"A true gem! Infuriating, suspenseful, & thankfully satisfying when all was said & done! My heart went out to Emmeline & Hunter, both undeserving of the betrayal from those who owed it to them most. "- TP, Amazon review
"What makes this story different is the author's ability to portray the feelings of the jilted lovers. it does explore the agony of those who are disappointed in love, and who are forced to reinvent their choices in life whether they want to or not. Revising those choices leads the way out of the swamp of misery, but it takes a lot of courage and self analysis to move beyond the original event."- George Hancocks, Amazon review
"Can two hearts injured by betrayal find a way to heal and find true love? The insecurities and struggle will have you wanting to shake someone while they try to figure it all out. Then you find yourself smiling."- M2, Amazon review
"A most delightful read, twists and turns, evil characters to offset the delightfully honest and sincere characters, enough twists and turns to get your reading satisfaction."- Dilu, Amazon review

The woman, is betrayed by her best friend, Clara, who marries the man Emmaline has been expecting to marry her since childhood. The man, Hunter Bentley, the Earl of Addison, is betrayed by his fiancee. When he is away tending to his dying father for six months, she marries another without warning. Bridget Barton writes a tale with sympathy and understanding of the toils broken couples can go through, even before marriage.
The jilted pair first come together at what was supposed to be Emmaline's engagement party, but where she is cruelly put aside by her fiancee's father when he announces his son's marriage to Emmaline's best friend. The two jilted lovers commiserate, and eventually Emmaline agrees to a marriage of convenience with Hunter.
What makes this story different is the author's ability to portray the feelings of the jilted lovers.
Emmaline is not only jilted in public, but suffers through a period of social ostracism, all the while knowing that she, her mother and her sister may soon become impoverished because of the rules of succession in her father's will. No male heir. She has no idea how and when her fiancee may have met up with her best friend Clara, but the betrayal rocks her world and leads to a period of soul searching that is painful in the extreme.
Hunter, on the other hand, is betrayed when his fiancee marries another man while he is away for six months, and the shock of it leaves him bitter and depressed. He also needs a male heir for his estate, but becomes determined never again to marry for love. A "convenient" marriage with someone who shares his pain will be sufficient.
This book reveals not only how archaic marriage laws were at the time, but also goes into some detail to explain the psychology of those whose family plans are destroyed by the acts of others before a marriage is even consummated. In real life, I have been witness to a marriage broken at the altar--a shocking event, especially when the bridegroom is the son of a minister. I know from firsthand experience what can happen in such a circumstance because I was the best man. In some respects, no event in life is more terrible, except for sudden death. And at the time, even death might seem preferable.
This is a well written book which eventually has a happy ending. But it does explore the agony of those who are disappointed in love, and who are forced to reinvent their choices in life whether they want to or not. Revising those choices leads the way out of the swamp of misery, but it takes a lot of courage and self analysis to move beyond the original event, and there is often no one to help.
Meanwhile, Hunter's hopefully beloved, Felicity💃, the only daughter of an Earl, has probably found another, because her letters to him while he's away, drop off to nothing.
With great sadness, Hunter🐺 makes the long trip back to Addison Hall, where he is now the Earl, no longer the son of an Earl. He has barely walked in the door, when his cousin tells him Felicity💃 has dumped him and has married a Duke. That SUCKS!
Emmeline💃💋 has lost her father in the meantime, too, and her three months of mourning are up. She can once again go out and enjoy society. But in six months, her home will become the property of an uncaring male cousin, since her father left no male heirs.
She hopes to be married👰 by then to Christopher Lennox, a wealthy young man, even though He has not asked her! Invited to a party at the Lennox estate, she is horrified when Christopher's father announces his son's betrothal to Emmeline's best friend, Clara. Talk about embarrassing and humiliating and cruel! EGAD!
Hunter🐺 is at The party too, a tall, dark, brooding figure. He decides then and there, that he will ask Emmeline💃💋 to marry him in a marriage👰 of convenience. At thirty-two He needs a wife👰 and heir, and she needs to save her mother and sister from poverty. Will this even work?
Loved the premise of this book📑! It is so interesting in the beginning, that I kept on reading until The end!
A Bride for the Betrayed Earl by Bridget Barton is an intimate peek into the so-called civilized world of nineteenth century British society. Ms. Barton descriptively peels back the refined veneer to expose the cruelty, vanity and insecurity of the rich and influential. It is only with such a backdrop that the true goodness and warmth of Hunter and Emmeline can be appreciated and admired.
There is much to recommend about this interesting stand-alone novel. It is a sweet and clean tale that is suitable for any age reader. There is also a bit angst and action which provides some balance. It is also well written and edited, but it is by no means a short or quick read. There is a lot of description and internal musings to digest, as well as in depth dialogue between characters.
All in all, this is a solid 4.0 read.

I enjoyed reading about Emmeline and Hunter who were betrayed by the people they were going to marry. They were both devastated at losing the love of their life but after deciding to have a marriage of convenience they found love when they least expected it. There was a lot of emotion, some danger and a good amount of romance in this story. I liked how sensible the two main characters were by deciding to make the most of their situation. I also liked Emmeline's sister Rose and how strong and loving their relationship was. Hunter's friend Algernon was also a great character and a very supportive friend.
I gave it 4.5 stars because I would have liked Emmeline to be a bit more feisty and for both of them to have a little bit of revenge on Kent and Felicity! However as i enjoyed the story I recommend this book and will definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

Good enough premise. My main problems where to do with Barton seemingly trying too hard to fit in with her view of the time period - aping others and failing. The forced familiarity whilst using formal language and overuse phrases such as "my dear fellow" between the main characters and their relatives was grating. It didn't seem like they were related at all. The character's thoughts of how close they were with certain people did not equate to how they spoke to each other when not in company. To me, it left the characters feeling flat and without real personality. The development of Emmaline and Hunter's feelings also seemed a little... simple? Boring? Just not right. Really very clean (which I know some people like), but with not even the singlist hint of passion at all.
Bland and underwhelming pretty much sum up my thoughts on this one very succinctly.

Weeks later, Emmeline Fitzgerald suffers the worst humiliation of her life. Soon after the death of her father, the man she was to marry publicly announces his engagement to another. Feeling all eyes on her, Emmeline almost turns to run, but her dignity is saved by none other than Hunter. Within days the Earl, a man she barely knows, makes her a most unusual proposal; a marriage of convenience.
Another well written page turning book from the author. Both Hunter & Emmeline are both betrayed by the people they thought they would marry and, in Emmeline's case, betrayed by a really close friend as well. So they decide to embark on a marriage of convenience but fall in love with each other but don’t admit their feelings for each other. The two main characters are well portrayed and I felt that I almost knew them by the end of the book, the secondary characters namely Emmeline's mother and sister and Hunter’s cousin all add to the story. The villains I feel should have suffered more. My only slight annoyance was the name Hunter which didn’t sit well with me as an English name. I do really enjoy the author’s books & highly recommend them

By the end of the book I felt I knew the characters personally and with books like this I hate finishing the story. I just want it to continue for the rest of their lives.
I hope the author includes them in future books so that we can see how their lives developed.
Great story
