My friend Alli will give you a new perspective on this concept she calls breaking busy. She will make you laugh out loud, perhaps shed a tear, and challenge you to think long and hard about the impact busyness has on your everyday life - the choices you make, your interactions with the people closest to you, and your relationship with God. If you apply the principles Alli outlines in the book then you will not only feel less stressed, and more fulfilled, but you will also live a life of fruitfulness. (CHRISTINE CAINE Founder of The A21 Campaign and Propel Women. Author of Unashamed.)

If you have breath in your lungs, you’re probably busy. (And maybe even out of breath!) It’s easy to get caught up in tasks and to-dos, but in the midst of the manic we lose the beauty of life in exchange for busyness. Stop running in circles and start living in the moments. With humor and humility, Alli not only shares her candid failures and follies but gives practical and useful tips on how to break patterns of busyness. Her experiences allow us to enter into her story and learn how to get off the hamster wheel and start living the life we always wanted to live! It’s time to Break Busy. (BIANCA JUAREZ OLTHOFF, teacher, speaker, and author of Play with Fire: Discovering a Fierce Faith, Unquenchable Passion, and a Life-Giving God)

I don’t know when or how busyness became a status symbol, but I am so glad that in Breaking Busy, Alli Worthington is calling us all back to a better way of living! (JON ACUFF, New York Times bestselling author of Do Over: Rescue Monday, Reinvent Your Work, and Never Get Stuck)

Breaking Busy speaks into the life of every woman who strives to spend her time, energy, and talents on the most important priorities in her life. As a working-mother authority, Alli Worthington transparently guides her readers through her own life transitions and tough choices, sharing her insights in both a thoughtful and whimsical way. This book brilliantly combines storytelling with action planning for life-impacting change. Breaking Busy is a must-read for every busy woman searching for peace and purpose amidst the demands of a crazy life! (DEE ANN TURNER, Vice President, Corporate Talent, Chick-fil-A, Inc.; author of It’s My Pleasure: The Impact of Extraordinary Talent and a Compelling Culture)

Alli Worthington has learned the difference between simply having a full life and truly experiencing life to the full. She shares her secrets in this warm, funny, and wise book that will help all of us finally trade “busy” for God’s very best. (HOLLEY GERTH, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of You’re Already Amazing)

Breaking Busy is a great read for women who feel like they don’t have quite enough hours in the day to finish their to-do list --- in other words, most of us! Alli’s voice is authentic and witty, plus her content is uber-practical. Whether you’re a harried mom with french fries littering the floor boards of your minivan or a high-level executive with more meetings than your iCal can keep up with, this book will help you navigate the next season of your life with significantly less stress and a lot more genuinely relaxed smiles. (LISA HARPER, Bible teacher, adoptive mom, and author of Believing Jesus: Are You Willing to Risk Everything)

Alli Worthington strikes you as the kind of girl who can have and do it all. She’s remarkably successful, juggles a wild and crazy family, and yet manages to always show up looking smart and snappy. If I didn’t know her better I would be intimidated! But here is the truth: Alli is one of the most genuine, thoughtful, strong, and stable women I know. Her book Breaking Busy is an honest, insightful, and hilarious telling of her own journey to (as the subtitle says) “find peace and purpose in a world of crazy.” Read it and know you’re not alone and that you too can break busy. (JENNI CATRON, leadership coach and author of The 4 Dimensions of Extraordinary Leadership)

No offense to anyone else, but I think Alli Worthington might have written this book just for me. I needed Breaking Busy! --- but I’m not alone. This book is practical, yes, but it’s also wise and warm, like a good friend who helps us all to find the real way forward into a life less busy and more fulfilling. (SARAH BESSEY, author of Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith)

The secret to a life of fulfillment is all about getting off the busy train. In Breaking Busy, Alli Worthington will show you just how to ban busy, live better, and laugh all the way home. (CLAIRE DIAZ-ORTIZ, author and Silicon Valley innovator)

Alli Worthington’s Breaking Busy is a breath of fresh air. Her honest storytelling and practical advice will resonate with any person who has uttered the words “I’m so busy!” (JESSICA N. TURNER, author of The Fringe Hours: Making Time for You)

Alli Worthington’s “Breaking Busy: How to Find Peace & Purpose in a World of Crazy,” which solidified what I’ve been learning the last several years. It’s a practical, real book with plenty of advice worth hearing and real life tales to make you giggle.

