- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2025I fel like he didn't try to shove any particular diet plan in his book. He only said what he did but most of it he talks about how to break the stronghold addiction itself. I applied this to more than just food in my life. Highly recommend this book if you struggle with any type of food addiction or not sure, this book will help you discover if there is some addiction in your life. Thank you Dr. Michael Brown.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2017I truly believe that this book was a Godsend. I had about 12 -18 pounds that I couldn't get rid of so when I saw one of my favorite Christian author/speakers had written a book on dealing with food battles, I had to read it. WOW!! Talk about eye-opening! I was a sugar addict through and through! This book was my answer in how to deal with it. I also bought, and am in the processing of reading and applying the principles taught therein, the books Dr. Brown and his wife Nancy were guided by; namely, "The End of Dieting" and "Eat to Live" both by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. The biggest changes I saw after adopting this way of eating was I lost weight, I wasn't constantly hungry, my brain started functioning properly, I could think and talk clearly, aches and pains have lessened...... I could go on but back to the book review! I loved and appreciated Nancy's candor. I felt like she was a dear friend not afraid to share her struggles. Dr. Brown really gave enormous encouragement in that if he could do this with his challenging schedule, it can be done! And how they brought everything into the light of Scripture really resonated with me. God does care how we
take care of the temple He's given us and this book will set you on the right dietary path.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2017Dr. Brown's book has changed the stereotypical way I view food. Admittedly, most of us struggle with food addictions. Unfortunately, very few today would consider the over consumption of food as sinful. It's interesting that 2 Timothy 4:8 is often used as a defense of food consumption when the same New Testament Paul of scripture uses physical training in illustrating spiritual truth (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). Paul doesn't suggest we neglect our health he only prioritizes godliness as superior to the physical.
I immerse myself every day in God's word and wouldn't dream of putting exercise before Jesus. I'm a late comer to Christ having been saved only 2 years ago ... I know firsthand what it’s like to not know Him so now that I do I'm not looking back! Not long after Dr. Brown's book was released (Feb 2017) I had an annual physical. The results were shocking! My weight was increasing year after year in seemingly small increments but this time my bad cholesterol was at 244 and it was starting to affect my liver (I don't consume alcohol). I've always been an active person and am no stranger to physical labor. Never the less this made no difference due to some terrible eating habits that gradually led to consuming anything I deemed pleasingly eatable!
"Breaking the Stronghold of Food" has made a profound impact on my personal health. Upon completing the book I decided to make a radical change in my diet. In addition to reading Dr. Brown's book I purchased Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" book and cookbook (which I highly recommend). My follow-up doctor’s appointment is in August 2017 and I'm pleased to say that since March 2017 I've lost 25 lbs. and I feel great! Instead of processed/sugar/fatty foods I've learned (thanks to Dr. Fuhrman) to eat nutrient rich foods. And by the way I lost all 25 lbs. without exercising ... I've since incorporated a workout routine.
Thank you Dr. Brown for writing this amazing book and sharing godly wisdom we all can spiritually and physically grow upon! God bless
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2017As mentioned by other reviewers and by the authors, this book is NOT a book about dieting nor about a particular nutrition plan (although the book does commend Dr. Fuhrman's nutritional plan). This book is not another flash-in-the-pan, quick fix scheme for losing weight. This book is written for those who know that they have a very unhealthy relationship with food (or even a food addiction) and is written towards a Christian audience. The authors encourage Christians to examine their lifestyle and to consider the idea that a general pattern of unhealthy eating may be sinful. This means that unhealthy eating has both a physiological component as well as a spiritual component. Physiologically, this means that we should treat unhealthy eating with the same seriousness as we would treat frequent abuse of smoking or alcohol (since certain foods can be equally as addictive). Spiritually, this means that we should address this with the same tools that we would address other sins and pursue Spirit-empowered self-control. This is major thesis of the book and these points are repeated multiple different times and illustrated with numerous stories from Dr. Brown and his wife. I believe that the book accomplishes its purpose well by exhorting Christians to consider these points and by encouraging Christians to push through various temptations to lapse back into unhealthy eating. I think the most encouraging point of the book is to note that Dr. Brown's testimony who started his journey while in his 60s, illustrating that by God's grace, this type of lifestyle is quite attainable. For those who would like more nutrition guidance, I will complement this book with Fuhrman's book The End of Dieting. I'm giving this a 4 star review because I believe that the book can be too repetitive at times. I think the book could be about 60% of the length and accomplish the same intended purpose.

I thought the authors did a really good job, providing detailed information, examples of success stories, and directions for how to help yourself as well as references for deeper dives. I appreciate the biblical perspective as well.

Amazon CustomerReviewed in Italy on October 29, 20173.0 out of 5 stars Nice book but a bit too repetitive
A really nice book but a bit boring sometimes. I've found it to be a little bit too repetitive for my tastes, I think it could have been written in half the pages and be just as good. I would have also tried to incorporate more biblical linking, since that seems to be the strength of the author and he can provide very useful spiritual insights and teachings.

This book is hard to put down. I like the way that the authors relate to themselves and to me. I understand completely what they’re trying to say. As a Christian I see the stronghold and the pain it causes, so the way they both deal with the addictions to food is very inspiring. I would highly recommend this book.
