Before I go further, I will tell you that I have never met Liz in person. We have had too many conversations to count, we have been interviewed together on air, we have laughed, argued, cried, bonded over `mean girls' and supported one another when we needed a shoulder to cry on. For years, I have read her poetry, her essays, short stories and her blog. Reading and writing is something that Liz and I have in common but even if I had never known Liz on a personal level, I would still make sure that I kept up with her writing. Because she is just that good.
Here is what I want you to know about Break for Beauty and the author behind it:
You are not simply reading the thoughts and experiences of Elizabeth Hawksworth. No, it's not that simple. You are reading the heart, soul, and truth from a woman who has had many experiences; good and bad. More than a writer, Liz is a feeler first, and she has opened a vein, allowing you to circulate through her world inside and out.
Liz seldom holds back. She is the lone voice in a crowd who will speak up when no one else has the courage. For better or worse, she will tell you the truth no matter how hard or hurtful it may be. This comes through with every word she shares here. Through her, these pages become a mirror, a warm embrace, a well earned smack in the face, and the comfort of a friend.
However open she is, the art of subtlety is not lost on Liz. While her words are dazzling and heartfelt, it's often what you read between the lines that are most effective. She has the poise of ballerina, standing en pointe, mesmerizing and engaging, leaving you begging for more as the curtain falls. She choregraphs a kaleidoscope of originality, bending words to her will and eliciting the gasps, laughter and tears one often feels sitting in the front row of a musical. This book is her stage and we, as readers, are in the hands of a weaver of happiness, sadness, and all the magic that lies between.
The only thing about this book that let me down is that ended. As I came to the last page and realized I could scroll no further, I knew that I had been holding my breath. I realized that day had turned to night and that I had lost track of time. My `Break for Beauty' had come to an end and this is where I will leave you with a warning:
Make no plans as you begin this book, because you will feel compelled to cancel. Turn off your phone. Settle into a comfortable place, but make sure you have access to a box of tissue. And most of all ... get ready to view a life lived in the most honest, critical, and heartfelt way possible.
Break for Beauty. You deserve it.
My favorite pieces by her are the ones that are most honest and truthful. In "I Carried You" we get to meet a younger Elizabeth. One who was struggling with what it meant to be both a Christian and gay. While it's one of the few non-poem pieces in the book, it's still from the heart and beautifully written. She writes candidly about her struggles with depression and mental illness. She holds nothing back.
She writes about failed romances and being bullied in school with so much heart, you see inside her heart through her words. Her writing is a beautiful thing and this book feels a bit like you've stumbled across a woman's diary with her soul clearly written out amongst the pages. It's there in front of you, wide open and raw as can be.
And it's something we can relate to as we read along. You get this feeling as you read that she nailed it... She nailed that exact emotion, that exact feeling as if she was there when you felt that way or experienced exactly what you have.
Her book, and her writing, are truly hidden treasures.
I highly recommend Break for Beauty...it truly is a journey worth taking!
I particularly loved the longer pieces and her openness in writing on thorny topics like sexuality and religion. She left me wanting to know more. Well done.
