I've been using Brew Rite for years, and there was a time when it was hard to find: I'm really glad to see Amazon has it now.

Brew Rite is very simple: it's a chemical, Na2CO3, used in the manufacture of glass so you should follow some basic safety when using it. Do not breathe its dust and wash any of the powder from your skin as soon as possible. Keep it out of your eyes (thanks to Amazon customer doctor__don for this information). Time and again I am amazed at how well it flushes out my coffee maker--I even use it to clean the equipment, too.

Brew Rite is easy to use: you put water in your coffee maker, spoon in one tablespoon per 4 cups of water, then run it through the maker as if you were brewing a pot of coffee (if you have a charcoal filter like my Braun does, I'd suggest taking that out first). Brew Rite washes through your coffee maker and picks up all the built-up gunk that accumulates inside--it's a bit alarming, all that you see coming out into the pot. From there, you just have to flush the coffee-maker clean by running three more pots of fresh water through. I take that initial pot of cleaner-and-water, swish things like the pot lid in it, and use it to wipe out coffee mugs that have stubborn stains in them. Just like the coffee maker, a thorough rinse leaves everything super-clean: my glass coffee pot practically glows.

I make coffee at home about 2-3 times a week, so I only have to use this cleaner once every 6 months or even longer. The jar you see pictured here is good for about 3 full-pot cleanings, so for me that's at least a year and a half's supply.

Even if you use the vinegar-and-water method, you should give Brew-Rite a try. It's safe, it doesn't affect the taste, and it will surprise you how much you didn't know built up in your coffee maker.

If any house is a good testing grounds for a coffee pot cleaner it is mine. I brew at least 40 cups a day, and I love this product! It is certain to extend the life of your coffee pot, It doesn't stink up my house like my former coffee pot cleaner did, which is a definite bonus when you have parrots like I do who are really sensitive to strong smells.

Brew Rite Cleaner is the best coffee maker cleaner on the market. The product label says that this cleaner contains sodium carbonate. According to the official MSDS for this product, it contains only 50% sodium carbonate and smaller amounts of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium perborate tetrahydrate. All are considered "Hazardous Components", so be sure not to inhale the dust or be sure to wash your skin if you get the powder on it. The instructions say to use one tablespoon of Brew Rite Cleaner thoroughly dissolved in four cups of water. That is fine for full size coffee makers. But I have the Hamilton Beach Personal Cup Stay or Go POD Brewer - 49993 Hamilton Beach Personal Cup Stay or Go POD Brewer - 49993. Since this model brews only one cup of coffee at a time, you have to reduce the amount of Brew Rite Cleaner used down to 3/4 teaspoons per one 8 ounce cup of water. When using the cleaner, it is best to run the coffee brewer with the cleaning solution only HALF WAY then unplug the brewer and wait one hour. Then plug your brewer back in and finish the brew cycle. After cleaning, you MUST run three additional WATER ONLY brew cycles to thoroughly flush the cleaner out of the brewer. Most coffee maker instruction manuals say to clean your brewer with a 50/50 vinegar/water solution about once every 3 months. DON"T USE VINEGAR! It leaves a very unpleasant aftertaste even after flushing the brewer with three water only cycles. I hope that this information has helped you. I would highly recommend Brew Rite Cleaner over all the other brand coffee cleaners on the market. It's the absolute best coffee cleaner made. PRICE NOTE: If you want to save some money, buy Brew Rite Cleaner at Wal Mart where it sells for only $4.98 which is 1/3 the price that Amazon sells it for.

Never seen anything clean as well as this. Coffee tasted amazing after using BrewRite, or maybe that's just the leftover chemicals talking!

Make sure you follow the instruction and run a few cycles to clean out...

I found an old coffee carafe at my office that was black and disgusting on the inside. It probably had a little coffee sitting in it for the past 2 years. I couldn't clean it because I couldn't get my hand inside. I tried vinegar which got some of the gunk loose, but I still couldn't get it out. I bought this stuff and used it and now it is sparkling stainless steel on the inside. It was the most incredible thing I have ever seen. I did have to run it through 5 times, but the carafe looks brand new.

Just wanted to point out that while it cleans the coffee maker very well, it also does a fantastic job of cleaning the stains on the inside of the carafe, which can build up quite a bit in a thermal one.

After it runs through your coffee maker, grab a brush and clean the inside of the carafe with the spent solution. Works wonders.

And as someone else pointed out in another review, this is one of those instances where it is much cheaper to buy at your local Walmart or Target.
