This charming, Academy Award winner (1979, Screenplay) cycles high on comedy as four friends come to terms with life after high school. When top-notch cyclist Dave (Dennis Christopher) learns that the world's bicycling champions are always Italian, he attempts to turn himself into an Italian, driving his parents (Barbara Barrie, Paul Dooley) crazy. But everything changes after he meets the Italian racing team-an encounter that ultimately leads him and his friends (Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley) to challenge the local college boys in the town's annual bike race.

I wonder why they don't print more copies. It is an older movie but involves a couple of themes that have universal staying power in America.
First it exposed Americans to the sport of cycling. Second it was a coming of age movie. And third it pitted the local kids to the rich snobby college kids.
The main cyclist is actor Dennis Christopher. He is probably best known as the guy Eddie on It. He was also on chariots of Fire.
This movie deserves to be reprinted. I had to wait several months for the price to go down. I love this movie. It also stars Dennis Quaid.
It is a great movie with a wonderful ending. If I had children I'd be very happy if they would watch this w me. It is a great family movie full of hope.
The story itself is a non-gushy portrayal of life in a small town, even if that town is dominated by a major university. The entire thing was filmed in and around Bloomington, IN. It doesn't have an entirely happy ending, or maybe even an ending at all, but it's tied together brilliantly to make you care about the characters. Even the dad becomes more real as the story progresses. I've always thought it was a "sleeper" and under-appreciated. It's a brilliant film and holds up well with age.
If you're into cycling, it's one of the best (if not the best) movie involving cycling.
It's definitely dated (1979), but still entertains me in 2015.
Mixed in with the cycling are subplots of: growing up, romance, and the juxtaposition of college graduates versus those never went to college.
Paul Dooley as the anachronistic father is hilarious and Barbara Barrie as the cooly constant mother play their supporting roles very well to Dennis Christopher's star turn as the physically gifted bike racer who is obsessed with Italian racing stars. It is interesting to see how well he is accepted by his friends (Quaid, Haley and Stern) who have no understanding of his love of bikes, but are bound to him with their common childhood friendship. All of the characters could have come off as flat, two-dimensional caricatures, but everyone presents their parts as fully developed characters.
I watched this movie with my three oldest boys and the movie showed them good values, morals and still allowed them to laugh at some silly behavior. There are some very great lines in the movie and the entire family can sit down together without fear of inappropriate language, or anything that may require a quick explanation of human sexuality. This is a forgotten gem of a movie.
It may not be perfect, and there are a few minor plot inconsistencies (that's a very quickly discovered pregnancy!) and some awkward acting by one minor character ("you gave me your word!"), but otherwise it is a terrifically well-acted and well-edited film with some really great camera shots and a terrific soundtrack, with just the right amount of "italian" music. The movie is sweet but never sappy, always maintaining a believable balance between small town Indiana life and the more "Hollywood" elements of the story.
I saw this in the theater when it first came out because I was a biking enthusiast but I decided to buy (not rent) it here on Amazon because it is one of those movies that never gets old (at least for me).
