Featuring an ergonomic handle and smooth lines, Braun's 1,500-watt electric water kettle handily sits on a separate heating element. When water boils--one cup takes only 70 seconds--it's a relief to pick up the kettle and pour without worrying about the plug dragging behind. Once the kettle is removed from the base, it automatically turns off for safety. This good-sized kettle heats up to six cups of water, making it ideal for small meetings at the office or to quickly heat up water (and water only, please) at home. It has an anti-calcification filter to help keep the water tasting clear and clean. --Dana Van Nest

This Braun is just so well designed, it's amazing. My wife loves hers, and recommends it to her tea-drinking friends. Highly recommended.
Edit, December 2007: After many years, our Braun died. I disassembled it and discovered that a plastic strap hinge, part of the on-off mechanism, had separated and was beyond repair. Oh well - off to Amazon for a new one, and I was pleased to see that it was still offered.
Except... The current model has been "value engineered" with somewhat cheaper parts and is assembled in the Czech Republic rather than Germany. It is pretty much functionally the same, though the power cord on the base is now much shorter than it was originally. (We just reused the old base!) Operationally, it does not shut off as quickly as my old one did, but that might be a unit-to-unit variation. We still like it.
The caution I would offer is: do not force the power button on the handle, as this can break the mechanism internally beyond repair.
What makes the Braun particulalrly desireable is, at a time when almost every small appliance is made in the Far East (and of questionable quality), the Braun is still made in Germany of first-rate materials. Worth noting is that Braun paid particular attention to safety with FOUR safety switches!!!
If ever there was a product where form followed function, this is it.
The following are some of the features I copied off the braun.com web site:
Wattage....1,500
Capacity...7 cups / 1.6L [a little less than two quarts]
Easy-read water level indicator (both sides)
On/off pilot light (both sides)
Easy water filling through spout
Concealed heating element
Four-way safety switch off
- when dry
- when lifted of base
- when lid is opened
- when water boils
Cord storage
Washable limestone scale filter
Easy to clean
IMHO well worth five stars!!
The Braun kettle is almost idiot proof (which will be great for my mother in-law a great deal). When it boils, it shuts off... When you open the lid on the base, it shuts off... When you take it off the base, it shuts off... Great for those folks who are just too .... retentive/impatient and have to fiddle with the kettle.
Ok, downside... After it shuts off, you need to wait 10 minutes for a cool down/reset before starting the system again... Not too bad for those of us who can wait or think the water is hot enough, but for those folk who want an instant boil again, this might be torture.
All in all, great investment. I'm glad I spent the money for it. BTW, for those folks worried about plastic leaching, I have a family friend who's a chemist (he's also real environmental-organic freak) and has the Braun kettle as well. He told me there is negligible leaching... He told me you get more leaching from one of those Britta water filters than you do with the Braun kettle. Sounds good to me.
The kettle separates from the base making it convenient to take to the sink or refrigerator for filling. Since the kettle can rotate on the base, the kettle does not have to go back on in a certain direction.
The cord can be wound into the base so that only the length of cord needed to get to the outlet is exposed. Makes the counter neater!
One button turns the kettle on and, for those of you like me who walk away to do other things, the kettle shuts itself off when it reaches boiling. I also like the fact that it shuts off when you lift the kettle from the base.
It fills easily by opening the wide top or through the pour spout. Because it is plastic, the kettle itself stays cool enough to handle without potholders and you don't get that metallic taste in your beverage. Boils fast, too!
Save your stove for cooking. Buy this for boiling water!