Just look at the chapter topics: Capacity. Relationships. Calling. Editing. Thoughts. Traditions. Time. Decisions. Communication. Worth. Those are all relevant to everyday life – the routines and motions that make up our usual days and the bigger picture of life. It’s when we slow down enough in our ordinary days that God gives us a glimpse of the big picture – of what he has for us. “Breaking Busy” reminded me that God has me where he wants me, but trying to control everything around me conflicts with my calling to serve him.

Later in the book, Alli talks about how she had to make a choice about believing God – and that’s a choice we all have to make if we’re going to let go of the desire to control our lives. She also contrasts worry and anxiety – which is important for all the pressure society puts on us to be more, look better, exercise more, eat this and not that, be there and here at the same time, and maintain perfection in the process.

We can’t be all things to all people, but we can be our best selves to the people who matter most and the people God calls us to serve. We can have hard days and still be grateful for what we have and where we are. Like Alli said, “Gratitude is the antidote to anxiety.” The last few years have been packed with lessons on letting go, not worshiping productivity, trusting God and believing his promises, and choosing joy. And this book ties so much of that together for me.

So much wisdom between the covers of this book. It has challenged me to re-evaluate my capacity and re-prioritize. It has had me on my knees and seeking out the quiet. I have said NO more since reading this book and so many of the right YES's have happened. One of my key takeaways was when Alli was talking about Jethro coming to Moses regarding his capacity and the solution. I think about this EVERY SINGLE DAY. Working on finding my sweet spot. Thanks Alli, you are an inspiration and you continually challenge me. xoxoxo The Park Wife

In reading "Breaking Busy," I had a hard time relating to busy and burned-out Alli Worthington. Alli shares stories of flights, speaking engagements, blogging, founding Blissdom events, consulting, business coaching, writing a book, becoming executive director of Propel Women, raising five sons, and being a full-time working mom with a stay-at-home-husband. The decisions and stresses Alli faced seemed foreign to my life as a stay-at-home homeschooling mom of three. In fact, the very first story in the book (about falling asleep on an airport shuttle and misplacing her cellphone in her bra) and analogies to capacity overload so failed to capture my attention that I was ready to stop reading by page 20. I was also perplexed by Alli's decision to quit Blissdom on page 79, with no idea what her next job would be, when she was the primary breadwinner in her family. It wasn't until page 155 that Alli was offered the position at Propel Women, so for most of the book I was left wondering what she would do next. As a result, most of this 218 page book dragged for me.

However, Alli does share many helpful lessons that she learned along the way that anyone can relate to. As she addresses her need for better time management, she talks about relationships, calling, choices, worry, expectations, decision-making, communicating, and finding your worth. "Breaking Busy" progresses almost chronologically through Alli's life, explaining how she dealt with each of these things along the way. She shares a lot of scripture, prayers, and advice from Christian friends and writers. I enjoyed her practical applications and was able to glean new insights from her use of things like a "Time Diary" (pg. 140) and a "Stop-Doing List" (pg. 146).

Okay, so I NEVER write reviews and things, but this book is worth the exception. Breaking Busy isn’t about time management. It’s about LIFE management. There was so much GOOD, PRACTICAL stuff in here that it took me a full month to read. (Normally, I would devour a book like this on the weekend.)

Why the snail pace? Because I wanted to think through, pray over, and really USE the tips in this book.

Alli finds that sweet Trifecta of Awesome all self-help books strive for (but very rarely actually reach).

1. It’s fun to read. Alli has a great personality that pops through in the first 20 pages. (The vibrating cell-phone bra in the middle of the airport - totally related that that.)

2. It emotionally connects. There were so many good quotes in this book. It felt good, to read something and feel like the author GOT IT. She was speaking the language of my crazy so-called life.

3. It gives you stuff to do. I’m a git ‘r done kind of gal. It’s not enough for me to finish a book and say, “that felt good”. I want ACTION. I want SOLUTIONS. This book offers exactly that. On every chapter. It’s refreshing to not only feel like someone feels what you’re going through, but can actually help you FIX it.

Well done, Alli! So thankful that this book exists. I’ve picked up another copy for my sister. Looking forward to the next one! *hint hint* :-)
