A story about Ellie Mason, who lives life on a cattle ranch and is suddenly orphaned when her beloved father passes away leaving her with a formerly certain future completely uncertain. And when Jake, the primary ranch hand proposes they marry until she hits 18 and can take over all responsibilities, Ellie goes along with it even though she wishes she didn't have to be this selfish.
And that is what I adored most: both Ellie and Jake have good heads on their shoulders and couldn't be more selfless if they tried. At 17, Ellie is both wise beyond her years and yet is still very naive when it comes to the world of love. I welcomed her inner thoughts and found myself both chuckling and cringing when things between her and Jake become awkward. Jake is the perfect counterpart and as he tries his hardest to be all things to Ellie, including father, teacher and pseudo-husband, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that these two will eventually find the other more than just good friends.
The Bride begins a journey that is bittersweet but also hopeful. I feel the angst that both Ellie and Jake have to endure but can't help but hope they find a way to each other when they are trying so desperately not to fall for the other. The description of the tough life of a cattle rancher is an added bonus and I more than appreciated that aspect of Jake and Ellie's life. Hearing their alternating POV's really made the story that much more engaging and it gave great perspective to what both were now going through.
I truly look forward to more and am grateful to have had the chance to find a new author to me who knocked this gem out of the park.
A solid 5 stars!!
Loved the story...the characters...the setting...everything!
Little by little, S. Doyle lets the reader see how this life change affects Ellie and Jake. And I DEVOURED this book and could not put it down. Life is a little different on a ranch and I wanted something to happen with them; I wanted there to be feelings between them. I loved how Ms. Doyle sinks her words into you and brings the reader closer to the characters. Ellie and Jake make sense and I wanted them to see that. Looking forward to the continuation of their story in The Wife!
Ellie's dad has just passed and she is now left with no one since her mom passed a few years ago.
Issue #1 - she is not quite 17 years old.
Issue #2 - she has three (3) options--an aunt in Florida which is really not an option, a foster home 3 hours away, or ... *gasp* marriage.
Jake has worked for the Mason family for years. His dad was best friends with Ellie's dad, was a father figure to Jake as well. Jake has decided to step up and be there for Ellie.
Issue #3 - Jake & Ellie get married!
They both agree to the arrangement with the agreement they would divorce when she turned 18. Sixteen months does not seem like a long time unless you are in the same house and living together and getting closer ... right?
Issue #4 - Did I mention that Jake has a girlfriend?
This story worked through the varying stages of grief one as young as Ellie goes thru with real honesty. It also shows the hormones of teenager and how the every day stress of living in the same house and working together can either draw people together or tear them apart.
I am really looking forward to finding out what happens next, because Ellie & Jake's story has all the makings of an epic Love Story.
