The removable cover is okay; not super soft but who wouldn't put a nice pillowcase over it anyway? Only time will tell how the cover holds up to regular washing.
---------- 2ND ORDER REVIEW OF BODY & STANDARD PILLOW ----------
December 4, 2015
Order placed 11/21, shipped FedEx Home Delivery 11/25, delivered 12/3. 12 total days from order placement to delivery. I really wish shipping was quicker from west coast to midwest.
The body pillow was purchased for a family member. Upon removing the outer pillowcase (PC) for washing, I noticed a hole in the inner PC. The hole is roughly dime-sized. Please reference the photos. Minus 1 star.
Oddly, the tag on the second body PC is different than the one I received with the first. The first one stated 20" x 54" finished size and the second states 19" x 59". The pillows are absolutely identical in size and measure 17" x 55". Please reference the photos. Also, the tag on the second PC reads “DO NOT WASH, SPOT CLEAN ONLY.” That’s weird because the PC seems to be made from identical materials and my first PC stated “MACHINE WASH COLD, TUMBLE DRY LOW.” I am going to wash them anyway. Minus 1/2 star.
The standard pillow was purchased for traveling. I can put it in one of those big zip-loc bags, squeeze the air out and put it in my suitcase. Who cares if it gets lost or damaged while traveling - at this price, I can just buy another one. The tag on the PC states the finished size is 19" x 25". It actually measures 18" x 23". The only complaint I have about the standard pillow is the foam fill seems to be made from smaller pieces of foam that have firmer/harder edges. The good news is that this is only noticeable when you run your hand over the inner PC and not when your head is resting on it.
Aroma of the memory foam is slightly more powerful than with my first body pillow and is dissipating more slowly. Definitely allow it to air out. Minus 1/2 star.
CONCERN: These pillows are supposed to be free from heavy-metals, formaldehyde and phthalates - let’s hope they are. I am a little skeptical that the foam and inner PC are truly Brentwood Home brand items. There are no tags or markings on any part of this pillow (except for the outer bamboo PC). Also, if you visit the BH website you’ll notice the same pillows selling for 2-4x as much. Maybe, these are genuine BH branded items, however I can’t help but think these are seconds/blems or the seller is filling these with scrap foam from their inventory and just putting a BH bamboo PC on it. I suppose it’s entirely possible that SleepShop is the manufacturer of these pillows. At any rate, something just doesn't add up.
---------- ORIGINAL REVIEW OF BODY PILLOW ----------
November 20, 2015
I went into this purchase a little hesitant due to the extremely low price (most comparable body pillows cost 3-4x as much) and overwhelmingly positive reviews (they just seemed too good to be true).
Figuring I had little to lose (and a lot of money to save), I went ahead and placed my order. I knew to expect delivery within 1-2 weeks after I purchased and that really bummed me out because I am accustomed to receiving items super fast with my Prime membership. Order placed 11/9, shipped FedEx Home Delivery 11/12, delivered 11/19. 10 total days from order placement to delivery - not bad.
Upon opening the pillow, I was surprised at the lack of smell coming from the memory foam. I’ve had a foam mattress and pillow for a little over 1 year and they still give off slightly more odor than this pillow. That's not to say this pillow is completely odor free...you can detect the typical memory foam aroma if your face is within a few inches. I let the pillow air out for 36 hours before first use and no longer detect any aroma (washing the pillow case helps too).
I was really hoping to find a solid (not shredded) foam pillow, but I couldn’t. The shredded foam is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you run your hand over the pillow it feels oddly lumpy and it’s hard to imagine these lumps smoothing out. Don’t worry, they do smooth out and are not noticeable when your head/neck compresses the pillow. This pillow, though soft and easily compressed, does offer plenty of support. It feels much softer than my Comfor Pedic Free Spirit pillow which is a solid piece of foam with holes to allow better air-flow. Those who prefer firm pillows may want to look elsewhere.
It was necessary to gently shake the pillow to evenly distribute the foam pieces. I found the best/easiest way to do this was to place the pillow on my bed, grab the sides of the pillow (along the length) and gently shake. I repeated the process a few times.
Other comparable body pillows are machine washable...this one is not. It does come with a removable washable zippered PC...the others do not. Personally, I’d rather have a removable PC because who wants to wash their whole pillow and wait a day or more for it to dry? Convenience is key and the PC is very easy to remove and easy enough to put on. The sewn-in tag on the PC states the finished size is 20” x 54”. It actually measures 17" x 55". The removeable PC is practically identical to the one that came with my Comfor Pedic Free Spirit pillow. The zipper works well, the stitching is good and it fits the pillow perfectly.
The only improvement I would like to see is a more durable/heavy duty inner PC (the one that contains the shredded foam and you can’t remove). This inner PC is very thin and see-through. I just hope the inner PC is tough enough to last as long as the rest of the pillow.
I’m extremely happy with my purchase and have already placed a second order for a standard pillow to use while traveling and a body pillow for a family member.
Smell -- There was a slight smell when it arrived, and it hasn't quite come out, but it's not bothersome at all. It has that "new smell" to it, which I kind of like. I'm always reminded that I'm sleeping on a new pillow.
Materials -- Memory gel foam was new to me, but it's more comfortable than latex or even a down pillow because it molds to my head/upper back and shoulders to some extent. It does bounce back, though. The bamboo cover is nice enough that I haven't put a pillowcase on it, but I likely will soon.
Heat factor -- It does run a little warm for me. I like cool/cool pillows, but again, if I put a cotton pillowcase on it, this mild problem would be solved, but it isn't so warm that I suffer or wake up; it just makes me keep flipping it from one side to another.
Overall -- It's a good pillow to fall asleep on. I'm a restless (and light) sleeper, and it keeps the kinks out of my neck and is soft to sleep on but still firm enough to keep my head and shoulders up some distance from the mattress. Last week, when I first got it, I would have given it a 3. I've broken it in over the past week far enough to give it a 4 rating. Hope this helps.
UPDATE: A few months later, it's still holding up very well. I love this pillow and am changing my 4 stars to a 5. Really love it. I use it every night, and I'm not easy on pillows, but it maintains its shape if I just punch it up a bit, which is no trouble, and I'd do that to any pillow. It's very cuddly and snuggable.
