Having read the preceding books in this series, I found myself looking forward to my next visit to Havenwood to hear what adventures Ms. Adams' wonderful characters are up to. I enjoy Ella Mae LeFaye’s adventures as she is learning how to live her life without her magical powers. Even without her enchantment, customers eagerly visit the Charmed Pie Shoppe for a taste of the daily offerings. Beatrice Burbank, President of the Camellia Club, a group of high-society Southern ladies from the charming town of Sweet Briar, Georgia, has contracted Ella Mae to teach the members the art of making a pie. Ella Mae eagerly embraced the opportunity. To Ella Mae’s dismay, she finds Beatrice, floating in Lake Havenwood. Ella Mae quickly discovers the secrets hidden deep within the prestigious Camellia Club. In short order, Ella Mae comes face to face with her nemesis, Loralyn Gaynor. All of the characters are well developed. The plot is tightly woven with intertwined subplots. This cozy mystery is unique and entertaining. In Breach of Crust, Ms. Adams skillfully explores a variety of topics: family relationships, trust, friendship, power struggles within an elite community, overcoming obstacles, romance and the world of “witch craft” or magical, powerful beings.
The reader is drawn into the book early on and, it quickly becomes a can’t put the book down, page turner. I was delighted to learn how a number of the loose ends from the previous book were resolved! I adore the setting - a small mountain town in northwestern Georgia, but the interesting characters were what pulled me into the story. Ella Mae’s aunts were a hoot, Loralyn was so wicked, and even Ella Mae's dog "Chewy" has a huge presence. I also enjoyed the paranormal elements in this book which continue to change and develop. This is a fabulous addition to this cozy mystery series, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Any new release by Ellery Adams is cause for celebration in my book, and this Charmed Pie Shoppe mystery is a winner right out of the starting gate! The author, also, included several delicious recipes (which I’m eager to bake. This book may be the best of the series to date! I highly recommend this book to those who appreciate a superbly written cozy mystery with a touch of magic! You won’t be disappointed.
Full Disclosure – A copy of this book was given to me by the author in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Breach of Crust was a good addition to the Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery series. As always, it was good to catch up with Ella Mae and her loved ones (and not so loved ones) in this newest installment. I absolutely love how she draws attention to food sensitivities/allergies and includes recipes for those who must deal with those difficult issues.
However, I do agree with the reviewers who are less than pleased by the proofreading of this book. The Calvin/Aiden, Avalon/Avonlea thing had me puzzled. One reviewer pointed out how much more expensive the Kindle edition is than the paperback and I think that is a valid point. Ms. Adams' work is worth paying more for, but more than a physical book which requires paper, ink, production costs, etc?
While I like 99% of the characters in this series, Reba continues to be irritating. I can see portraying her as a fiesty headstrong woman, but her oversexed persona simply gets to be too much at times. Her offering to show Henry her 'nice pair of golden apples' was completely innapropriate.
I will always support Ellery Adams, as she is a terrific writer and is wonderful to her fans. I wish these points would be looked at though.
“Breach of Crust” is the enchanting fifth book in Ellery Adams’ Charmed Pie Shoppe cozy mystery series. Actually the series is part cozy mystery, part supernatural (many characters in the book have magic powers), and part mythology - it may sound like an odd combination but it works in this series which gets stronger with every book. Adams has done a wonderful job creating the world Ella Mae, her family and friends live in with some of whom having magic powers and others who don't (and don’t know magic exists). This world and the people in it grow and change with every book – especially Ella Mae in this book. Adams takes her time revealing the mystery in this book but by the time she does, I was completely caught up in the storyline. This is really not so much a “who done it” as it is a “why are these things happening” type of book and the answer to that is well done and a bit frightening especially to those living in Havenwood, Georgia. The ending of the book (no spoilers here) grabbed at my heart, made me want to cry, and terrified me all at the same time - well done Ms. Adams!
“Breach of Crust” is another great mystery by Ellery Adams!
