Slate: Oh Slate! What a tortured soul. When Rayna sees him again after a 6 year absence, she almost doesn't recognize him. She remembers a sweet guy that treated her like a queen but now he's angry and fights all the time. As she peels back the layers, she finds that the guy she remembers is still in there if only she can get him to see the light and overcome the trauma from the fire. Slate doesn't see himself as worthy of anyone's love so when Rayna pushes her way back into his life, he's not sure what to make of it. All he knows is that he prefers the darkness of the drugs and fighting, will he have the courage to step back into the light?
Zeke: Zeke has stolen my heart. As the youngest Declan brother, he seems the most level-headed but he is guarding traumatic secret, even from his brothers, which has dictated how he guides his life and is the foundation for all his walls guarding his heart. When he crosses paths with Lurlene one afternoon, he finds his foundation shaken. Lurlene makes it her quest to break the infamous Zeke Declan of all his rules. What she doesn’t expect is to find an incredibly smart, funny and genuine man who she is at risk of losing her heart to. Will she be able to break through to Zeke so that they can both find their HEA? What a fun and exciting journey for both of them with several twists I didn’t expect for either of them. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
I wipe my bottom lip, ‘cause as he mentioned, drooling is not beauty queen decorum, and observing him eating that damn apple and talking about freaking pies – hell, it’s got me torqued.
I’m not usually this easy, but Jax Declan always had a way about him that reached right in and made my entire body kick and scream like a kid refused at a candy store.
You listen to me, Emmie Rue. I will never ever hurt your heart, princess. I will never break it. The only thing I want is to be a part of it. I want you to feel me deep inside of it.
No. You are Superman, but sometimes even Superman needs to be saved.
Babe, what you see in my eyes, it’s got nothing to do with me. And why you’re the only one who sees it… Well, that because that glint is nothing more than the reflection of you. You are and always have been that light you speak of in my eyes.
Some boys will keep it, some will break it, and some boys they just won’t want it. You gotta be careful who you give your heart to.
I want to be his any and everything. At this moment, all I want is to be his.
Mom says the gym smells yucky, but I like it. Smells like Dad's leather jacket, sweat, and a little like my oldest brother, Jax's room. Mom says that smell is puberty. I'm not sure what puberty is, but ever since Jax got it, he got some muscles and he shot up a few inches too. I want some puberty. Mom says I'll have to wait a few more years before I get it. I hate being the youngest. I'm always the last to get anything.
His brows draw together as if I'm a book he's reading and he just ran into a word that he doesn't know the meaning.
“What am I thinking? I'm not, that's the problem. I'm lost to his masculine scent, his charming smile, and his twinkling eyes. He's girl goo, and once he spreads a bit of his charm on you, it banquets.”
Don't let the sweet little Miss School Teacher bit fool you. My sis here can change the oil in her car, she's got a wicked curve ball, and when she's pissed off, she swears like a *ing trucker.
...when I first saw you, I was afraid to get too close. When I got too close, I was afraid to kiss you. When I kissed you, I was afraid to touch you. When I touched you, I was afraid to let you into my heart. Now that you're in my heart, I'm afraid to lose you.
Jax was a bit dark and very sensual… more like incendiary hot and quite erotic… but in addition to all that lovely steaminess, there are tendrils of several interesting stories that caught my interest and squeezed my heart. When friends decided to return to the area where they had been reared for a summer vacation, they found their previous teenaged crushes had significantly changed. The boys were now men, but not all the changes were positive ones, and it seem their history was not at all as they remembered. As always, Kelly Gendron tells entertaining, thoughtful, and compelling stories while she builds the sizzle and push/pull of the second chance romances that have old and new secrets that keep popping up. I enjoyed the introduction to the various players during Jax that carried through the rest of the series.
All three books in this set were diamonds but Zeke was my favorite. Ms. Gendron’s writing has never failed to entertain. Her characters tend to be edgy and flawed, yet I still managed to fall for her lovable bad boys every single time! Zeke was one of her best. The character of Zeke was a devilishly handsome player that oozed charisma and had females dropping at his feet despite his point-blank one and done rules. Knowing Zeke was a playboy going in, I expected not to like him much, and I also expected a lot of sweaty sheet action – wrong on both counts, but I wasn't the least bit upset to be in error. The story was surprising, emotive, relevant, thoughtful, and well paced. I just wish he had more brothers.
I loved Jax and Emmie's story. Some of it was sweet, some not so much, but together you just new things would get there for them. Jax also introduced up to the upcoming characters, teasing, hinting, creating doubts of true romance.
Slate's story is the saddest. He has his brothers and not much else. The change almost destroys Rayna. How ironic that she had returned to the Bayou to destroy him. Rayna's strength is just what Slate and the brothers need to have a future, whatever that entails.
Zeke is the guy with all the rules, more like commandments for sex and nothing else. Lurlene was in violation of all. Zeke soon learns that rules are made to be broken.
