1. Very little prep work needed for the veggies. Peel the citrus fruits but leave them whole. The chute is large and can accommodate an average size orange or medium apple.
2. Takes a little experience before getting the best results. The first time I tried it, I, too, had stuff fly out of the chute and onto the wall. I also had the whole assembly leak at the base. It took a couple of tries to make sure I had the whole assembly properly seated due to my own user error. It was actually a very simple assembly but I just needed a couple of tries. Now, I have juiced my brains out and had no splatter or leakage.
3. Yes, the pulp is a little soggy. I put the pulp back through to get the additional juice out of it and it was still soggy so I gave up that effort. It didn't really matter all that much to me. I have not seen any large chunks of veggies in the pulp basket.
4. I took the advice of other reviewers and put a hard fruit or veggie in first, then packed in my kale and spinach then put another hard fruit on top. My best results were when I put the hard fruit on the bottom, packed the greens in mixed with a juicy fruit like a little pineapple, orange, tomato or lemon, then put a hard carrot or celery on top. I got the most juice with the least pulp using that technique. I started on a high speed and then lowered the speed when it came time for the greens and soft fruit, then back to high for the carrot, apple or celery. Excellent results that way and drier pulp but still not super dry like some people report.
5. I added avocado and spices and my juices are very delicious and creamy.
6. Clean up was a breeze. I did not bother to wash in the dishwasher as there are only 7 pieces to wash off. There's the pulp container, the beaker and top, the basket and metal grinder, the top and the pusher. If you put a bag in the pulp container it stays clean and no need to wash it off. It takes less than 3 minutes to wash the whole thing.
7. If you are wondering about time commitment which was a big issue for me, I purchased all my veggies and fruits on Friday night. The cost for the week was $120.00. (2 people juicing) Fruit & veggie prep took about 1/2 hour. Peeled oranges and lemons and washed greens. Chopped long celery, carrots & cucumbers in half but did not peel them. I put each veggie or fruit in it's own Tupperware or Ziplock bag so that I would have an assembly line set up the following morning for juicing. Original machine prep took 5 minutes to wash the 7 removable items and reassemble. Very simple assembly. (thought I didn't have it exactly lined up right the very first time..LOL) Now it takes less than a minute to reassemble since I know what I am doing. So, once you have the fruit and veggies ready, you can prepare enough juice for 2 people for 3 days in about 1/2 to 45 minutes. I find that to be pretty efficient from a time standpoint. Certainly a lot less time than fixing dinner every night.
8. I also did not find this unit to be loud at all. It's darned quiet compared to my Vitamix blender!!!
9. Oh!! And I also mix wheat grass in with my greens when I juice. I don't know how much of the wheat grass just gets tossed in with the pulp but I'm putting it in the mix and hoping for the best!!!
Physically, I am so excited!!! I felt better 2 days after beginning my juice fast. Now I have more energy than I have had in years and have not had one bit of trouble with my IBS. I hope to entirely heal my digestive tract in the next 60 days through juicing and giving my intestines a rest from having to digest solid foods. I don't know if down the road I will want to get a more expensive masticating juicer just to get a little bit of extra juice from my fruits and veggies. This unit seems to get plenty of juice out of $120.00 worth of veggies. It's enough for 2 people for an entire week. I can't compare it to a masticating juicer because I haven't tried one but I can say I love this one. The only reason I gave it the 4 stars is because of the pulp not being as dry as some people said it would be. This is really more of a 5 star product for a person like me who doesn't care about stuff like that but I figured to give a realistic review, this was the only drawback that I could tell for other more serious juicers.

It comes with a plastic cleaning brush, a waste jug and a one-liter juice jug. It isn't a quiet machine when working but is acceptable. Per the manual, all parts all dishwasher-safe, but they will last longer if you wash them by hand and carefully.
Très satisfaite du produit et de la livraison très très rapide.
Merci!
The main con pertaining to this Breville juicer is juice splatters up through the seam between the clear top plastic part and the smoke coloured plastic lower part. I have to cover this seam with paper towels or a washcloth every time. Otherwise I'm wiping the juice from the kitchen floor, counter, and wall. I've read other reviewers with the same problem so Breville must know about it, and I guess, instead of adding a gasket in between, they ignore this. Hence the 3 star rating.
