Katherine Hayton makes much of her sheltered life in Christchurch, New Zealand, where she lives, works in insurance, has no pets, stays close to home and even refers to herself as a "reticent genius" at the end of this book. All that is all right because she writes brilliantly and lyrically, and we are the beneficiaries of here incredible talent. In Breathe & Release, her third novel, the author tales us in the world of a woman suffering from amnesia we are told, which, aa a literature assignment is tough enough to pull off successfully. Toss in the added factor of the story unfolding inside the mind of the patient and the task seems impossible. While she is no Kafka (The Metamorphosis) or Philip Roth (The Breast), the author succeeds splendidly by creating a plot (indeed a world) that will mesmerize you, if not send you clamboring for your shrink. This is a first-rate mystery story where everything that seems real might not be, and every character is evil or isn't. In fact, you won't even be sure there is evil or not until there are no more pages to turn. In a word this is an accomplishment. For the wordsharps, Ms. Hayton dishes up metaphors and similes with enough refreshing garnish to satisfy any gourmet. The writing is the main course, so savor it. But, be warned: this is a plot that does not jump from the starting gate like a thoroughbred. It builds furlong by furlong into a winner. Recommended.

I love to be surprised when I am reading a novel and this is one of the reasons that I enjoy psychological thrillers so much. I don't like to be terrified as much as challenged and tricked a bit and author Katherine Hayton accomplished this and so much more with her " Breathe and Release". The story of two women, Elisabet and Lillian, who are struggling to survive though are unaware of each other and how their lives intersect. There were some incredible twists in this one that I didn't see coming and I loved the resolution to the story. Very well written and engaging from start to finish.

This is one of the most surprising books I've ever read. Our heroine has been injured in an accident and has no memory of her past. Her estranged husband cares for her but becomes horrifyingly abusive. A memory haunts her dreams of a starving woman. What else is in her past. Read one of the best written nail biting stories out there.
