Editorial Reviews
Review
—Susan Verde, author of I Am Yoga and I Am Peace
“I love this book! Breathe Like a Bear is filled with playful and imaginative ideas for helping kids connect to themselves, whether it’s their own strong energy or inner calm. Each moment that Kira has so elegantly sculpted and described conjures up delicious, beautiful, or whimsical, child-friendly scenarios. It’s exactly this fun and accessible style that will make kids want to try every one of these little gems that provides simple tools for big change.”
—Laurie Berkner, award-winning and bestselling children’s musical artist
Author Willey brings years of experience in children's music and movement to her debut. The book is divided into five sections ("Be Calm," "Focus," "Imagine," "Make Some Energy," and "Relax"), which are further sectioned into double-page-spread subtopics. Each spread includes one or two breath-centered exercises to encourage a habit and practice of mindfulness. Most, but not all, include references to wild animals and nature that are sure to appeal to young children. They are encouraged to use their imaginations as launch pads for being present: "Imagine you're a cloud in the sky" and "Imagine you're a sleepy lion, just waking up in the morning" are typical. The exercises are brief and excellent for short attention spans, though some offer opportunities for extension through pacing. The instructional text is simple enough for fluent readers to use in self-guided practice, though each exercise likely works best as a read-aloud. Betts accompanies each exercise with charming illustrations featuring foxes, elephants, fanciful clouds, and, of course, bears. This friendly book is sure to appeal to educators and caregivers looking for an accessible and kid-friendly introduction to mindfulness. A breath of fresh air. - Kirkus Reviews

1. Each meditation is bite-sized. The brevity makes it seem more do-able to my kids even when they are extremely dysregulated.
2. The illustrations are engaging, inviting, pleasant to look at, colorful.
3. The imagery in each meditation makes it easy for kids to focus on their senses - for example, holding a candle or a cup of hot chocolate.
4. There are enough meditations to choose from that the kids can easily find one they feel like doing in any given moment without it being the same thing every time.
5. Even though I'm the one reading it to them and making them do it, it helps that the instructions are coming from a third party (the book) so that it's not just Boring Mom and Dad telling them what to do.
We have mainly used this book in two ways. One is as a transition from our bedtime routine into getting in bed. We have them turn on their flashlights and sit in bed and we turn off the overhead light. Then we read one or two of the meditations for relaxing and we all do it together. After that we are able to turn off their flashlights and have them lay down for reading time. It sets the tone for bedtime and the kids really love it. The other way we have used the book is when one of the kids is really dysregulated. Our 8yo gets into manic episodes where she laughs hysterically, pushes her sisters, breaks every rule, etc and for the life of me I could not figure out a way to get her out of this mode. The other day when she was in one of these modes, I pulled her aside and had her do a few "be calm" meditations from the book with me and like magic she was a functioning child again. We also used it with our 6yo when she got into a spiraling tantrum where she just got herself into more and more and more trouble and couldn't stop. I told her she could earn back the privileges she had lost if she did a few meditations with me, and she just kept wanting to do more of them even after she had earned it back already. It really helped calm her and turn things around.
I'm sure there are a ton of ways to use this that we haven't taken advantage of yet. But so far just in these two different use cases it's been extremely helpful.
Several sections all with various exercises aimed at focusing and calming a child during duress. While I've read this while my son was calm to introduce him to the ideas and for us to learn and practice then together, I've also used some in the heat of the moment (hot chocolate and tree ones) when I really needed him to calm down because we weren't in a great place to tantrum and melt down over our frustrations. This. Works. I also watch another kid around his age, and while I was doing the hot chocolate one, she really got into it too and helped us all actually. I'm usually a discount book buyer, so I was hesitant on buying this but I'm super glad I did and would gladly buy again for family and friends. I wish this author had another book in a similar vein to this one with just as many excercises.
I have since purchased the book for our home and my son picks one "Mindful Moment" to do each day that pertains to what's going on in his day. He is so happy to get to identify what he needs and make the choice of what he wants to do to "Be calm", "Focus", "Imagine", "Make Some Energy" or "Relax. This has been a great tool for both of us and something that we can keep doing for years to come.
