"Brian Boru - Freedom Within the Heart" is the story of Ireland in turmoil at the end of the 10th Century. As the clans were fighting amongst themselves, this made the land ripe for invasion and this is exactly what happened. The Vikings tore through Ireland in 952 A.D. and Brian Boru lost both of his parents in the process. Brian and his brother, Mahoun, swore revenge and battled for many years to free Ireland from Viking occupation and rule. There are quite a few great battles depicted here, including the final battle at Clontarf that ended in his demise.
This was a wonderfully exciting work of historical fiction that brought to life a real live hero of the Irish people. I loved the depiction of Brian Boru in this tale that really gave me a new appreciation for this time in history and I found the writing to be very well done. Would definitely recommend this one to any adult or teen who is interested in this subject or who is just looking for a great tale of adventure.
If you’re looking for a piece of Irish history that entertains and inspires, then this is the book for you.
I am a person who always wants to read the book before the movie. I always find the book to be way more descriptive. I like to look for details I remember from the book too.
The hero of this book is Brian Boru. Who was born in 941 AD. He was a Irish king who ended the dominantion of the High Kingship of Ireland by the Ui Neill.
As a Irish woman who still has relatives in Ireland. I am very embarrassed to have not known about this man!
Brian Boru fought hard for his countrymen! Such strength and perseverance is so admirable. There has been stories and plays about this man as early as 1888! I suggest reading this book and doing some research! This is such a interesting story!!
Great storytelling, nice choice of words, great structure over-all gives this novel by Mark Mahon an advantage over other of this genre. This was told in a way you'll never connect to a country's history. The details, description, action sequences was told in a simple yet picturesque manner. Th plot, was a unique combination of revenge, war, conquest, treachery and love. Brian Boru is one great hero, in the eyes of the people and in the eyes of his love. For those looking for an epic novel with action, romance, war and plot twists, don'y look far, Freedom within the Heart will satisfy you in all this. Great, great novel.
I hope the film, which has been in development for sometime, will be produced soon.
