About the Author

A former researcher and teacher at UCLA, Alon Ziv has spent over four years studying the physical and social aspects of race mixing. His research has encompassed prestigious academic journals such as Science and Nature as well as state constitutions and the US Census. Ziv has written articles for academic journals and has lectured extensively on the biology of interracial people, having been invited to speak by the Biracial Family Network, the HAPA Issues Forum, the Multicultural Resource Center at Penn State, and many other groups in North America. Another perspective

The title of the book "Breeding Between The Lines" intrigued me so I looked online at the publisher's summary and the reviews. The author promotes race as definitive biological distinction. This seems a bit outdated as science proves there isn't much biological difference between apparent "types" of physical characteristics. So I corresponded with the author via email to clarify his position. Yes he does claim that "race mixing" provides distinct biological advantages for physical appearance, health and longevity. Fascinating as an opposing racist position, to the racist philosophy of miscegenation based on constructed and enforced white superiority. Overall it might be useful to find new, less contrversial language for describing humanity.

I bought this book from Amazon about three years ago and it changed my perspective on inter-racial people. Inter-racial to include African Americans, and Hispanics both of which have a considerable amount of admixture in their genetics. I'm reviewing this book now because I just watched a South African colored man in Wayde Van Niekerk win the 400m gold in the 2016 Olympics. Hybrid vigor is a real thing. This book describes the why and how. Looking through a social lens I understand how some people are bothered of these ideas. However I'm not bothered by these ideas, rather I'm excited by them. Genetically speaking this book makes a huge statement that is really difficult to disprove..

Overall, this book presents a strong argument for why interracial children are, on average, healthier, more attractive, etc...There is no guarantee that an interracial child will be beautiful and healthy, but I think that the author's point is that it definitely tilts the odds in favor.

One thing that should be noted is the use of famous mixed race celebrities and public figures as probative examples. The problem here is a form of the statistical concept of "survivorship bias," which is, broadly speaking, the logical error of focusing on the successes and ignoring the failures. In other words, these famous interracial public figures are the ones who made it big, and by focusing on them we ignore the interracial people who maybe weren't the best looking. These people did not "survive" if you will, and hence are not included in the sample data. Basically, we should be careful about pointing to specific people in the public sphere and making conclusions based on that.

But the author's main points are well taken and presented.

Interesting book, really well written and put together. This has to be one of the most underrated books I have read. The author does a nice job using real world example and scientific studies without boring the reader. If you have even a mild interest in genetics, I think you'll find this book interesting and well worth reading. However, I can't help wonder why there is never any mention of Jessica Alba, the best example of interracial beauty that I can come up with.

1. The reading was very light. This book can be read through in about 3-4 hours (especially if you have already studied some biology before). The explanations were very clear and the analogies very apt. (This is not something that is easy to do-- and we all know from reading popular books on biology that said book can and are often overwrought with detail.)

2. The material contained in this book was nothing that we didn't know before (from biology classes-- and lower division ones, at that).

3. I might like to have seen a bit more quantitation on the benefits of being interracial. For example: We all knew that Jews have a lot of genetic defects because of millennia of marrying people that are just a bit too close. But does it mean that there was never a single case of Tay-Sachs in a gentile? Or the child of a Jewish mother and gentile father? He could also have talked at great length about many genetic diseases and the advantages that were conferred when someone was heterozygous for the genes that create said disease. We know this about Tay-Sachs, and we also know it about sickle cell. But are there others?

4. There is at least one point that is FALSE (pp. 134): "Religions that were strict about intermarriage didn't get diluted by other faiths-- they were more successful. Permissive religions were like slow cheetahs-- they die out." This is not quite right. There is no consistent relationship between permissiveness and "dying out." Judaism is very cranky about intermarriage, but there are also very few Jews. Christianity is very open about this, and there are more Christians than any other Abrahamic faith. Islam is much less permissive, but there are nearly as many Muslims as there are Christians. So now what?

5. The author seems to waver on what the definition of a race is. So, we know that Kohanim have certain markers that identify them as Kohanim, but where is the natural stopping point for what a race is?

6. Lastly: I'd like to know what is the survival value of wanting to marry parents that look like you if that is more likely to cause genetic defects. Doesn't it make more sense for organisms to be automatically seeking of maximum diversity? It might have been nice to see about 5 pages devoted to that.

Overall, this book IS worth the time that it takes to read it.

This is a tremendous book and quick read that illustrates the deep natural essence of humanity and how beauty, its standards and the weird unnatural concepts of race move against one another. Throughout, with skillful writing and persuasive argument, Ziv defeats the rigid and artificial notions of race as real idea and shows more how our genetics, humanity and deeper selves evolve from processes so much more fluid and dynamic than our self-identified stupidities. A great read, well-written. A gem.
