Story Review: Holy Cow Batman! This book was out of this world! I loved it the first time I read it and I loved it the second time I listened to the audible. It had everything I could want in a shifter book. The action was so entertaining and the side characters were just as fascinating as the main characters.
Jillian and her sister have been in hiding for years from her clan. They are dragon shifters and the males have gone insane. Jillian and Lynn are considered the last known breeders. During their time of hiding out, Jillian met and fell in love with a Druid.
The Druid's are not accepting of other races and have always conspired to come between Jillian and Dom, who is expected to become Arch. On top of that, the current Arch is threatened by Dom and will do anything necessary to take him out. Jillian knew she had to do something drastic or the current Arch would have him killed.
Jillian is pretty much everything I love in a kicka$$ heroine. She's practically indestructible and she doesn't put up with anyone's crap. She is one of my favorite heroines! The only thing I didn't like about this book and left me very conflicted was Dom. He is everything I love in a Hero. Dominant, dangerous and possessive. Even though he thinks Jillian betrays him, he never gives up his search for her. His people want her dead and he has demanded that no one hurt her.
Here's what has me so conflicted. Yes, he loves her and he's obsessed with her but he was so blind to what his people were doing to her when they were together. And then when Jillian "betrays" him, he turns so cold. He sleeps with a different women every night just to get back at her and he never really warms back up. I'm hoping the second book will see these two back together and Dom will start protecting Jillian better...even though she truly can protect herself.
This was probably the first good, cheaper book I have read in a long time. Usually, I when i end up giving books a chance, I find myself pretty disappointed. This was not the case for Breathing Fire however.
If you've read my reviews before you know that I have a pet peeve about lack of character development. Well, points for Rebecca Lilley because her characters were not lacking in development in the least. I enjoyed the main character, Jillian. She was sassy, quick with a comeback, and very confident. However, my favorite character was between Lynn (Jillian's sister) and Caleb (A close friend of the two sisters and a literal sociopath). My favorite scene in the book (WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD) was when Lynn punched Siobhan in the face. Priceless, a show of the loyalty between sisters, and although completely unexpected, it was hilarious and a pleasant surprise.
Another thing I loved is how Lynn and Jillian's secret wasn't just revealed. It dragged out (in a good way) until it was necessary to the plot line for it to be know to each character respectively. A mistake a lot of authors make is once they reveal the secret to the reader, the rest of the characters closely follow. Even though the reader knew of the sisters secret from near the very start, the characters don't find out until much later. The fact that their secret was that they were dragon shifters? even better. You don't see a lot of books about dragon shifters, or at least, I don't.
Have I mentioned that Jillian's best friend is a dragon slayer? Yup, the one person, holding the one thing that can kill her and she trains him how to fight. The author reveals this fact at the very beginning of the book or I wouldn't have mentioned it, but boy, did the irony kill me. The fact that he is completely clueless of what his best friend is is astonishing.
With this book, I can talk about a lot of things I loved, but I think it's important to talk about its major flaw. The thing I hated most about the book was the fact that Dom and Jillian couldn't be in a room together alone without a sex scene following. I think there was only one time where they were alone and didn't rip each others clothes off. I can kind of see where the author was coming from in writing the two characters relationship so that, even when they hated each other, they couldn't resist each other kind of thing, but it was definitely to a fault. I just started skipping those scenes after a while, they got old very fast.
So, now for the rating. I would probably rate this book a good 9/10. It wasn't absolutely amazing, but it was very good regardless of its faults. I would have given the book an 8 except that the ending is so shocking and surprising, that I had to boost the rating up. Anyone who reads the book will LOVE it.
What can I say.. just.. Oh Wow!! I read this book in one sitting on Saturday afternoon/evening - didn't even get out to do the grocery shopping! Get some chains and tie this author to her desk - I want the next book NOW!!
The story is well written, robust, action packed, fast paced and, at times, wildly erotic! Jillian is witty, sarcastic, strong and loyal - and also incredibly naive and bitchy at times. The secondary characters are an integral part of the main story line - I love them almost as much as Jillian. Christian is just hilarious, Caleb is creepy wonderful, Lynn is hysterical, Dom is just .. sexy, and lovable, and ever so alpha male. The story rocks from page one and doesn't stop till the end.
There are some really heart-breaking parts too - maybe this is what makes it more human and leaves you with the desire to read the next one. After all, who wants to end a book with so much unfinished business. And there's a lot of loose threads to tie up in the next installment.
So if you're looking for dragons and druids, blood-thirsty axes, kick-butt weapons and secret locations, sex and laughter, enduring love and a darn good story line - pick this up and read it. I promise you won't be disappointed.
So...when's the next one released???
