Kate's father, who was Gil's direct boss, died on the cattle round-up. Kate need's some to help run the small ranch she and her father. She asks Gil to marry or allow her to be his common law wife. She keeps telling him she won't nag or cause him any grief. Gil decides to have sex with her, determines they are compatible so accept's her offer.
Gil's opinion of Kate's looks.
"Kate was in her early twenties, unmarried. She’d privately asked if I’d come by later and help her with some things. A big girl, she wasn’t any beauty queen, but she had pretty, brown, shoulder-length hair. Her eyes were too small, and her mouth looked the same—too small."
What is Kate's opinion of Gil's looks?
Does she find him studly or know's he is fair man who won't steal her paid-off ranch?
"Standing on the round rag rug on the floor, I was tired, drained out. But I also felt amazed how neat she turned out to be as a lover. I’d figured this mating business was going to be charity work on my part, but instead it turned out to be neater than a dream. Dad would have said, “Ya gotcha a round one, boy.”"
