Struggled to get through it

As a craft beer lover, I badly wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, I think I was pulled in by the fancy page layout (which is superb, by the way). What I actually got was a badly organized book with frequent sidebars and interruptions. I barely got through the whole thing. While the narrative part of the book wasn't bad, the problem was the "10 to try" and case studies that only serve to destroy the flow of the book. If you take out these sections, you are left with more of a pamphlet, which would have been more enjoyable to read. For whatever reason, it just isn't fun to read tasting notes of 100's beers you've never heard of; how many times can you hear about random beers' "hop profile" or "grapefruit qualities." No, if you really want to get to know these beers, it is better to just try them (don't read a book about them). I guess at times, I felt like I was reading a long series of ads for craft beers; I can't think of one "profiled" beer that I even remember from the book. The tasting notes just seemed to run together after a while. It was interesting to learn the history of Lazy Magnolia though (had no idea their brewer was a woman; very cool).

If you want to learn about beer, a much better book is Tasting Beer by Mosher. In that book, you'll get more in-depth knowledge. This one is high on flash, and low on substance.

I'd been tipped off to this book from a few beer cognoscienti and pub owners here in NYC and am glad I got in on the ground-floor of its release.

It's well-thought out and written, highlighting the stars and best talent of the craft-beer industry today. I consider myself to be somewhat of a connoisseur and I totally agree with the author's picks of the beers to try in each category. Pretty awesome the way the outside cover folds out to reveal a poster of the best of the best!

To boot it's well art-directed and a pleasure to read. You'll tear through it in one weekend (like I did). 5 stars!

Micro-brewing is exploding across the country, and Bernstein educates the reader on everything that goes into brewing that gives beers such different tastes. He also adds personal anecdotes which I found highly entertaining. This was a lot of fun to read!
