Editorial Reviews

Review

A rich collection of challenging studies that, in addition ot supplying useful data on the performance of democratic institutions in a variety of settings, gives us a good example of how collaborative, cross-national explanatory research can be conducted.

Linz and Stepan offer a clear, concise and well written introductory explanation of the process of the death of democratic regimes. Pull this one out and go down the list when you think you have a clue about what is going on, big picture, in a regime and you'll likely discover you were mistaken or possibly greatly over exaggerating. Perfect gift for the hysterical pundants in your life (if for nothing else than to let them know that you know they're full of it).

Sounds like we are there given the current situation. Therefore, a must read.

Juan Linz is one of the great political sociologists of the 20th century. A Spainard who was nurtured by Franco's authoritarianism, his work addressed totalitarian, authoritarian and democratic regimes -- that is, autocratic and modern democratic political systems This research led him examine the nature of regime change, which he calls transitions. In The Breakdown of Democratic Regimes, he provides an introduction to a book series that addressed the decay and collapse of a democratic regimes in Souther Europe and the Americas. He uses a vocabulary designed to define and identify the political actors present when a democracy is in crisis, specifying their potential for action in critical situation, their interrelations and their significance.

I intend to reacquire this book in order to reacquaint myself a democratic crisis theory. The need for his work should be obvious given the emerging crisis in the western democracies.

Nearly incomprehensible academic speak. And I’m a law student and a former editor of a legal blog.
