That said, this is a keeper, a notes-in-the-margins and read-every-six-months kind of book. It confirms what I know about being brave, while offering solid strategies to adjust my leadership style to encourage others in their journeys. The phrase "human resources" has always bothered me because of the implication that humans are simply resources, as opposed to people with lives outside of work, personalities, needs, and wants. If you want to remember how to lead real humans in real life with real compassion to get real results, read this book.
I bought multiple copies because many managers I know can use these reminders. If you aren't bringing your whole self to your leadership, you're doing yourself - and those you lead - a huge disservice. And I guarantee you're not as effective as you could be.
After reading this book, I could clearly visualize the type of leader I want to become. More importantly, this book equips me with steps on how to get there. The journey is not an easy one and the book does not attempt to hide this reality.
The reality is you are worth it!
This highly readable book is divided into 4 succinct sections that are subdivided into short, digestible chapters. “What is Brave” helps you understand what it is to be a leader in the 21st century. “Barriers to Brave” defines the common missteps we all make (I noticed more than one that sounded like she was writing about me!). “Pushing Through to Brave” offers specific, actionable advice on how to address your leadership challenges. Finally, “Brave New World” helps you put it all together to become a truly modern leader – a brave leader.
Because of the way the book is organized, it is easy to find topics that might be of specific interest to you when you need a quick reference. A thoughtful reading of the entire book will empower everyone to lead authentically in any capacity: at work, in volunteer organizations, and at home.
This book captures Kimberly's wisdom, and is much more multi-faceted than a typical leadership book. It is well worth a read.

When you go through deep change and loss, it's like being in a different world. You become more acutely aware of what matters -- and what doesn't. Leadership -- caring, interested, mindful and yes, BRAVE leadership -- becomes more challenging. You're raw. And showing up as your best self as well as energizing others' potential can be tough.
I found Kimberly's wisdom, stories, tools and insights both grounding and inspiring. She reminded me of what it takes to be BRAVE. How to be that, no matter how vulnerable we may feel. How to show up authentically. How to be mindful of the impact we wish to have (and must deliberately create) outside of ourselves.
I found beautiful encouragement in her words. Encouragement that helped me honour my BRAVE Dad. Stories that rekindled my own BRAVE self. Stories that made me laugh and sometimes frown. Stories that reminded me of what BRAVE Leadership looks like -- and what it takes. Mostly, stories that renewed my desire to inspire and encourage BRAVE in each other.
I found this so true... "Wherever you are in your leadership journey -- new, seasoned, young, or old -- if you aspire to be the best leader you can be, this book is for you." It is. For more of your best. When you may be at your worst. And, everything in between.
