Breakfast with the Dirt Cult Kindle Edition

"I'm going to make a pinkie-swear with you right here and now, Tom Walton; when, not if, you return from Afghanistan, you must come up here and I will have a mad passionate affair with you..." With this proposal, Thomas Walton, an infantry soldier in Alpha Company, Second Platoon, arrives at the threshold of events that will change his life forever.

Breakfast with the Dirt Cult chronicles the days of love and war in the life of Tom Walton. Torn between a beautiful, bibliophilic, Canadian ex-stripper and the hunt for Al-Qaeda in the mountains of Afghanistan, Walton finds himself forced to grapple with being a young man in the days of modernity.

While Breakfast with the Dirt Cult has been written as a novel, it is based on a true story. The names have been changed and the chronology has been condensed for the sake of editing.

Review

From Publishers Weekly
"Rude, raw, and rambunctious, this tour of duty into the no man's land of sex, politics, and societal expectations gleefully bashes politically correct gospels. Army soldier Tom Walton's life is altered by a chance meeting with ex-stripper Amy, who promises him "a mad passionate affair if he returns from Afghanistan. Amy is a sensuous metaphor for Tom's evolving love-hate relationship with the human condition; her sensuality is a ghost haunting him from the evocatively captured misery of military training to the terror of deployment. But if Tom makes it back to Amy, is he facing another battle in her arms? Finlay creates in Tom a contradiction of good humor and angst, parading instead of disguising his emotional warts. Occasionally overwritten and erratic in structure, this intense semiautobiographical novel is as much a sobering examination of a man's maturity as it is a righteous condemnation of self-serving cultural roles. Fiction as it should be: dangerous, hurtful, and cathartic."

From IndieReader
"What begins as William Blake's "hapless soldier's sigh" becomes an anguished howl of anger at what has happened to America...BREAKFAST WITH THE DIRT CULT is a coming of age story set against the horror of war. It is a compelling look at the evolution of a soldier's beliefs as he struggles to make sense of what has happened to him and the people around him."
