Breaking A Legend is the debut novel for author Sarah Robinson. Breaking A Legend is told from dual points of view and follows the story of Claire and Rory. Claire wants nothing more than to forget about her past and start over. Everything is going to plan: new job, new friends, and some interest from ex-MMA fighter, Rory Kavanagh. While at first Claire tries to deny any feelings for Rory, it quickly becomes harder and harder to pretend….Rory had it all: fame, fortune and an exciting career. That is until one day, Rory gets a major injury and looses everything within a matter of minutes. Then Claire comes into his life and is like a breath of fresh air. She makes him want to fight for the life he once had. Will these two get the HEA they both want and deserve?

I really like Claire. I felt like she was a strong character, who had been through a lot and was just looking for a chance to start over. Her struggles and fears were real and easy to connect with. I adored Rory. I just wanted to give him a big hug. His life sorta went downhill after he got injured. He turned to alcohol and drugs to dull his pain. And then Claire came into his life. Claire woke up something in him that he thought was gone. She made him want to be a better man and to get back the life that he thought he lost.

Claire and Rory had some really great chemistry. Claire really brought out the alpha/possessive side in Rory. They complimented one another well and really came into each other’s lives at just the right time.

I also really loved Rory’s family. They are exactly what I think of when I think about an Irish family. They are close, in each other’s business, they give each other crap, but you can tell that they really love and care about each other.

Clare has lived a rough life. She has a past (and an ex) that has made her feel horrible about her life. She finds the opportunity to escape that life.
In the process of her running she finds herself at O'Leary's,the town's local pub. There she meets the legendary Kavannah family. They own the local gym. Rory Kavannah was a professional MMA fighter until he was so badly injured he couldn't fight anymore so he started training up and coming fighters, including his brother Kane.
Rory turned to drugs and alcohol to help deal with the pain from his injury. His drinking at the local pub is how he ended meeting Clare. She had no idea who he was or how influential his family was. The only thing they cared about was the instant attraction.
Clare never told anyone about her past. Then the dreaded day came that she knew that would all have to end. She would have to either run again or tell all.
What caused Clare to try to run again? Do the Kavannah's find out enough to be able save her or does she have to save herself?

***Please note that the last portion of this review does have spoilers. If you do not like them please do not read this review***

The description was intriguing, an MMA star and hometown boy of a huge and well known family falls from grace and meets a woman who is running from her own demons meet and fall in love, and in all honesty the book started off very promising, but as the story progressed there were some aspects that just didn’t sit well with me and unfortunately lessened my enjoyment of what had the potential to be a great story.

I am going to be unable to keep this review spoiler free in order to properly explain my rating, which is definitely not my normal modus operandi, so will be going about this one in a different manner altogether.

The good aka promising:

I’m a sucker for books about big families. I love the dynamic it brings to the story and how it gives a deeper insight to the MC and in this case the Kavanagh family was awesome! I loved the bantering and bs’ing that went on between them and could feel the love. *This aspect alone is the one reason I am considering giving the next book in the series a try*

Ace, the dog. Yup, the dog get’s his own shout out. He was apart of some of the best moments in this book and really did a lot to show me just the kind of person Rory is.

The prologue definitely had me ready to fall down the rabbit hole and I enjoyed the MMA portions of the story.

The okay aka I can deal and go with it:

Rory and Clare. While I didn’t dislike them, I can’t say that I loved them either. Rory, of the two, was the one that I liked the most.

What is it that attracts us to the underdog? What is it that attracts us to the alpha male? It must be in our DNA! We still love to submit to the "caveman" and still cheer for the downtrodden seeking to succeed.

After losing his last fight due to his stubbornness ( and a seriously broken leg), Rory Kavanaugh is a vessel without a rudder. Ten months of rehab after his leg was put back together, he is still in pain and hooked on pills and liquor. There is no purpose to his life anymore. His purpose in life was the cage and maintaining his status as one of the top 10 MMA fighters. Now, he has no idea what to do with his life. Even his once close ties with his family has taken a hit. He feels guilty because he knows he has not lived up to their expectations. In addition, he has no idea or will to turn his life around.

Meeting Claire is the first thing that makes Rory think twice about his life. The attraction is immediate. As she meets him for the first time while he is thoroughly drunk at the bar where she works, they cannot help but notice the easy banter and the electricity between them.

Claire comes with her own baggage. She is running away from her past and fearing for her life. She needs to prove to herself she is strong and able to defend herself. Living in terror and barely making ends meet, she is still resilient and willing to pick herself up again and again in order to succeed.

All the emotions of falling in love, loving someone deeply, yet feeling inadequate are shared by our characters. Their struggle to improve themselves goes beyond the expected, as our main characters try, fail and continue to fight toward shedding the baggage from the past and to forge ahead with hope.
I should also mention, the love scenes are HOT!
