Overcome fear for good
The Bible calls us to "fear not" on many occasions. But just how do we accomplish that when every news item seems designed to get us wringing our hands? Using her own story as a catalyst, Maria Furlough discusses how to overcome fear for good. With practicality and passion, she shows us the steps we can take to bring those fears to God rather than act on them and to trust God with the future.
When we give God full control over our lives, choosing his sovereignty over our own ability, we can break the cycle of fear, grow through suffering, and trust God to fulfill his promises of protection and peace. If you are filled with anxiety about your personal circumstances, the state of the world today, or even your fear-clogged social media feeds, you'll welcome this hands-on journey from fear to freedom.
"Welcome wisdom--earned in the trenches--that will help you break the fear cycle and find the peace your heart longs for."--Jennifer Dukes Lee, author of The Happiness Dare and Love Idol
"When fear rises up, our first instinct may be to either completely avoid it or fall victim to worst-case scenarios. Maria Furlough offers an alternative, issuing the invitation to break the fear cycle altogether in this gentle and deeply personal book."--Emily P. Freeman, author of Simply Tuesday
"Fear finds its paralyzing power in its ability to mentally transport us into imaginary places of pain where the reality of God's presence, power, and provision never show up. Maria Furlough has written a helpful book filled with practical and real-life wisdom for breaking the cycle of fear and faithfully overcoming the harsher realities of life in a painful and broken world."--Larry Osborne, pastor, North Coast Church, and author
Maria Furlough is a wife, a mother of five, and the head of women's ministry at Lake Forest Church in Huntersville, North Carolina. She has been writing and teaching Bible studies for fourteen years and currently writes on the blog True Worth at www.mytrueworth.org.

Also, I'm just thankful for an author that tackles fear in a very real and honest way. She was conversational- not dry or preachy. Her words were raw and vulnerable- she doesn't try to be the "perfect" blogging author or Christian influencer. She lays it all out there in this book- how she wrestled with God, doubted Him, was angry at Him. And the beauty of that was getting to see God come through for her in all of the small, beautiful, big and very tangible ways- and realizing He can and will do the same for me. Will be buying copies for all of the worrywarts that I love!
TIP: Be sure to highlight the practical tools and underline the soul-soothing sentences — this is a resource to return to time and again, as well as a blanket of peace with which to rest.
(I am a mama, as well as an author, who has held two full-term dead infants in her arms. I soak up Maria's insight and am proud to recommend this book. I received a copy from her, but this is my own personal opinion. No review was required.)
Maria takes us through the fear journey and helps us take those thoughts captive and work through them with Scripture as our guide. She reminds us of God’s promises and that we should not fear the pain, but press through it to see the bigger purpose - peace.
“Obtaining peace is not a blissful walk in the park; it is a hard-won battle, and peace is the prize.”
It’s hard work, but we can break the fear cycle with God at our side. It does not mean that there will not be grief or sadness, but rather, God - who is with you, comforting you as you walk that path with Him, will ease that pain.
In Chapter 8 of the book, Maria lays out God’s Promises of Protection. There are 14 promises backed by Scripture that not only give comfort as we confront our fears, but offer us a guide to proclaim God’s truths and soak in His goodness.
I wholeheartedly recommend Breaking the Fear Cycle to anyone looking to overcoming their fears. Pick up your Bible, pick up this book and absorb all the gems that God is whispering to you. There are questions at the end of each chapter that help guide you through each section. One of my favorite parts are the prayers at the end of each chapter as well. Maria’s words that pray over you as you face your fears. Prayers of encouragement and love.
