This book coves some very sensitive subjects. Domestic violence, verbal abuse and adultery . The author portrayed this in a very delicate way that none of these were the center of the story. She touched slightly, just enough to have the point come across, brilliant! I have sat back for years watching my best friend be verbally abused and couldn't do anything about it. She as did Clarissa, finally formed a plan of escape and did. But he is still in her live with their kids and work and the abuse goes on.
Clarissa is a teen in high school, happy with her 3 friends and life in general. She does a lot of looking back as she tells her story of her life and how she ended up not being able to breathe. Nathaniel is her best friend, the one who knows every inch of her being. Her sounding board, confidant and much, much more. Then there are her girl besties, Ainslie and Cristen, they do the giggling and girl stuff. Clarissa will discover just how much the three of them are really her best friends.
Clarissa is a twin and her sister Alyssa looks just like her, mirror image. The girl's are opposites and alike in many ways. Alyissa likes to challenge Clarissa to do dares. Clarissa falls for it every time. Well one dare was to go and talk to a boy, Theodore. Both girls liked him, but he had eyes for Clarissa. They dated as teens do and one day he just up and left the town. Clarissa was devastated.
Getting over him was hard, but she did and went to college with her 3 friends and was having a great time, or so she thought. Thero showed up one day and she was in love all over again. Nathaniel got a great offer in another school and he left. Their relationship would be changed for ever.
Clarissa marries Theo and she thinks this is what she wants, until he shows his monster side. She doesn't say anything to her family and just goes with it. After a while the verbal abuse wasn't enough and he starts to get physical.
Now in between all this, there is very hot sex with another man, trying to escape and being caught and punished. The author shows you what could really happen in this situation. My heart went out to Clarissa and Nathaniel at times. The ending had me in tears. Tears of fear and tears of joy. I really liked the two extra bonus parts, they warmed my heart.

Thoughts: This was so hard to put down and I can't wait to read the rest of the series! I am really liking the Pierson family! Clarissa for some reason is blind to the one person that is perfect for her and ends up with the wrong guy. She somehow ends up with a guy that wants a servant, not a wife, and finds herself stuck. This story is a roller-coaster ride, you've been warned.
