In the English-speaking world, it is generally unknown that a volunteer Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) fought alongside the US Army in Italy from mid-1944 until the end of World War II (1939-1945). This was in effect a light infantry division, consisting of three infantry regiments augmented with artillery and light armour. It was supported by a Brazilian Air Force contingent of a light reconnaissance squadron as well as a P-47 Thunderbolt-equipped fighter squadron. Although all weapons, uniform, kit and equipment were either American-supplied or American models, there were distinctive Brazilian adaptations to uniforms and other key pieces of kit. This is a seriously researched volume on a little-studied subject matter complete with a range of previously unpublished photographs and specially commissioned artwork plates.

Cesar Maximiano and Ricardo Neto did a phenomenal job with their new book Brazilian Expeditionary Force in World War II. The art work by Ramiro Bujeriro is second to none. This book covers the little known story of the only South American troops invloved during WWII, the Brazilians, and their contribution to the war effort in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations(MTO). Most folks are not aware that 26,000 troops and airman from Brazil(BEF) fought alongside our men of the Fifth Army and 10th Mountain Division in Italy.

This book covers not only the stories of these men, but also covers engagements, uniforms(both U.S. and Brazilian issued), armored, helmets, insignia and plenty of personal photo's. This book is an incredibly complete introduction to multiple aspects of the BEF and it is all done in a short easy to read format. This is the most informative book I've read about the BEF and I would suggest it to anyone who wants to have a complete understanding of our allies from Brazil who wore the 5th Army patch!

I chose this rating because this is the best visual book abot the Brazilian Expeditionary Force in WW2. And, one of the author's is the higher authority in BEF collectibles, with an expertise around 30 years of researches.

I love the plates, taht give us ideas about every branch of service in WW2, from engeneering men to Milipary policemen. The only thing I dislike is it could have more pages. But it's a standard Osprey book.

I would recommend this book to all WW2 lovers, students and militaria collectors.

Good book on a lost part of WWII history

In 1942 Brazil declared war against the Axis and, in addition to the use of its ports and air bases to the Allied antisubmarine efforts, agreed to send an expeditionary force to Europe. Thus was born the FEB.

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force was composed of a division-sized ground force backed up by a Brazilian Air Force element. The first elements of the FEB (its acronym in Portuguese) arrived in Italy in mid-1944 and would see combat in the last months of the European war. Although its weapons were American its uniforms and individual equipment were a mixed bag of items provided by Brazilian quartermasters and U.S. Army stores. In addition to photos and original artwork to illustrate the Brazilian soldiers sent overseas there are individual commentaries and a list of battles and campaigns the FEB participated in as part of the U.S. Army effort in Italy. If this book has a weakness it is that there are no maps to explain where the Brazilians campaigned. Still, a very good introduction to this topic.

A new breathe for modelling WWII Allies

This book is nicely researched and destroys the mith that Brazillian troops used only uniforms and equipment supplied by the USA. BTW, Brazil is the only country from Latin America that sent troops to fight in WWII. You can see a wide variety of mixes with brazillian uniforms, with a hue resembling field grey, american uniforms, personal adapted items resembling the British battledress and even guys using only US uniforms! Uniforms included pilots, medical troops and even a priest. Guns, for instance, included Springfield rifles. Pictures from Italy 1944 / 45. If a historian wants to know a little bit more about this unique division in WWII or a modeler wants to make figures with different items and colours, this is surely the book. Highly indicated.

A cobra is smoking . . .

I had very little knowledge of the Brazilian Expedtionary Force (BEF) before reading this. The illustrations really make it work for me. They show what the Brazilian fighting man wore and how he was armed, and showed them as an integrated unit, with men of all colors fighting alongside each other. They also show the "smoking cobra" patch of the division. Also, the writing is great in telling of the division's formation and their struggles with the Germans. This book also touches on the Air Force contribution, showing the spotter planes, and their great work getting the artillery to hit the enemy, as well as the fighters doing their ground attack missions.
This is a great work to fill the gap in your WWII library. It's worth your time.

The books is a very well done concise history - like all Osprey books. It includes solid information on the First Fighter Squadron that was attached to my father's 350th Fighter Group. A great book to add to my collection of books about those times. Especially like how well the illustrations capture the uniforms of the time.

This Osprey title follows the usual format, with background text, useful colour plates and a good range of photographs. The titles in this series are constrained by length, but this one nevertheless captures the key information for the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. There are few sources dealing with the Brazilian contribution to the Italian campaign, so this is a useful addition.
