"Breezes of Patchouli" achieves what previous Donovan compilation releases have attempted, but failed, to achieve. The 4 cd set here contains 90 tracks, 5 albums released during Donovan's heyday 1966-1969, accompanied by essential related recordings. Previous 2 and 3 cd Donovan compilations have done good jobs of summarizing his recording career, but none have distilled his most revered and respected releases as completely and concisely as "Breezes of Patchouli." This impressive collection opens with the title track from Donovan's breakthrough LP "Sunshine Superman" which not only quickly climbed the Billboard album and single charts in the US, but began the short, yet incredible run of Mickie Most produced classics Donovan released between 1966 and 1969. The track listing is staggering in its depth and breadth, made even more impressive by the short time span involved. The sound quality is excellent, utilizing the remastering versions prepared for the 2005 3cd/1dvd "Try For The Sun: The Journey of Donovan" box set. "Breezes of Patchouli" builds on that foundation and while not representing a career spanning anthology, offers the tracks most familiar to and desired by fans of true "psychedelic" music, Donovan style. The albums on display here are: "Sunshine Superman" (1966); "Mellow Yellow" (1967); "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" (1968); "Barabajagal" (1969); and the double LP "A Gift From A Flower To A Garden" (1968), in that order. Thus the albums are not sequenced in chronological order, at least not in the sense of US release dates, although that is certainly not an issue in my consideration. The hit singles found here are numerous, "Sunshine Superman," "Mellow Yellow," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Wear Your Love Like Heaven," and "Jennifer Juniper" to name but a few.Read more ›

If you don't have any of these albums on CD then this is a good buy. All of these albums have been available for a fewyears and the mastering is the same. The sound on the first cd of the two mono albums is not very good. Bad mastering. If you like the Sunshine Superman album try the more recent stereo remix which blows this away. The stereo tracks sound pretty good to my ears. There is an unreleased bonus track (an Italian language version of "Jennifer Juniper") that is not found anywhere else. So the completists will have to buy this regardless. 5 stars for music 3 stars for execution.

I had to buy this I guess being , one of those "completeness" fans of Donovan. I immediately loaded disc one and my car and drove off somewhat happily down the road. Although I enjoyed the happy memories that the songs brought back it soon became apparent the sound quality was lacking. I enjoyed the song selections and have decided to remake them in stereo to enjoy them again. I'm not one of the people who debate the pro and cons of the stereo versus mono , its just that I enjoy quality recordings albeit remastered mono or stereo as long as it sounds fresh or clear. Unfortunately this collection seems to do neither. No , I'm not some audio snob but just someone without an untrained ear who was very disappointed in the sound quality of this set so far.Overall before you buy this do some research (which I apparently did not do enough)If sound quality is of utmost importance then I recommend purchasing the albums individually which have all been remastered very well. In as much the collection here has some rarities and nice 24 page overview booklet, this collection is an nice effort of an overview of Donovan's career as long as you don't mind the disappointing sound quality.

Sadly this set (with the exception of the better remastered third disc) is a sonic disaster. The bass is blown out and distorted, the high end hurts the ears, etc. It's not uniformly terrible throughout, but you're gonna be disappointed by the songs you know and love. Maybe this box set was remastered to sound okay on iPods and tinny computer speakers, but on a decent home stereo it's a mess.

I did a little research online and it seems the guy who remastered these discs, Peter Mew, has made a career out of ruining a lot of fine music. (The 2013 remaster of the Stranglers' "Old Testament" box set also sounds like a cheap cassette from the 80s thanks to Mr. Mew.) This may be part of EMI's marketing plan - if you really like the music, you'll keep buying the remasters until someone gets it right. But until they do, save yourself some money and don't buy this or anything else Peter Mew has remastered.

Mention the phrase "flower power" and it's hard not to conjure up an image of a paisley-clad Donovan with acoustic guitar in hand sitting cross-legged on a Persian and singing songs of peace and love. From 1966 to 1969, Donovan had eleven Top 40 hits, and they are all included on this 4-disc compilation BREEZES OF PATCHOULI. [The title is taken from a SUNSHINE SUPERMAN outtake that is included on disc-4.]

This collection includes all five of Donovan's studio albums recorded for Epic between 1966 and 1969:

Disc One (Total running time - 78:01)

SUNSHINE SUPERMAN (1966, No. 11)
MELLOW YELLOW (1967, No. 14)

Disc Two (Total running time - 77:39)

THE HURDY GURDY MAN (1968, No. 20)
Also includes the Italian version of "Jennifer Juniper."
BARABAJAGAL (1969, No. 23)
Also includes the outtake "A Poor Man's Sunshine (Nativity)."

Disc Three (Total Running time - 62:05)

A GIFT FROM A FLOWER TO A GARDEN* (1967, No. 19)
*Also released simultaneously as two separate LPs: WEAR YOUR LOVE LIKE HEAVEN and FOR LITTLE ONES.

Disc Four (Total running time - 75:41)

This disc consists of outtakes and earlier/alternate versions.

1. Breezes of Patchuli
2. Museum (first version)
3. Superlungs (first version)
4. The Land of Doesn't Have to Be
5. Sunshine Superman (original longer stereo version. The single was 3:15; this version is 4:44.)
