The first waffle was perfect and delicious. The second was a little lighter so I turned up the darkness. Tried again and next was even lighter. Turned all the way up and still no darker. I waited each time until it indicated it was ready but I had no luck duplicating the first waffle. Another strike against it was that the overflow is a little plastic thing that attaches to the back. Cleaning the plastic wasn't difficult but there was still residual on the waffle maker that need cleaning and that was more difficult. It also recommends using a cooking spray which makes clean up harder because that burns on to the plates. I hate cleaning the waffle iron so coupled with cooking problems back to WS this went to exchange for the Breville.
The Breville does not recommend anything on the plates. First waffle was perfect. Next test, second waffle, still perfect. Every waffle came out perfect. This one does take longer to cook the waffles but there is no wait between pouring the next waffle in the maker so you can pour immediately. So, less up and down from the table if you're feeding multiple people. The best part of this one is the overflow "moat" around the outside. Not only does it catch any excess but it cooks it also so it comes right out with the waffle. Clean up is a breeze since nothing is left behind. I still don't love the looks of the Breville but the operation and clean up make it a clear choice for us.
Wanting to pick up something locally, I started checking around to see what was available and found that Breville had come out with this waffle maker that I'd missed during my research. There is no comparison in build quality between this and the Calphalon. It's obvious that someone put a lot of care and thought into designing the Breville. Of course this one costs a bit more (it's much cheaper through Wms-Sonoma) but the difference in quality was the deciding factor for us.
I've had it for one week and have used it multiple times each day, both for cornbread and for waffles. These are my observations:
The non-stick surface is actually non-stick and we've not needed to use any oil (the instruction booklet warns not to use oil sprays, as they will wreck the finish, in case you're not into reading instructions). I'm using a pair of chopsticks and/or bamboo toast tongs to pick up the waffles when they're done.
A video reviewer noted that the lid cannot be fully opened underneath a cabinet. We've found this to be true as well, however I prefer to open the lid side-ways so that my arm is never extended across the hot waffle maker. The side-ways position fits nicely on my counter, allowing the lid to open completely (I have a standard 1970's galley-type kitchen).
The unit does have a latch to keep it closed during storage. It also fits on the counter, under overhead cabinets, when standing on-end in the storage position. The cord has a place to be wrapped/contained underneath the unit. Personally, I'm keeping it on the counter so that I'll be more apt to use it. The unit is heavy, and pulling it out might discourage me from making cornbread at a moments notice. The men in our household can't seem to get enough cornbread!
The manual contains a url to a recipe book. I started with their recipe for a corn waffle and then ventured on to using my grandmother's cornbread recipe. The thing I like best is not having to check for doneness. Once you know how you like your waffles/cornbread, choose that setting and the waffle maker will make them exactly the same every time. It adjusts the cooking time, so it doesn't matter if you've just made 6 waffles, the 7th will come out just the same and you only have to listen for the beep. If someone likes their cornbread a little crispier, press the "Bit More" button. All of ours have been uniformly brown -- perfect top and bottom.
The spill-over mote works as advertised, and cooks the spillage too. I actually tried to get spill-over and was disappointed with my efforts. Then accidentally had a large spill-over and the mote caught it all. Probably sounded odd to be so excited, "I've got spill-over! I've got spill-over!"
Conclusion: Using this waffle maker couldn't be any easier or more satisfying. Best waffles, ever! No sticking. No mess. Cornbread isn't quite as good as using an oiled cast-iron skillet, but it is very good -- and ready in 5 minutes! Can't wait to try hash browns.
