. But this one has that center bar for the longer hair, and it has the automatic cleaner. Growing up I remember my dad's electric shaver and how it was always sitting atop a sprinkling of whiskers. With this you just set it in the cleaner/charger. Even if you don't choose to clean it on a particular day the base collects all the whiskers that fall off of it and they will end up in the used cleaning solution and not on your sink or counter. And, it charges at the same time it cleans.
The shaver comes with a nice rigid travel case. The case does not have room for the charger, which is likely on purpose because according to other reviews you can do normal shaves for a week on a single charge. If you want you can pack the charger without the base, and it just plugs into the bottom of the shaver to keep it fully charged. I did not test to see if you can shave using the cord attached.
When looking at the reviews of the different series of Braun shavers (7, 8, and 9) I was thinking I might spend over $300 for the series 9 in order to get the best, but as I read the reviews it really seemed like the series 7 was what I was looking for. I recommend reading reviews for all three series to get the right one for you.
My practice with reviews is to do one soon after I get the product. If it works well, is sturdy, and remains a good value, I will not later modify the review. I'm writing this on 5/8/22, so if there is no update it means that this has been serving me well since this date. Or, I guess, it could also mean I'm dead, or got sent to prison, or was abducted by aliens.
--- Previous Experiences
I have sensitive skin and I have always had difficulty managing my facial grooming and skin care. Previously I used a rotary electric razor, but it caused a lot of skin irritation. I moved on to using shaving gel and Gillette triple blade Mach3, and later Mach3 Turbo, cartridges. I finally settled on using a double edge razor to start, and then the Mach3 Turbo to clean up. Afterwards I would always use a sensitive skin aftershave. While I could mostly manage skin irritation, careful to avoid nicks and cuts, I would only be able to shave with a DE razor/cartridge routine every other or every three days. My sensitive skin could not handle daily frequency - but I still wanted a cleaner daily routine.
I tried the Gillette Skin Guard razor in my routine. It was fantastic. But the cartridges were expensive, and would be used up in a week. This got me thinking about electric razors again, due to the potential skin guard.
I heard that a good foil razor good work for sensitive skin types. I decided to try the Braun Series 7 electric razor after watching some youtube videos about it.... And I have to say that after a few months of use it has exceeded most, if not all, of my expectations.
--- Braun Series 7-790cc type 5692 Performance
I can now shave daily - well, I actually have to shave daily now. And if I have an evening function, I will have to shave with electric razor a second time, in the afternoon. The Braun Series 7 electric razor does not produce as close a shave as the double edge razor or the Mach3 Turbo cartridge. When I say it is not as close a shave - I mean that by the evening a short stubble will be visible again, while a DE razor could produce a shave where a stubble appears the following afternoon. But that is the beauty of it - the Braun Series 7 does not nick my skin, cause razor burns, or tug on the skin. It is an acceptable shave for the day. It can even shave under the nose surprisingly well.
Another unexpected benefit of the Braun Series 7 is that I no longer need to apply shaving gel before shaving. I did try using shaving gel, but it did not change the experience. The foil shaver head seems to glide best after I have washed my face, to remove any skin oils, and fully dried.
As long as I shave every day, or even every other day, the Braun 7 seems to handle it ok. I have tried every three days... and while it works, it does begin to tug a little when the hair follicles are longer. In these instances, I have used another electric trimmer to shorten first, or used the DE razor to shorten before using the Braun 7.
I do still have to use my sensitive skin after shave. That helps clean and sooth.
The only time I have had a mild razor burn was when I kept running it over an area of my face, and pressing deeper into the skin. I wanted to see if more passes could get a closer shave like a DE razor. It wasn't possible, and I just caused an irritation. That was the only time I have had skin irritation from shaving in the months I have had the Braun Series 7.
--- Cleaning The Braun Series 7
This kit comes with a charging station which also can clean the electric shaver. It is advised that you should run the cleaning cycle every 1 - 2 shaves. The shaving station has a liquid cartridge in the bottom with a cleaning solution. This solution smells quite strong, even when the shaver is not inside the station, as the station is open air. It was said on some YouTube videos that this liquid cartridge can evaporate within a month if left open, and it was advised to remove the cartridge and close the holes with the cap. After every shave, I rinse out the razor cartridge with water, and I run the razor in water to help remove hair debris. This also prevents excess debris from building up in the cleaning liquid cartridge. I run the shaver in the cleaning station every other shave. I usually let the shaver drain back into the liquid cartridge for a few hours, then I close the cartridge back up. I set the shaver on the side to air dry, and I place a clean, sterile bag over the charging station so that dust does not accumulate in the well. I have noted that you should not shave immediately, or within several hours, of running a cleaning cycle. The chemicals that are used to clean can cause skin irritation, and needs to evaporate. Rinsing the chemicals away does not seem to help avoid irritation if you need to use the shaver sooner, so I recommend planning carefully.
--- Final thoughts
I have been using the shaver very successfully. Some reviews said that the Series 5 was ok, but that the Series 7 was better, and that the Series 9 may not offer much improvement over the 7. That is why I bought the Braun Series 7 - I have not tried the Series 5 to compare if the cost savings were worth it.
