Henry Hoffman is a former public library director and newspaper editor whose fiction and non-fiction works have appeared in a variety of literary and trade publication. He is the author of three previous novels, Bound, Drums Along the Jacks Fork, and Flaherty's Run. Along with his works of fiction, he has contributed articles to a number of standard reference works, including America: History and Life (ABC-CLIO), the Encyclopedia of Flight (Salem Press), Historical Abstracts of the United States (ABC-CLIO), and the Encyclopedia of Natural Disasters (Salem Press).

Henry Hoffman is a former newspaper editor and public library director whose works have appeared in a variety of literary and trade publications, including the Library Journal, America: History and Life, the Cyclopedia of Literary Places, and the Encyclopedia of Natural Disasters. He is the author of eight novels, including Bridge to Oblivion, The Veiled Lagoon, On a Midnight Clear, and The Ephemeral File, the first four entries in the Adam Fraley Mystery Series. He is a past recipient of the Florida Publishers Association's Gold Medal Award for Florida Fiction.

Tampa Mystery Sunshine Skyway Bridge

On May 9, 1980 I woke up to hear the news of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge disaster. People in cars, a truck and one bus had been flung off the edge of the broken bridge. Did I want to read a fictional mystery about this day? I had driven the Skyway Bridge many times that year, and this was an event almost too horrible to believe. Henry Hoffman changed my mind in his well conceived and compelling mystery; Bridge to Oblivion. Mr. Hoffman uses his journalism training, his research skills and his love of Shakespeare to write a clever plot that leaves me wanting more of the story. I'm hoping for a sequel. After reading I realize that the idea of a mystery around the Bridge disaster brings me closer to the acceptance of the horrors in life, so I praise Hoffman for tackling this tough topic. Mr. Hoffman's descriptions conjure up the sensuality of Tampa describing the memorable scents of a fine Cuban cigar, frangipani and a salt water breeze. Further delineating the sense of place Hoffman has referential remarks about Ybor City, Rocky Point, Clearwater Shopping Malls, Gasparilla, Bayshore Boulevard and Tampa Bay. In a nod to library research, Hoffman has the main character; Adam "make a quick trip to the Library to dig up a photo." A hint of Hoffman's knowledge of Catholic teaching are subtly and wonderfully incorporated into the philosophy of Gary Merkel, the lead investigative reporter for the Beacon, who wonders if the concept of "sins of commission and sins of omissions," would be helpful in solving the case. Adam, the spunky main character is learning to be a "cracker jack" (my words) private investigator and considers this insight. Hoffman describes the process of investigating a tough case with political dangers, bringing readers into the process as we learn to unwrap the layers of the case right along with Adam. I find this to be an appealing way to construct the story. Applause goes to Hoffman for this best novel yet, and he has my vote for another one about Florida soon.
