Absolute classic military history

Ken Hechler, a military historian which covered the main events of this book in an almost contemporary way, wrote a tale about the dramatic coup d'main which won for the US Army an almost intact bridge on the Rhine.This book has seen a plethora of editions in the last 50 years, being almost continously in print from several publishers, which only offer superficial additions.
Besides, it has served as a basis for a superb war film -from the golden age of the great superproductions of the genre.
If you think that the above mentioned reasons are of no consequence, please bear this in mind: Mr Hechler was one of a distinguished troupe of US Army military historians, a troupe with names like S.L.A.Marshall,C.B McDonald, Robert Merriam and Hugh Cole... This list reads as practically a sort of "who's who" of military writers, writers which can claim fame for works as definitive as "Dark December", "A time for trumpets" or the superb official US Army history of the "Battle of the Bulge". Suffice to say that being in such a distinguished company, Mr Hechler book should be a remarkable work, and don't misunderstand me: it is, but it is also a book written in a agile, enthralling style, whose narrative flows in such a way that sometimes you must remember that you are reading an essay and not fiction, a feeling akin to the one you experience reading such superb classics (and in its age top bestsellers) like those of Cornelius Ryan.
Perhaps its main shortcoming is the uncomplete information about orders of battle of both enemies, and a certain paucity of detailed maps. In my humble opinion, i think both are deliberate in order to avoid ruptures on the rythm of a narration centered on the point of view of the dozens of characters whose travails were essential in order to take the target and exploit the success.
You must bear in mind the book is reasonably brief and certainly dated, which are features of minor importance, specially when we are talking about a classic work, which as such, surely merits a place on the bookshelf of any serious student of the final campaign in the North-Western European Theatre of Operations.

The best generation of men in our history is summed up in this book

The book started off a bit slow, trying to give all of the background information of all of the armies and persons involved leading up to the battle for the bridge at Remagen. Being two generations removed from WWII (my grandfather got drafted the day Japan surrendered), this information was a bit overwhelming for me but perhaps for a WWII history buff, all of the background information would be quite interesting. But as the battle drew near, it became more and more intense and exciting. The author did a great job of describing the personalities of the individuals involved and presenting the best facts he could find from both sides of the war concerning this battle. I for one, am always amazed at the heroism executed by our men and women of this generation. This book does a great job of capturing the heroic actions of our men as well as the heroic attempts (and shortcomings) of individuals on the German side. I highly recommend this book.

Great Piece of WWII History

If you like military history, this is a great story of the iconic storming of the Remagen Bridge, the allies' first opportunity to punch across the formidable barrier of the Rhine River in western Germany. The story is well told, weaving the lives, personalities, frailties and qualities of key players on both sides into the tale. The seizing of the Remagen Bridge is a story of luck--the fortunes of war--as much as initiative, daring and personal courage. If I had any complaint in reading this well-paced piece of military history, it would be that mundane details of names and places that did not figure importantly in the main story detracted a bit from the compelling drama of the central tale. Yet without those extra details, it would not be a disciplined work of true history.

Overall this was an excellent book of World War II military history and drama, well told and carefully documented. Definitely recommended for fans of the genre.

Not the first time I've read this book, but reread it a week after the author's death. An excellent history of a very critical event that no doubt shortened the duration of the war in western Europe in 1945. I've personally been past the remains of the Remagen bridge many times and it always gives me cold chills to think what occurred there. A must read for those looking for an in depth analysis of WW2 events.

The author served on the war and had the opportunity to meet with many of the major and minor figures involved with this battle while their memories were still fresh (and before some of the Germans were executed). This is practically a first hand account. The author keeps the story rolling at a fast pace. A well told tale of an important event that shortened the war.