Assembly & Dismantling: Easy (1 min) each
Juicing: high yield on many fruits and vegetables but not leafy greens (kale, spinach, parsley, etc) but that's with all centrifugal juicers. However, pulp is very wet, meaning not getting as much juice yield. (I've read masticating juicers typically get 20% more juice yield for the same amount of produce. Masticating juicers discard a much drier pulp). This juicer is also loud, on either of it's 2 speeds. I can't juice early in the morning for fear of waking up family members.
Clean up: Easy; usually takes 6 +/- 1 minute to hand wash the parts. I always wash the juicer parts right after juicing (before I drink the juice). Don't let the screen dry without washing it. It is a very fine screen that you don't want the fruit/veggie remnants drying and clogging the screen. Always clean promptly (or leave it fully immersed in water until you can clean it). Always use the stiff brush provided.
Tip: Line the discharge collector with a thin plastic bag (i.e. produce bag) to make the clean up a breeze. Compost the pulp, or use it in soups, baking, if you so desire.
Tip: Before juicing apples remove the seeds. Within the hard coating there is a small amount of cyanide in apple seeds. Not enough to cause harmful toxicity in humans but it doesn't take long to remove them. Can also wash the apples in a mix of 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of baking soda in a sink full of water; then scrub the apples to remove the wax and any pesticides before eating or juicing.
Tip: A half or full lemon is great in green juices. Removes the "green" taste of juices and provides alkalinity in the body.
Sidebar:
Although satisfied with this juicer, I am now looking to buy a vertical masticating juicer given that I am now a regular juicer. My reasons:
1. greater yield, especially leafy greens (I figure in time, the produce savings will eventually pay for the juicer)
2. less oxidation with the low speed masticating juicers so juices can be stored up to 72 hours without nutritional degradation (meaning I won't have to juice daily)
3. quieter operation (I can juice without fear of waking anyone)
4. smaller footprint (takes less space on the counter)
Downside to mastciating juicers:
a. longer prep time cutting veggies, especially stringy veggies (celery)
b. takes longer to juice since the operation is slower
c. price - 2-3x the cost of this Breville centrifugal juicer
------------------------
It's been 2 months since I owned the juicer, and now I can evaluate it more accurately. Generaly, it's a great juicer which does the juicing job perfectly.
But, I have to take off 1 star (actually I would have taken off only 1/2 star if possible) for the following shortcomings:
1) the lid on the juice container does not lock at all, and when you pour the juice it falls off spilling the liquid all over the place - found out the hard way! From then on I transfer the juice immediately to a jar with a tight lid - but that means having on hand an extra container and more washing. Breville fix that in the future models, please!
2) washing parts in a dishwasher is confusing because some parts can only be washed by hand. But, which part is which? Yeah, there is narrative about it somewhere in the manual but who has the patience to read the manual each time one wants to clean the juicer? I wish there was some indication on the part itself if it's save to wash it in a dishwasher or not.
----
Just by accident, I watched the documentary "Fat, sick and nearly dead" (available on YouTube), and on the spur of the moment I decided to give juicing a try.
My Breville JE98XL arrived within 2 days of placing the order (amazon.ca - you are really amazing). Today, I made my first ever juice. I was not prepared, neither I followed any kind of recipe. I took whatever I had in the fridge: 2 tomatoes, 1/2 English cucumber, 1 carrot, 1 parsnip, 4 stalks of celery, 1 apple & a chunk of celery root (celeriac). Nothing else - no salt, no sugar, no other spices. I got 2 cups of delicious juice.
Now, granted I had my juicer for only few days, so I'll see how it performs in the long run but so far I'm very impressed. The juicer is small, so it fits my tiny kitchen and a perpetual lack of the counter space. It is fast and quiet. The pulp was dry, the juice plentiful. The operating instruction could not be simpler - one switch going three ways - up for slow speed, middle for off, down for high speed. No confusing settings or digital anything. The cleaning is relatively painless - well, if you own a blender or a kitchen machine you know the routine. Some parts can be washed in a dishwasher (did not try).
One piece of advice: if you juice tomatoes (and I presume that goes for any soft veggie/fruit), turn the machine off, place the tomatoes in the chute, cover with plunger, then turn the machine on. I made a mistake of placing tomatoes while the machine was running, and ended up with a bit of a splatter on the wall!
