Bread Is the Devil: Win the Weight Loss Battle by Taking Control of Your Diet Demons

BREAD IS THE DEVIL is just like a private appointment with Heather Bauer.
I'm Lucky because I get to see Heather in person, and she has helped turn my life around. I lost 70 pounds in one year, and I've kept it off. It's not about counting calories or denying yourself your favorite foods or a relentless regiment or extreme anything. That never worked for me. I needed easy. It is about knowing your own Diet Devils and dealing with them. It is not about giving up on foods you like, but about knowing their impact and when you can afford to have them. It's not that you can never have bread. I only have it when it is part of something I really like, a Really Great Bacon Cheeseburger or Pizza, and I only need to do that a couple of times in a month. And chocolate. I'm a chocoholic, and I used to get chocolate through ice cream. Not worth it. I now enjoy sampling high quality, high cocoa content dark chocolate with some fresh fruit. A candy bar that would've lasted 4 seconds now lasts 4 days. And then there's FREE foods. I can count on FREE healthy foods (greens, fresh vegetables) to fill me up. My eating habits have been transformed for life. My taste buds have even improved. I enjoy good food whereas I used to just consume it, whether I am eating out or cooking at home.
What drove me to do this? Surprisingly (to me) it was not vanity. It was my health. I tested positive for diabetes and knew I had to do something to lose weight. With Heather's help, I did it. Diabetes gone.
Other Benefits: At 54, I'm able to wear some of the classic suits I bought when I was 30, and people notice!

Heather Bauer's book is a must-have for anyone with wellness or weight loss goals! I've bought copies for everyone in my family. She so clearly and simply lays out what you should do to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. Love her categories...I relate to most of them, esp the "little devils." Her suggestions and tips are realistic and easy to follow. And she is so realistic BUT enables you to get results. I already have, thanks to Heather Bauer. We all need this book! It even makes you laugh because it's all so easy to relate to. Love it.

I've decided to cut bread and gluten out of my diet due to arthritis, but I picked up this book because of the title. I do feel that Bread is the Devil and it is a hard item to ignore. Everyone eats bread and loves to eat it warm fresh from the oven. Yummy with butter dripping off the sides, hungry already. I digress, and now I need to think about a healthy serving of fruits or vegetable instead.

Bread is the Devil is an interesting book that helps you cut the white bread, fried breads, and other empty calorie items from your diet. You can eat bread, but make sure it is whole grain, me I just cut it all out and after 3 months I feel great(my back/spine arthritis is better and my hip feels almost normal again.) But I think that cutting bread out would help many lose those unwanted pounds and help you become healthier overall. Cut those empty fat/calorie/carb filled items from your diet and feel good again. By the way, fat is your friend....sugar and white carbs are the enemy.

Cutting carbs is a great way to lose weight and it is really not that difficult. Have a goal in mind will make it easier to say NO to the Devil carbs out there. Losing weight or just cutting back on empty calories makes this book a good read for you. Keep in mind that not every book can help everyone, so read a few different books on healthy eating and pick what works well for you.

I got off wheat for a couple of years and my body returned easily to a normal weight (60 lbs weight loss). Wheat is so addictive and pervasive and it eventually crept back into my diet. Need to get off the wheat again.

Don't let the title fool you! Heather did not tell me that I have to ban bread or carbs from my diet in order to get healthy or lose weight - or I would not have finished this book! This is a refreshingly honest, super funny, and easy-to-read guide that will help anyone have more healthy eating patterns for life.

Though I think the title is somewhat misleading (because she does not ban bread completely), I think this book would be extremely helpful to anyone trying to lose weight. Here are the reasons why:

1. The focus is on breaking bad habits and patterns of behavior (your "Devils"). These are different for everyone, which is why one plan works for one person and not for another. She helps you identify which exact habits are holding you back (do you snack all day but don't eat real meals? Do you find it hard to eat well on weekends? Do you overeat in restaurants? etc.)

2. She gives very concrete, easy-to-follow tips on how to deal with these "devils." How to eat well when travelling, by plane or by car; how to work exercise into your life; how to handle making healthy choices at a party or on vacation, etc.

3. She provides a "Blueprint" of food categories and how much you should eat in each; plus sample menus & recipes. The plan is so flexible, however, that even when you finish the menus you can easily come up with your own.

4. A REALLY big help: she has 3 ideas for how to get back on track after an overeating binge or generally unhealthy day: the Protein Day, the Volume-Controlled Day or the Veggie Night.

5. Also very helpful: the Ultimate Restaurant Guide. Here she makes suggestions on what to order based on "Stealth" (if you don't want everyone at the table to know you are watching your weight); "Hungry" (if you are just especially hungry but don't want to overdo it); or the "Lean Order" which is what she considers the best healthiest option.

She also has great recommendations on how to make exercise a habit. I liked that the tone of the book overall is very encouraging, sympathetic and inspiring.
